In the third quarter of 2024, U.S.-based e-commerce platform eBay had some 133 million active buyers worldwide, a slight increase over the previous quarter. Engaging buyers on all devices As of December 2023, Amazon was by far the most popular e-commerce and shopping website in the United States, driving over 45 percent of desktop traffic in this category. eBay, however, stood out as its main competitor, with nearly 10 percent of visits via this device. Among mobile users, eBay was also one of the most downloaded shopping apps in the North American country, with over nine million downloads recorded in 2023. Customer satisfaction over time In its more than two decades of operation, eBay has been able to maintain a consistently high level of customer satisfaction. From 2000 to 2023, the American Customer Service Index has recorded eBay's level of customer satisfaction. Out of a total of 100 points, eBay scored the lowest satisfaction rate in 2015, when it earned 75 index points. Meanwhile, the online marketplace reached its highest level in 2004, when it scored a total of 84 points.

Amazon's global platform 'amazon.com' was the most popular e-commerce and shopping website worldwide, accounting for more than 14 percent of desktop visits to sites in this category in December 2023. Second place went to ebay.com with roughly three percent.

Amazon leads the way There is no denying the dominance of Amazon in the e-commerce industry. By 2026, Amazon's worldwide net sales are estimated to exceed one trillion U.S. dollars. In 2022, amazon.com garnered over three billion monthly visitors, maintaining its spot as the most popular retail website worldwide. As of May 2022, the leading social media traffic referrers to amazon.com were YouTube (52 percent), Facebook (20 percent), and WhatsApp (18 percent).

Online shopping Amazon’s strong position is also due to shoppers’ preference for online marketplaces. As of April 2022, over one-third of online consumers opted for online marketplaces over all other digital channels. This category of platforms was also ranked as the e-commerce channel delivering the best customer experience in 2022. According to shoppers worldwide, the three most important changes that could make their digital shopping experience better were faster delivery (13 percent), free returns (eight percent), and more convenient shipping conditions (six percent).

Since a 35.63 billion U.S. dollar peak in 2018, eBay's e-retail sales have decreased annually. In 2019, eBay's retail e-commerce sales amounted to 33.33 billion U.S. dollars and are projected to continue to decline with a forecast of 31.66 billion U.S. dollars in 2020.

In 2021, eBay's marketplace net revenue was about 10.4 billion US dollars, most of which came from transaction revenues. While in 2020, eBay sold its StubHub operations to viagogo, in June 2021, it completed the transfer of its Classifieds business to Norwegian industry specialist Adevinta.
