Every year, a large amount of orchids is exported from the Netherlands to other countries. In the last decade, the Dutch export value of orchids far outnumbered the country's import value. In 2021, orchid export trade was valued at approximately 68.9 million euros. By comparison, the import value was worth just over four million euros. The total value of trees, plants and flowers exported from the Netherlands in 2021 was around 12 billion euros.
Exporting tulips
The Netherlands is well-known for producing flowers, but orchids are by no means the country’s most important flowery export product. The trade in tulips and tulip bulbs, for example, is much more important to the country. In 2021, the value of tulip bulb exports alone was estimated at over 250 million euros.
Decline in flower growing companies
Growing flowers was the responsibility of around 900 flower growing companies in the Netherlands. In the last decade, however, the number of flowers growing companies in the country decreased significantly. In 2007, there were nearly 2,100 flower producers. A decade later, less than half of these producers was left.
