TwitterThe National Library of Australia operates the Trove People and Organisations zone which allows users to access information about significant people and organisations (parties) as well as related biographical and contextual information. The Trove People and Organisations dataset is based on the Australian Name Authority File, a unique resource maintained since 1981 by Australian libraries which contribute their holdings to Libraries Australia. The Trove People and Organisations zone plays an important role in exposing records about parties and linking to them in libraries and other collecting institutions. The data also provides links to resources by and about a party and relationships between parties. To further enrich the service the Library is collaborating with organisations that already make available information about people and organisations in their specific domains and linking to them. The API to this dataset provides access to 885,000 identities.

Libraries and archives focus on collecting, preserving and providing public access to various forms of digital and physical media, including books, journals and newspapers. Since it serves the public, the Libraries and Archives industry primarily relies on government funding, offering most services free of charge. Financial contributions from federal, state and local governments heavily influence industry performance. The remainder of industry revenue comes from fees, late charges, private funding and donations. Industry revenue is expected to diminish at an annualised 1.5% over the five years through 2024-25, to $1.9 billion. Although funding from the Federal Government has grown nominally, it has not kept pace with inflation. In certain states and territories, funding has even declined. For instance, Victoria has stopped providing capital asset charge grants to libraries. Local government funding has also been inconsistent, as councils had to address health concerns during the pandemic. Libraries and archives also face growing competition from alternative entertainment options like computer games and storage solutions like online databases. Although libraries have embraced these technologies to attract consumers, competition remains a challenge. To diversify their revenue streams and enhance public appeal, libraries and archives have started offering supplementary services like lectures, gaming devices and reading groups. Revenue is set to dip by an estimated 1.3% in 2024-25. In the years ahead, libraries will modify their approach to material collection and presentation, including greater efforts in digitising physical collections. They will increasingly adapt to evolving consumer preferences by incorporating more electronic materials like ebooks into their offerings. These measures aim to keep archives and libraries relevant to the community for the long term. Despite these efforts, they will still face competition from online alternatives. Industry revenue is forecast to climb at an annualised 2.1% through 2029-30, to $2.1 billion.

James Cook was born in 1728 in Yorkshire. Apprenticed to a coal shipper in Whitby he began to learn the skills of sound navigation and accurate charting. In 1755 he joined the Royal Navy and steadily advanced. In North America he took part in the siege of Quebec City, and began coastal surveys of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. In 1768 Cook was promoted to become commander of Endeavour Bark sent to Tahiti to observe the transit of Venus. The Admiralty in asecret instructionsa asked Cook to find the mythical southern continent. In 1769 Cook circumnavigated New Zealand, charted its coast and took formal possession for England. On 19 April 1770 Cook sighted another coastline. Sailing north Cook landed at Botany Bay. And charted 5000 miles of coastline with great accuracy. Cook took formal possession of New South Wales for England. In 1772 Cook led a second expedition to confirm the great south land. In 1777, Cookas third voyage explored the Pacific coasts of North America and Siberia. Cook was killed on 14 February 1779 in the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii). This dataset contains transcripts of Cookas journal with corresponding links to the digitised pages. Where possible, location information has been extracted. For further information please see the aRead mea file within the dataset. Data has been sourced from South Seas and the Manuscripts collection of the National Library of Australia.

This data set relates to a survey of Australian public library service managers, conducted in August 2020 by researchers from Charles Sturt University. The survey sought to understand how public libraries in Australia were affected by and responded to the COVID-19 crisis.Three files are included: a PDF version of the survey, an XLSX file with all survey responses, and an XLSX file detailing the data coding. The data coding file also includes infromation about the distribution of the survey, and explains why free-text responses are not included in the published data set.

Bibliographic metadata for over 600 collection items identified in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages at State Library of Queensland.
State Library is committed to raise awareness and act to preserve and promote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages in Australia. To date, we have identified over 90 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages in more than 600 State Library collection items. These language materials are books, music, computer files, journals, visual works and archival collections.
The metadata in these records is the key to users discovering and accessing language materials inside and outside the library catalogue. In 2019, the metadata was enhanced with updated reference names and codes as part of the AUSTLANG national code-a-thon. The AUSTLANG database is managed by the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies and includes geographic, historical, classification and research information about each identified Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander language.

An historical database of libraries around Australia based on official sources for each state compiled in 2016 by Carl Higgs for analysis in the Creating Liveable Cities report [1], and updated in 2018 using then available data for use in the Australian National Liveability Study [2]. Where data were not publicly available, or recent (at that time), contact was made to request the data. The CSV file contains harmonised data including coordinates in WGS84 EPSG 4326 and features the following fields (only with values where applicable and present in the source data or other-wise derived such as coordinates via geocoding, or added for metadata documentation of data source): ID,Library,Address,Suburb,State,Postcode,Type,Holdings, latitude, longitude, year, geocode notes,Catchment,source_publisher,source_url,source_description,source_licence,source_retrieval_date.

The primary aim of the survey was to gain a 'snapshot' of what Australian libraries were doing with blogs and wikis. Methodology: An online survey. The population was Australian university, public and special libraries. The sampling frame was constructed from university library websites, State Library public library listings and the National Library of Australia's listing for special libraries. Branch libraries were treated as individual entries. Entries that were not relevant to the survey content, for example prison libraries, were removed from the sampling frame. To produce the correct sample sizes, every 10th library was sampled. The response rate was 21%. Once the data was weighted, the data was analysed using SPSS 13.0. Funding Body: Ray Choate Scholarship, Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA).
