    Food Statistics Pocketbook Summary

    The Food Statistics Pocketbook presents a selection of information covering the economic, social and environmental aspects of the food we eat. It contains statistics for different time periods, but always using latest available data at the time of release. Data comes from surveys run by Defra and the Office for National Statistics and from a wide range of other sources including government departments, agencies and commercial organisations.

    Description

    On 1 April 2025 responsibility for fire and rescue transferred from the Home Office to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.

    This information covers fires, false alarms and other incidents attended by fire crews, and the statistics include the numbers of incidents, fires, fatalities and casualties as well as information on response times to fires. The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) also collect information on the workforce, fire prevention work, health and safety and firefighter pensions. All data tables on fire statistics are below.

    MHCLG has responsibility for fire services in England. The vast majority of data tables produced by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government are for England but some (0101, 0103, 0201, 0501, 1401) tables are for Great Britain split by nation. In the past the Department for Communities and Local Government (who previously had responsibility for fire services in England) produced data tables for Great Britain and at times the UK.     Our statistical practice is regulated by the Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR). OSR sets the standards of trustworthiness, quality and value in the Code of Practice for Statistics that all producers of official statistics should adhere to.     These statistics on transport use are published monthly.

    For each day, the Department for Transport (DfT) produces statistics on domestic transport:

    • road traffic in Great Britain
    • rail passenger journeys in Great Britain
    • Transport for London (TfL) tube and bus routes
    • bus travel in Great Britain (excluding London)

    The associated methodology notes set out information on the data sources and methodology used to generate these headline measures.

    From September 2023, these statistics include a second rail usage time series which excludes Elizabeth Line service (and other relevant services that have been replaced by the Elizabeth line) from both the travel week and its equivalent baseline week in 2019. This allows for a more meaningful like-for-like comparison of rail demand across the period because the effects of the Elizabeth Line on rail demand are removed. More information can be found in the methodology document.

    Description

    This publication summarises the concentrations of major air pollutants as measured by the Automatic Urban and Rural Network (AURN). This release covers annual average concentrations in the UK of:

    • nitrogen dioxide (NO2)
    • particulates (PM2.5)
    • particulates (PM10)
    • ozone (O3)

    The release also covers the number of days when air pollution was ‘Moderate’ or higher for any one of five pollutants listed below:

    • nitrogen dioxide (NO2)
    • particulates (PM2.5)
    • particulates (PM10)
    • ozone (O3)
    • sulphur dioxide (SO2)

    These statistics are used to monitor progress against the UK’s reduction targets for concentrations of air pollutants. Improvements in air quality help reduce harm to human health and the environment.

    Air quality in the UK is strongly linked to anthropogenic emissions of pollutants. For more information on UK emissions data and other information please refer to the air quality and emissions statistics GOV.UK page.

    The statistics in this publication are based on data from the Automatic Urban and Rural Network (AURN) of air quality monitors. The https://uk-air.defra.gov.uk/" class="govuk-link">UK-AIR website contains the latest air quality monitoring data for the UK and detailed information about the different monintoring networks that measure air quality. The website also hosts the latest data produced using Pollution Climate Mapping (PCM) which is a suite of models that uses both monitoring and emissions data to model concentrations of air pollutants across the whole of the UK. The UK-AIR website also provides air pollution episode updates and information on Local Authority Air Quality Management Areas as well as a number of useful reports.

    The monitoring data is continuously reviewed and subject to change when issues are highlighted. This means that the time series for certain statistics may vary slightly from year to year. You can access editions of this publication via The National Archives or the links below.

    Description

    Modern slavery is a term that includes any form of human trafficking, slavery, servitude or forced labour, as set out in the Modern Slavery Act 2015. Potential victims of modern slavery in the UK that come to the attention of authorised ‘First Responder’ organisations are referred to the National Referral Mechanism (NRM).

    Adults (aged 18 or above) must consent to being referred to the NRM, whilst children under the age of 18 need not consent to being referred. As specified in section 52 of the Modern Slavery Act 2015, public authorities in England and Wales have a statutory duty to notify the Home Office when they come across potential victims of modern slavery ('Duty to Notify' (DtN)). This duty is discharged by either referring a child or consenting adult potential victim into the NRM, or by notifying the Home Office via the DtN process if an adult victim does not consent to enter the NRM.

    The Home Office publishes quarterly statistical bulletins and aggregated data breakdowns on the "https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/national-referral-mechanism-statistics" target="_blank"> National Referral Mechanism webpage on the GOV.UK website regarding the number of potential victims referred each quarter. To allow stakeholders and first responders more flexibility in analysing this data for their own strategic and operational planning, the disaggregated, pseudonymised dataset used to create the aggregated published data is also available from the UK Data Service as 'safeguarded' data. (The UKDS data are available in SPSS, Stata, tab-delimited text and CSV formats.)

    Latest edition information

    For the 16th edition (May 2025), the data file was amended to include Quarter 1 2025 cases, and the Data Notes documentation file was also updated. Additional variables covering reconsideration requests have been added to the data. Further information on these can be found in the documentation and on the GOV.UK National Referral Mechanism webpage.

    Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) was established in 1959 under Statistics Act, 2015 BS as the central agency for the collection, consolidation, processing, analysis, publication and dissemination of statistics. It is under the National Planning Commission Secretariat (NPCS) of Nepal and serves as a national statistical organization of Government of Nepal. It generates timely and reliable socio-economic statistics mainly through the operation of censuses and surveys. The main objective of setting up CBS is to avail data to NPCS and other Government agencies for the formulation of national plans, policies and also produces national account estimates to measure the economic growth of the country. It carries out different household surveys and censuses regularly to assess the socio- economic condition of the country. The major tasks, which CBS has been performing, are decennial population census, agriculture census and quinquennial manufacturing establishment census. In addition, many household surveys like living standard surveys, labor force surveys and multiple indicator surveillance are indispensable tasks, which CBS has been accomplishing. The role of the CBS is always decisive for the effective functioning of the national statistical system as a whole. It promotes collaborative research efforts among members of academic community, data producers and users. It has a prominent role in developing statistical system and maintaining statistical standard in the country. Statistics Act, 2079 came into effect on August, 2022. As the provision of the act, CBS has upgraded to the National Statistics Office (NSO). The National Statistics Office (NSO) is the central statistical organization of the country responsible for the production and dissemination of official statistics.     Description

    This dataset contains data from the National Center for Education Statistics' Academic Library Survey, which was gathered every two years from 1996 - 2014, and annually in IPEDS starting in 2014 (this dataset has continued to only merge data every two years, following the original schedule). This data was merged, transformed, and used for research by Starr Hoffman and Samantha Godbey.This data was merged using R; R scripts for this merge can be made available upon request. Some variables changed names or definitions during this time; a view of these variables over time is provided in the related Figshare Project. Carnegie Classification changed several times during this period; all Carnegie classifications were crosswalked to the 2000 classification version; that information is also provided in the related Figshare Project. This data was used for research published in several articles, conference papers, and posters starting in 2018 (some of this research used an older version of the dataset which was deposited in the University of Nevada, Las Vegas's repository).SourcesAll data sources were downloaded from the National Center for Education Statistics website https://nces.ed.gov/.
