Based on annual estimates from the census, the metropolitan area had around 19.5 million inhabitants, which was a slight decrease from the previous year. The Los Angeles and Chicago metro areas rounded out the top three. What is a metropolitan statistical area? In general, a metropolitan statistical area (MSA) is a core urbanized area with a population of at least 50,000 inhabitants – the smallest MSA is Carson City, with an estimated population of nearly 56,000. The urban area is made bigger by adjacent communities that are socially and economically linked to the center. MSAs are particularly helpful in tracking demographic change over time in large communities and allow officials to see where the largest pockets of inhabitants are in the country. How many MSAs are in the United States? There were 421 metropolitan statistical areas across the U.S. as of July 2021. The largest city in each MSA is designated the principal city and will be the first name in the title. An additional two cities can be added to the title, and these will be listed in population order based on the most recent census. So, in the example of New York-Newark-Jersey City, New York has the highest population, while Jersey City has the lowest. The U.S. Census Bureau conducts an official population count every ten years, and the new count is expected to be announced by the end of 2030.

Data was pulled from a table in the following Wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_cities_by_population I used Microsoft Excel's PowerQuery function to pull the table from Wikipedia. Lists each city, its rank (based on 2020 population), some data on its area, and population in both 2020 and 2010.

Living wages are based in US Dollars per hour, assuming 2080 hours worked per year.

In addition, living wage data from http://livingwage.mit.edu I left out the minimum wage from this dataset because it appears the data is somewhat inconsistent, and often falls back on the state minimum where localities can have a higher min wage. I also omitted the poverty wage data because for the most part it seemed to be the same for most areas. One last thing to keep in mind is some cities are grouped up into metropolitan statistical areas, and as a result you will see cities that are near each other have identical data.

Los Angeles had almost *** times more Bitcoin ATMs than Baltimore in May 2025, with nearly *** cryptocurrency installations found in the latter city. In general, Bitcoin ATMs were not necessarily found in the bigger cities of the United States: Philadelphia, for instance, counted fewer machines than Detroit or Orlando. These ATMs are different from traditional cash machines in that they do not connect to a bank account but connect users to a Bitcoin wallet or exchange. This way, they can convert physical money into digital currency. The United States housed the highest amount of these machines worldwide.

This dataset is associated with the McDonald et al. paper, entitled "The urban tree cover and temperature disparity in US urbanized areas: Quantifying the effect of income across 5,723 communities". Urban tree cover provides benefits to human health and well-being, but previous studies suggest that tree cover is often inequitably distributed. Here, we use NAIP imagery to survey the tree cover inequality for Census blocks in US large urbanized areas, home to 167 million people across 5,723 municipalities and other places. We compared tree cover to summer surface temperature, as measured using Thematic Mapper imagery. In 92% of the urbanized areas surveyed, low-income blocks have less tree cover than high-income blocks. On average, low-income blocks have 15.2% less tree cover and are 1.5⁰C hotter (surface temperature) than high-income blocks. The greatest difference between low- and high-income blocks was found in urbanized areas in the Northeast of the United States, where low-income blocks often have at least 30% less tree cover and are at least 4.0⁰C hotter. Even after controlling for population density and built-up intensity, the association between income and tree cover is significant, as is the association between race and tree cover. We estimate, after controlling for population density, that low-income blocks have 62 million fewer trees than high-income blocks, a compensatory value of $56 billion dollars ($1,349/person). An investment in tree planting and natural regeneration of $17.6 billion would close the tree cover disparity for 42 million people in low-income blocks.

This extraction of data from the 1990 decennial Census files (CENSUS OF POPULATION AND HOUSING, 1990 UNITED STATES: SUMMARY TAPE FILES 3A AND 3B (ICPSR 9694, 9693)) was designed to provide a set of contextual variables to be matched to any survey dataset that has been coded for the geographic location of respondents. Over 120 variables were selected from original Census sources, and more than 100 variables were derived from those component variables. The variables characterize geographic areas in terms of ethnicity, family structures, income, education, labor force activity, and housing. The geographic areas chosen range from neighborhoods (tracts, Block Numbering Areas (BNAs), and Enumeration Districts (EDs)), through intermediate levels of geography (Minor Civil Divisions and Census County Divisions (MCDs/CCDs), census places, and ZIP codes), through large economic areas (counties, Metropolitan Statistical Areas, State Economic Areas (SEAs), and specially created Labor Market Areas (LMAs)), and beyond to large regions (Economic Sub-Regions (ESRs) and states). To the maximum extent possible, the investigator selected Census variables that seemed relevant to problems associated with poverty and income determination and that were present in comparable form in the 1970 and 1980 Census datasets.
