    Description

Dollar General has had explosive growth over the depicted period, more than doubling their store count from 8,194 in 2007 to 20,662 in 2024. In fact, Dollar General was the leading retailer with the most store locations in the United States in 2023. In the last year available, Dollar General's sales exceeded 40.6 billion U.S. dollars. Dollar General started as a family-owned business called J.L. Turner in 1939. In 1968, the company changed its name to Dollar General and was listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Dollar store controversy Following the 2008 recession, Dollar General expanded rapidly, primarily in economically depressed areas. The company, along with other major dollar store chains, claimed to fill a niche in these communities where the closest grocery store might either be too far or have prices too high for customers. Critics say dollar stores are driving out full-service grocery stores and local businesses, exacerbating economic decline and offering a narrow selection of food with lower nutritional value. Groceries lead sales Looking at the merchandise sales of Dollar General, it is indeed the consumables category that is the company’s biggest earner, by a huge margin. The growth in its sales' share outpace the rest of the company’s offerings as well. In 2009, consumables accounted for 70 percent of sales, and by 2024 that share had risen to over 82 percent.

    Description

Dollarama, the value retailer headquartered in Montreal, had annual sales amounting to around 5.87 billion Canadian dollars in Canada during the fiscal year ending in January 2024. This represents more than a two-fold increase since 2015. Dollarama origins In 1992, the first Dollarama store was opened in Quebec by Larry Rossy. The concept was simple: all items were on sale for one dollar or less. The retail chain expanded throughout Canada in the coming years, and there were 1,551 Dollarama stores in Canada as of January 2024. Ontario was the province with the highest number of stores, at 612, and Prince Edward Island had just five. Along with an expansion in their number of stores, Dollarama’s in-store offerings have also diversified, with the introduction of new price points above one dollar throughout the years. The competitive landscape Dollarama reigns above all other discount or value retail chains in Canada when it comes to number of locations. As of 2021, Walmart superstores and Winners came in distant second and third places with 334 and 269 stores nationwide respectively. One of Dollarama's main competitors is Dollar Tree, which operates in the U.S. and Canada. Across both of these regions Dollar Tree had over 16,000 stores as of January 2023.
