This coverage contains estimates of agricultural expenses in counties in the conterminous United States as reported in the 1987 Census of Agriculture (U.S. Department of Commerce, 1989a). Agricultural expenses data are reported in thousands of dollars. Agricultural expenses estimates were generated from surveys of all farms where $1,000 or more of agricultural products were sold, or normally would have been sold, during the census year. Most of the attributes summarized represent 1987 data, but some information from the 1982 Census of Agriculture also was included. The polygons representing county boundaries in the conterminous United States, as well as lakes, estuaries, and other nonland-area features were derived from the Digital Line Graph (DLG) files representing the 1:2,000,000-scale map in the National Atlas of the United States (1970). The economic census is the major source of facts about the structure and functioning of the Nation's economy. This disc includes statistical information tabulated by ZIP Code from the 1987 and 1982 Economic Censuses and the 1987 Census of Agriculture, including: Retail trade 1987 and 1982 Service industries 1987 Manufactures 1987 Agriculture 1987. Most of the ZIP Code statistics are frequency counts of establishments or farms in particular size classes. The census of manufactures provides cou nts of establishments by industry by employment-size class. The censuses of retail trade and service industries provide establishment counts by sales-size as well as employment-size for detailed kinds of business. Retail, service, and manufacturing establishments with no paid employees are not covered in these tabulations. The census of agriculture reports counts of farms classified by size in several ways: land area, market value of products sold, cattle inventory, hogs inventory, and cropland of three types. In addition, other files include the aggregate sales or receipts, payroll, and employment in establishments engaged in retail trade or service industries. The ZIP Code statistics from the economic censuses are available on CD-ROM and computer tape only. The ZIP Code data from the census of agriculture correspond to the contents of the subject report ZIP Code Tabulations of Selected Items, series AC87-S-6. Retail, service and agriculture data are presented in separate files state-by-state. The manufactures data are in a nationwide summary file.

The economic censuses are the major source of facts about the structure and functioning of the Nation's economy. They provide essential information for government, business, industry, and the general public. Economic censuses furnish an important part of the framework for such composite measures as the gross national product, input-output measures, production and price indexes, and other statistical series that measure short-term changes in economic conditions. Policy-making agencies of the F ederal Government use the data, especially in monitoring economic activity and providing assistance to business. State and local Governments use the data to assess business activities and tax bases within their jurisdictions and to develop programs to attract business. Trade associations study trends in their own and competing industries, and keep their members informed of market changes. Individual businesses use the data to locate potential markets and to analyze their own production and sales performance relative to industry or area averages. Title 13 of the United States Code (sections 131, 191, and 224) directs the Census Bureau to take the economic censuses every 5 years, covering years ending in 2 and 7. The 1987 Economic Censuses consist of the: Census of Retail Trade, Census of Wholesale Trade, Census of Service Industries Census of Transportation, Census of Manufactures, Census of Mineral Industries, and the Census of Construction Industries. Special programs also cover enterprise statistics and minority-owned and women-owned businesses. The 1987 Census of Agriculture and 1987 Census of Governments are conducted separately. The next economic censuses are scheduled to be taken in 1993 covering the year 1992. This file identifies geographic areas and industrial or business categories by codes, including codes for the United States, regions, divisions, States, Standard Consolidated Areas, Standard Metropolitan Areas, counties, and places
The 1992 Census of Agriculture presents statistics for States and the United States. The census has taken a census every fifth year after 1983 covering the prior year. This adjustment in timing established the agriculture census on a 5-year cycle collecting data for years ending in 2 and 7. In keeping with the provisions of Title 13, United States Code, no data are published that would disclose the operations of an individual farm. However, the number of farms in a given size category or othe r classification, such as size of farm, is not considered a release of confidential information and is provided even though other information is withheld. The census of agriculture is the leading source of statistics about the Nation's agricultural production and the only source of consistent, comparable data at the county, State, and national levels. Census statistics are used by Congress in developing and changing farm programs and for determining the effects of these programs. Many national and State programs are designed or allocated on the basis of census data, such as funds for extension services, research, and soil conservation projects. The current CD contains Farms by ZIP code (1992) Census and Farms by ZIP code ( (1987) census.

This coverage contains estimates of herbicide use for the sixty-first through the eightieth most-used herbicides in the conterminous United States as reported in Gianessi and Puffer (1991). Herbicide-use estimates in this coverage are reported for each county polygon as acres treated, pounds of active ingredient used, and pounds used per square mile. The herbicide-use estimates provided by Gianessi and Puffer (1991) list acres treated and pounds of active ingredient applied for a given crop in each county for which use has been estimated. Cropping data are from the 1987 Census of Agriculture, and are subject to occasional suppressions of acreage estimates at the county level due to problems of confidentiality and census disclosure rules. The herbicide-use estimates included in this coverage are totals of use on all crops treated in a given county. This dataset consists of a series of rasters covering the conterminous United States. Each raster is a one kilometer (km) grid for 18 selected Census of Agriculture statistics mapped to land use pixels for the time period 1950 to 2012. A supplemental set of 9 statistics mapped at the entire county level are also provided as 1-km rasters. The rasters are posted as ArcGIS grids. The statistics represent values for crops, livestock, irrigation, fertilizer, and manure usage. Most statistics are mapped for all 14 Census of Agriculture reporting years in that time frame: 1950, 1954, 1959, 1964, 1969, 1974, 1978, 1982, 1987, 1992, 1997, 2002, 2007, and 2012.
