    Description

The UK censuses took place on 29th April 2001. They were run by the Northern Ireland Statistics & Research Agency (NISRA), General Register Office for Scotland (GROS), and the Office for National Statistics (ONS) for both England and Wales. The UK comprises the countries of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Statistics from the UK censuses help paint a picture of the nation and how we live. They provide a detailed snapshot of the population and its characteristics, and underpin funding allocation to provide public services.

The aggregate statistics produced as outputs from UK censuses provide information on a wide range of demographic and socio-economic characteristics of the population of the United Kingdom. They are predominantly a collection of aggregated, or summary counts of the numbers of people, families or households resident in specific geographical areas or ‘zones’ possessing particular characteristics, or combinations of characteristics drawn from the themes of population, people and places, families, ethnicity and religion, health, work, and housing.

Aggregate statistics are available for the full range of geographies employed within the census, from the smallest (output areas with an average of 150 persons in England and Wales), to national level. For further information about the geographies used in the output of census aggregate statistics, see the section on census geography in the Office for National Statistics’ Beginner’s Guide to UK Geography.

Where there was no applicable tick box, people were asked to write in the present name of their country of birth. The written responses were coded using the ONS Geography Classification of Countries. Countries are classified geographically not politically. For example, the Canary Islands are classified as North Africa rather than Western Europe even though they belong to Spain.

    Description

The census is Canada's largest and most comprehensive data source conducted by Statistics Canada every five years. The Census of Population collects demographics and linguistic information on every man, woman and child living in Canada. The data shown here is provided by Statistics Canada from the 2001 Census as a custom profile data order for the City of Vancouver, using the City's 22 local planning areas. The data may be reproduced provided they are credited to Statistics Canada, Census 2001, custom order for City of Vancouver Local Areas.Data AccessThis dataset has not yet been converted to a format compatible with our new platform. Please use the links below to access the files from our legacy site. Census local area profiles 2001 (CSV) Census local area profiles 2001 (XLS) Dataset schema (Attributes) Please see the Census local area profiles 2001 attributes page. NoteThe 22 Local Areas is defined by the Census blocks and is equal to the City's 22 local planning areas and includes the Musqueam 2 reserve.Vancouver CSD (Census Subdivision) is defined by the City of Vancouver municipal boundary which excludes the Musqueam 2 reserve but includes Stanley Park.Vancouver CMA (Census Metropolitan Area) is defined by the Metro Vancouver boundary which includes the following Census Subdivisions: Vancouver, Surrey, Burnaby, Richmond, Coquitlam, District of Langley, Delta, District of North Vancouver, Maple Ridge, New Westminster, Port Coquitlam, City of North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Port Moody, City of Langley, White Rock, Pitt Meadows, Greater Vancouver A, Bowen Island, Capilano 5, Anmore, Musqueam 2, Burrard Inlet 3, Lions Bay, Tsawwassen, Belcarra, Mission 1, Matsqui 4, Katzie 1, Semiahmoo, Seymour Creek 2, McMillian Island 6, Coquitlam 1, Musqueam 4, Coquitlam 2, Katzie 2, Whonnock 1, Barnston Island 3, and Langley 5. Data products that are identified as 20% sample data refer to information that was collected using the long census questionnaire. For the most part, these data were collected from 20% of the households; however they also include some areas, such as First Nations communities and remote areas, where long census form data were collected from 100% of the households. The following changes were made to the census family concept for 2001 and account for some of the increase in the total number of families, single parent families and children living at home: Two persons living in a same-sex common law relationship are now considered a family. Children living at home now include previously married children, provided they are not currently living with a spouse or common-law partner. A grandchild living in a three generation household where the parent (middle generation) was never married is now considered a child of the census family. A grandchild of a three-generation household where the middle generation is not present is now considered a child of the census family.Mode of transportation to work data is not reliable for the 2001 Census due to the TransLink Transit Strike that occurred during the data collection period. Data currencyThe data for Census 2001 was collected in May 2001. Data accuracyStatistics Canada is committed to protect the privacy of all Canadians and the confidentiality of the data they provide to us. As part of this commitment, some population counts of geographic areas are adjusted in order to ensure confidentiality. Counts of the total population are rounded to a base of 5 for any dissemination block having a population less than 15. Population counts for all standard geographic areas above the dissemination block level are derived by summing the adjusted dissemination block counts. The adjustment of dissemination block counts is controlled to ensure that the population counts for dissemination areas will always be within 5 of the actual values. The adjustment has no impact on the population counts of census divisions and large census subdivisions. Description

This 2001 Population Census dataset contains statistics relevant to demographic, household, educational, economic, housing and internal migration characteristics of the Hong Kong population residing in the 18 District Council districts in 2001. The dataset also contains the boundaries of individual District Council districts. Since 1961, a population census has been conducted in Hong Kong every 10 years and a by-census in the middle of the intercensal period. The 2001 Population Census, which was conducted in March 2001, provides benchmark statistics on the socio-economic characteristics of the Hong Kong population vital to the planning and policy formulation of the government. This dataset will be incorporated into Population Distribution Framework Spatial Data Theme.

    Description

IPUMS-International is an effort to inventory, preserve, harmonize, and disseminate census microdata from around the world. The project has collected the world's largest archive of publicly available census samples. The data are coded and documented consistently across countries and over time to facillitate comparative research. IPUMS-International makes these data available to qualified researchers free of charge through a web dissemination system. The IPUMS project is a collaboration of the Minnesota Population Center, National Statistical Offices, and international data archives. Major funding is provided by the U.S. National Science Foundation and the Demographic and Behavioral Sciences Branch of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. Additional support is provided by the University of Minnesota Office of the Vice President for Research, the Minnesota Population Center, and Sun Microsystems.

    Description

This dataset shows the 2001 Census Output Areas (OAs). OAs are the smallest geographical unit for which Census data is released, and as a result, they act as the basic “building-blocks” for the creation of other “higher” geographies, eg Datazones, council areas. The OAs are constructed by aggregating together a small number of postcodes. Because the OAs cover small areas and contain relatively small numbers of households and population (households in the range 20 to 77; population >/= 50), there is only a limited amount of Census data that can be released without infringing confidentiality. Each OA is assigned to an area in a ‘higher’ geography by first selecting one of the postcodes in the OA as a ‘master’ postcode. The OA inherits all the characteristics of the master postcode including its assignment to higher areas and its centroid grid reference. The master postcode is the postcode with the grid reference closest to the centre of the OA weighted by census household. There are 42,604 Census 2001 OAs in Scotland.

    Description

These deprivation scores are based on those created by Townsend, Morris, Carstairs, Jarman and the Department of the Environment (DoE).

Calculating measures of deprivation is perhaps one of the commonest uses of census data. Data on, for example, housing, employment, social class and availability of cars are used to create a single measure of area deprivation. There are various measures of deprivation that use different census variables or give different weights to the same variables.

In addition, the Deprivation data webpage at UK Data Service Census Support provides more information and links to related measures available elsewhere.

These data are restricted to staff and students from UK further/higher education institutions. If your intended use of the data involves partnership with or funding from any non-academic organisations or individuals, or if you are uncertain about whether your use of the data is entirely academic, please Get in touch.
