This data set provides statistics about employer and nonemployer businesses from 2020 for the nation, states, and metropolitan statistical areas (MSA). It includes the number of firms, revenue, number of employees, and annual payroll, broken down by industry and owner demographics including as sex, ethnicity, race, and veteran status.About NES-DThe Nonemployer Statistics by Demographics series (NES-D) provides information on the demographic characteristics of nonemployer businesses. The NES-D is the result of a research project by the Census Bureau to complete the picture of U.S. business ownership by demographics for the United States. Historically, the quinquennial Survey of Business Owners (SBO) provided the only comprehensive source of information on both employer and nonemployer businesses by demographic characteristics of the business owners. In 2017, the SBO was replaced by the Annual Business Survey (ABS). The ABS is an annual survey that collects demographic characteristics from employer businesses. However, the ABS excludes the collection of demographic data from nonemployer businesses. The NES-D was developed to produce similar estimates as ABS on owner demographics for nonemployer businesses. The NES-D is not a survey; rather, it leverages existing individual-level administrative records to assign demographic characteristics to the universe of nonemployer businesses. Demographic characteristics including sex, ethnicity, race, veteran status, owner age, place of birth, and U.S. citizenship are assigned to nonemployer business owners.Together, the NES-D and the ABS will continue to provide the only source of detailed and comprehensive statistics on the scope, nature and activities of all U.S. businesses by the demographic characteristics of the business owners. The Annual Respondents Database X (ARDx) has been created to allow users of Annual Respondents Database (ARD) (held at the UK Data Archive under SN 6644) to continue analysis even though the Annual Business Inquiry (ABI) which was used to create ARD ceased in 2008. ARDx contains harmonised variables from 1997 to 2020.

ARDx is created from two ONS surveys, the Annual Business Inquiry (ABI; 1998-2008, held at the UK Data Archive under SN 6644) and the Annual Business Survey (ABS; 2009 onwards, held at the UK Data Archive under SN 7451). The ABI has an employment survey (ABI1) and a second survey for financial information (ABI2). ABS only collects financial data, and so is supplemented with employment data from the Business Register and Employment Survey (BRES; 2009 onwards, held at the UK Data Archive under SN 7463).

ARDx consists of six types of files: 'respondent files' which have reported and derived information from survey questionnaire responses; and 'universe files' which contain limited information on all business that are within scope of the ABI/ABS. These files are provided at both the Reporting Unit and Local Unit levels. There are also 'register panel' and "capital stock" files.

Linking to other business studies
These data contain Inter-Departmental Business Register (IDBR) reference numbers. These are anonymous but unique reference numbers assigned to business organisations. Their inclusion allows researchers to combine different business survey sources together. Researchers may consider applying for other business data to assist their research.

For the fifth edition (December 2023), ARDx Version 4.0 for 1997-2020 has been provided, replacing Version 3. Coverage has thus been expanded to include 1997 and 2015-2020.

Scottish Annual Business Survey 2020 - filtered for Renfrewshire.Scottish Annual Business Statistics (SABS), which is largely sourced to the Annual Business Survey, provides data mainly on the Production (including Manufacturing), Construction and Service Sectors in Scotland. The main sectors not covered are the financial sector & parts of agriculture and the public sector. Data are classified according to industry group and geographical area. All figures are at current prices.Variables include employment, employees, turnover, purchases of goods & services, approximate gross value added (GVA), gross wages & salaries, labour costs, total output and number of business units. GVA per head, gross wages & salaries per head and labour costs per head are also available.

The Leeds City Council Annual Travel to Work Survey 2020 ran between 15th October and 15th November 2020. The survey was moved from its traditional spring timeframe as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and related lockdowns. As with previous years the survey ran via iTrace utilising the established database of businesses, organisations and schools. To reflect the substantial changes the pandemic has had on businesses across the city, the survey included questions to gauge how mode of travel has changed from Pre-Covid times to current arrangements. The survey also included a series of questions related to car parking. The survey received 8738 responses, made up of 4653 business responses, 2935 Leeds City Council employees and 1411 from schools. The number of responses is substantially lower than previous years. A number of businesses remain closed, and although the survey was launched when a tiered system was in place, a national lockdown was announced on 31st October with all non-essential activities curtailed.

The Management and Expectations Survey (MES) is a voluntary survey of British firms launched in 2017 to gather information on the use of structured management practices for the reporting period of 2016. The MES sample was a subset of the sample for the Annual Business Survey (ABS) (UK Data Archive SN 7451) for the 2016 reporting period, to allow the datasets to be linked. Researchers must still access the ABS as normal through the users’ chosen data access platform. This survey builds upon a previous ONS pilot survey examining management practices, the Management Practices Survey (MPS) (UK Data Archive SN 8182). Compared to the MPS, the MES has wider industry scope, including non‐manufacturing production and services industries; a larger sample size; an increase in the number of questions on management practices from 8 to 12; questions concerning managers and non‐managers separately.

The survey is designed to produce data that can be compared with a subset of the data collected in: the MPS, the US Census Bureau’s Management and Organizational Practices Survey (USMOPS) and the German Management and Organizational Practices Survey (GMOPS). The MES is more closely aligned (with regards to management practice questions) to the USMOPS and GMOPS than the MPS.
