Statistics Canada Census Data from 2021. This dataset includes the indigenous population data provided by Statistics Canada joined with the census tracts. Each topic covered by the census was exported as a separate table. Each table contains the total, male, and female characteristics as fields for each census tract. Topics range from population, age and sex, immigration, language, family and households, income, education, and labour. At the 2021 Australian census, 278,043 people in New South Wales were Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. New South Wales is Australia’s most populated state, also housing Australia’s largest city, Sydney. By comparison, Australia’s second largest state, Victoria, was home to around 66 thousand Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples

There are around 800,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia, which represents just over three percent of the Australian population. Indigenous people are often referred to as Australia's first people or the traditional custodians of the land in recognition of their ancestors inhabiting Australia more than 60,000 years ago. Australia's Indigenous peoples are represented by two distinct groups. Aboriginal people come from the Australian mainland. Torres Strait Islander people inhabit the group of Islands between the northern tip of Queensland and Papua New Guinea and represent less than 40,000 people.

Closing the gap

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples experience significantly poorer health and wellbeing outcomes when compared to their non-Indigenous Australian counterparts. The average life expectancy of Indigenous Australians is around eight years shorter than that of the non-Indigenous population. In education, Indigenous Australians are also underrepresented, but attendance rates are improving and in 2019, full-time Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students numbered well over 200,000 people.

Due to the complexity of the data, changes were made to the field names in order to accommodate the limitations of the database. This makes some uses harder as it requires careful use of the field names and totals to provide accurate values and analysis.

This dataset presents information from G07 – Indigenous status by age by sex in Australia based on the general community profile from the 2021 Census. It contains characteristics of persons, families, and dwellings by Local Government Areas (LGA), 2021, from the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) Edition 3.

This dataset is part of a set of web services based on the 2021 Census. It can be used as a tool for researching, planning, and analysis. The data is based on place of usual residence (that is, where people usually live, rather than where they were counted on Census night), unless otherwise stated.

Small random adjustments have been made to all cell values to protect the confidentiality of respondents. These adjustments may cause the sum of rows or columns to differ by small amounts from table totals. Among selected Latin American countries in 2021, Guatemala had the highest share of population that identify themselves as indigenous with over 43.5 percent. Bolivia followed with 41 percent of the total inhabitants. Colombia and Ecuador ranked as the Latin American countries with the highest share of indigenous people living in poverty.

Indigenous Areas (IARE) are medium sized geography units designed to facilitate the release of more detailed statistics for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

IAREs are made from Indigenous Locations (ILOCs).

Using IAREs with Census data

Use IAREs to balance the need for specific location data and more detailed information about the characteristics of that data. If you require information about a specific area, use ILOCs. If greater availability of data is more important, use larger Indigenous Regions (IREGs).

Indigenous identity by gender and age for the population in private households which includes counts, percentage distribution and percentage change from the 2011 National Household Survey, and the 2016 and 2021 censuses.

In 2021, the fertility rate of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women between the ages of 25 to 29 in Australia was 134.5 births per 1,000 women. By comparison, the most fertile age group for all Australian women was 30 to 34 years old at 120.6 births per 1,000 women.

The Individuals File, 2021 Census Public Use Microdata Files (PUMF) provides data on the characteristics of the Canadian population. The file contains a 2.7% sample of anonymous responses to the 2021 Census questionnaire. The files have been carefully scrutinized to ensure the complete confidentiality of the individual responses and geographic identifiers have been restricted to provinces/territories and metropolitan areas. With 144 variables, this comprehensive tool is excellent for policy analysts, pollsters, social researchers and anyone interested in modelling and performing statistical regression analysis using the Census.
