    Description

In response to the growing concern in geographic information science, which pertains to utilizing contemporary internet technology to communicate past information or knowledge for establishing foundations in geography. Recent studies have investigated geomatics solutions for historical city, and enhancing GIS skills through collaborative approach. In this study, we build upon prior research by exploring how the implementation of current technology can promote a cooperative learning environment, particularly within the realm of forestry education. Minetest, the 3D voxel game engine has high capability of modification, for visualizing natural environments and urban structures. The goal of this study was to investigate the potential of using the game engine for forestry education purposes. To meet this objective, we developed precise and detailed models of building structures and their surrounding environment. We also explored the visualization beyond 3D geospatial data, by generating analytical results of solar radiation on building roofs using GIS software. The visualization process was facilitated by the use of 3D light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data, provided by the UBC Campus + Community Planning department. The proposed approach proved to be effective in producing compatible geospatial data for visualization in the game engine. We also conducted exploratory statistical analysis to examine the relationship between building energy usage and solar radiation. The exploratory regression result of the solar radiation analysis has an R2adj of 0.19, which indicates its insignificant impact on building energy usage. Finally, the findings of this research provide a foundation for future studies that can continue to explore the potential of using 3D game engines. Keywords: 3D Geo-Visualization, Forestry Education, Remote Sensing, Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), Building Energy Usage, Solar Radiation Analysis

    Description

Recent advances in Computer Science and the spread of internet connection have allowed specialists to virtualize complex environments on the web and offer further information with realistic exploration experiences. At the same time, the fruition of complex geospatial datasets (point clouds, Building Information Modelling (BIM) models, 2D and 3D models) on the web is still a challenge, because usually it involves the usage of different proprietary software solutions, and the input data need further simplification for computational effort reduction. Moreover, integrating geospatial datasets acquired in different ways with various sensors remains a challenge. An interesting question, in that respect, is how to integrate 3D information in a 3D GIS (Geographic Information System) environment and manage different scales of information in the same application. Integrating a multiscale level of information is currently the first step when it comes to digital twinning. It is needed to properly manage complex urban datasets in digital twins related to the management of the buildings (cadastral management, prevention of natural and anthropogenic hazards, structure monitoring, etc.). Therefore, the current research shows the development of a freely accessible 3D Web navigation model based on open-source technology that allows the visualization of heterogeneous complex geospatial datasets in the same virtual environment. This solution employs JavaScript libraries based on WebGL technology. The model is accessible through web browsers and does not need software installation from the user side. The case study is the new building of the University of Twente-Faculty of Geo-Information (ITC), located in Enschede (the Netherlands). The developed solution allows switching between heterogeneous datasets (point clouds, BIM, 2D and 3D models) at different scales and visualization (indoor first-person navigation, outdoor navigation, urban navigation). This solution could be employed by governmental stakeholders or the private sector to remotely visualize complex datasets on the web in a unique visualization, and take decisions only based on open-source solutions. Furthermore, this system can incorporate underground data or real-time sensor data from the IoT (Internet of Things) for digital twinning tasks.

    Description

Efficient geovisualization is beneficial for understanding geospatial phenomena, an important research direction for GISers and Cartographers. However, the current research on geovisualization overemphasizes the visual effects while neglecting the prominent representation of crucial information and failing to consider the user's cognitive workload of information processing. Following the laws of visual perception of the human eyes, this article proposes a visual attention-guided augmented representation approach of geographic scenes that involves area of interest computation, background simplification, and compound graphic variables. Finally, we select bridge stress visualization as a case study for experimental analysis. The experi?mental results of eye-tracking show that augmented representation could draw the participants' attention to areas of interest in a short time, increasing their duration of fixations and the accuracy of completing given tasks. These findings suggest that our approach can enhance geographic scenes' cognitive efficiency, offers a new idea for the theoretical studies of geovisualization, and holds promising potential for broader application in various geographical phenomena visualization.
