Transit Service Areas for the San Francisco Bay Region. These areas represent 1/2 mile buffers from existing transit stops. Existing transit stop data was downloaded from the 511 SF Bay 511 General Transit Feed Specification API in January 2020. The initial data set was then simplified by dissolving buffer polygon boundaries by the values found in the agency_id, agency_nm, and route_type columns.

Existing transit routes represent all primary rail, bus, ferry, and light rail routes and were created from static General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS) data downloaded from the Bay Area 511 GTFS API in January 2020. To create the existing transit routes, ESRI Public Transit tools were leveraged as well as open source python libraries such as Pandas. Most routes in this feature set are primary/source routes. The majority of duplicate routes (route features that designate different travel directions, most night routes, and most weekend routes that have the same route name) are not included. The duplicate route features were removed in an attempt to make the feature set easier to use, while maintaining the major, everyday routes for each transit agency.

This data was used by the 511 BIkeMapper and covered the nine counties of the San Francisco Bay Region: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma. The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) periodically collects bicycle facility data from cities and counties throughout the region. As new bikeways were added to the system, more cities and communities of the Bay Area came under the 511 BikeMapper coverage. This data set uses the following bike path classifications:Class I: Off-Street Shared-Use Path - A bikeway physically separated from motorized vehicular traffic by an open space or barrier. Pedestrians, skaters, wheelchair users, joggers, and other non-motorized users typically use shared-use paths.Class II: Bike Lane - Portion of the roadway that has been designated by striping, signing and pavement markings for the preferential or exclusive use of bicycles. Some cities and counties also define wide shoulders as bike lanes. Always ride about 4 feet from parked cars to avoid the door zone.Class III: On-Street Bike Route - Any road or street designated for bicycle travel. These routes are not for the exclusive use of cyclists. Often, routes include residential streets with low auto volumes and speeds.
