    Description

Austin's Communications & Technology Management Department is pleased to provide this zip code dataset for general use, designed to support a variety of research and analysis needs. Please note that while we facilitate access to this data, the dataset is owned and produced by the United States Postal Service (USPS). Users are encouraged to acknowledge USPS as the source when utilizing this dataset in their work.

U.S. ZIP Code Areas (Five-Digit) represents five-digit ZIP Code areas used by the U.S. Postal Service to deliver mail more effectively. The first digit of a five-digit ZIP Code divides the United States into 10 large groups of states numbered from 0 in the Northeast to 9 in the far West. Within these areas, each state is divided into an average of 10 smaller geographical areas, identified by the second and third digits. These digits, in conjunction with the first digit, represent a sectional center facility or a mail processing facility area. The fourth and fifth digits identify a post office, station, branch or local delivery area.

This product is for informational purposes and may not have been prepared for or be suitable for legal, engineering, or surveying purposes. It does not represent an on-the-ground survey and represents only the approximate relative location of property boundaries. This product has been produced by the City of Austin for the sole purpose of geographic reference. No warranty is made by the City of Austin regarding specific accuracy or completeness.

    Description

There were three key objectives to this study: (1) to determine the relative importance of crime-related as well as business-related factors in business relocation decisions, including business ownership, type of business, and business size, (2) to ascertain how businesses respond to crime and fear of crime, such as by moving, adding more security, requesting police protection, or cooperating with other businesses, and (3) to identify the types of crime prevention measures and assistance that businesses currently need and to assess the roles of business associations and police departments in providing enhanced crime prevention assistance. From November 1995 through February 1996 a mail survey was distributed to a sample of three different groups of businesses in Austin's 14 highest crime ZIP codes. The groups consisted of: (1) businesses that remained within the same ZIP code between 1990 and 1993, (2) new firms that either moved into a high-crime ZIP code area between 1990 and 1993 or were created in a high-crime ZIP code between 1990 and 1993, and (3) businesses that relocated from high-crime ZIP code areas to other locations in Austin's metropolitan area or elsewhere in Texas. Variables include type of business, ownership of business, number of employees, reasons for moving or staying in neighborhood, types of crime that affected business, owner's response to business crime, customer safety, and the role of business associations and the police in preventing crime.

    Description

78744 Zip Code Feature Layer This feature layer represents the 78744 zip code boundary within Travis County and is used in this StoryMap to provide geographic context for Austin Public Health (APH) Community Health Worker (CHW) outreach efforts. On June 8, 2024, APH CHW Strike Teams conducted a targeted West Nile Virus (WNV) education campaign in the 78744 zip code, an area with high social vulnerability and environmental factors that may contribute to increased mosquito activity and disease transmission. This outreach aimed to:

Assess community awareness of WNV transmission and prevention strategies Distribute educational materials on mosquito control and personal protection Engage with residents to encourage proactive public health behaviors

Why the 78744 Zip Code? The 78744 zip code was identified as a priority area for WNV education due to:

Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) Considerations – Populations with higher vulnerability may have limited access to health resources or face greater risks from vector-borne diseases. Environmental Risk Factors – Standing water, dense vegetation, and urban drainage patterns that may support higher mosquito populations. Historical Public Health Needs – Previous outreach efforts have highlighted the importance of continued engagement in this area.

Feature Layer Use This feature layer helps visualize the geographic scope of the CHW outreach efforts and supports public health decision-making by aligning intervention strategies with spatial data and community needs. Future applications of this layer may include:

Mapping mosquito surveillance data and environmental risk factors Overlaying additional public health data for targeted outreach Informing response strategies for future vector-borne disease outbreaks

By incorporating geographic data into public health initiatives, Austin Public Health can ensure a more data-driven, equitable, and effective approach to disease prevention and community engagement.

Public Information Requests If you cannot locate the information or records you need online, Section 552.234 of the Texas Public Information Act allows you to submit a written request using the following methods:

    Description

This map displays the survey area of the Community Assessment for Public Health Emergency Response (CASPER) that was conducted in the Eastern Crescent in the Spring of 2023, and was used in the Resilience CASPER 2023 StoryMap. Below are the descriptions of each layer used: The "Area of Interest" layer is the outline that contains 15 zip codes: 78757, 78752, 78753, 78754, 78723, 78724, 78721, 78742, 78744, 78725, 78719, 78758, 78702, 78741, and 78617. These zip codes were defined, as best possible, to match the census blocks within the ESRI Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Community Health Assessment tool as our boundary for the survey. The "Cluster" layer contains the 30 clusters, with a total of 9,053 housing units, that were randomly selected by the GIS tool for a representative sample of 210 households to interview in our defined census blocks. Clusters with zero households were filtered out to ensure they were not selected. One cluster was selected twice for 29 total clusters. The "Climate Vulnerability" layer is not owned by Austin Public Health. The vulnerability index used is calculated by various factors. These factors include social vulnerabilities like income level, health insurance status, or language barriers and environmental exposures like flooding, wildfire, and urban heat. Areas on the map that are red indicate higher levels of vulnerability and exposure. This data can be found at Austin Area Sustainability Indicators (A2SI). The Texas Public Information Act gives you the right to access all government records, except where certain exceptions apply. The public information officer may not ask you why you want the records.
