    Description

    This file contains COVID-19 death counts, death rates, and percent of total deaths by jurisdiction of residence. The data is grouped by different time periods including 3-month period, weekly, and total (cumulative since January 1, 2020). United States death counts and rates include the 50 states, plus the District of Columbia and New York City. New York state estimates exclude New York City. Puerto Rico is included in HHS Region 2 estimates.

    Deaths with confirmed or presumed COVID-19, coded to ICD–10 code U07.1. Number of deaths reported in this file are the total number of COVID-19 deaths received and coded as of the date of analysis and may not represent all deaths that occurred in that period. Counts of deaths occurring before or after the reporting period are not included in the file.

    Data during recent periods are incomplete because of the lag in time between when the death occurred and when the death certificate is completed, submitted to NCHS and processed for reporting purposes. This delay can range from 1 week to 8 weeks or more, depending on the jurisdiction and cause of death.

    Death counts should not be compared across states. Data timeliness varies by state. Some states report deaths on a daily basis, while other states report deaths weekly or monthly.

    The ten (10) United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) regions include the following jurisdictions. Region 1: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont; Region 2: New Jersey, New York, New York City, Puerto Rico; Region 3: Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia; Region 4: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee; Region 5: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Wisconsin; Region 6: Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas; Region 7: Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska; Region 8: Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, Wyoming; Region 9: Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada; Region 10: Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, Washington.

    Rates were calculated using the population estimates for 2021, which are estimated as of July 1, 2021 based on the Blended Base produced by the US Census Bureau in lieu of the April 1, 2020 decennial population count. The Blended Base consists of the blend of Vintage 2020 postcensal population estimates, 2020 Demographic Analysis Estimates, and 2020 Census PL 94-171 Redistricting File (see https://www2.census.gov/programs-surveys/popest/technical-documentation/methodology/2020-2021/methods-statement-v2021.pdf).

    Rates are based on deaths occurring in the specified week/month and are age-adjusted to the 2000 standard population using the direct method (see https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nvsr/nvsr70/nvsr70-08-508.pdf). These rates differ from annual age-adjusted rates, typically presented in NCHS publications based on a full year of data and annualized weekly/monthly age-adjusted rates which have been adjusted to allow comparison with annual rates. Annualization rates presents deaths per year per 100,000 population that would be expected in a year if the observed period specific (weekly/monthly) rate prevailed for a full year.

    Sub-national death counts between 1-9 are suppressed in accordance with NCHS data confidentiality standards. Rates based on death counts less than 20 are suppressed in accordance with NCHS standards of reliability as specified in NCHS Data Presentation Standards for Proportions (available from: https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/series/sr_02/sr02_175.pdf.).

    Description

    As of November 18, 2022, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Africa amounted to around 12.7 million, which represented around two percent of the infections around the world. By the same date, coronavirus cases globally were over 640 million, deaths were over six million, while approximately 620 million people recovered from the disease. On the African continent, South Africa was the most drastically affected country, with more than 3.6 million infections.

    The African continent fighting the pandemic  

    The African continent first came in contact with the coronavirus pandemic on February 14, 2020, in the northernmost part, particularly Egypt. Since then, the different governments took severe restrictive measures to try to curb the spread of the disease. Moreover, the official numbers of the African continent are significantly lower than those of Europe, North America, South America, and Asia. Nevertheless, the infectious disease still managed to have its effects on several countries. South Africa had the highest number of deaths. Morocco and Tunisia, the second and third most affected in Africa, recorded 16,002 and 27,824 deaths, respectively, while Egypt registered at 24,132 as of March 02, 2022.

    Although the African countries still have a long way to fully combat the virus, vaccination programs have been rolled out in the majority of Africa. Also, according to a survey, public opinion in several African countries shows a high willingness to be vaccinated, with Ethiopia having numbers as high as 94 percent. As of March 2022, Egypt was the country administering the highest number of vaccine doses, however, Seychelles had the highest per rate per 100 people .

    Description

    As of March 16, 2022, there was a total of approximately 5.9 million confirmed cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Japan, with around 529 thousand people needing inpatient treatment.

    Development of cases in Japan Generally, the increase of new COVID-19 cases recorded from January to March 2020 in Japan followed a slower trajectory as compared to, for example, China, Europe, or the United States of America. The first reported case of COVID-19 in Japan was confirmed on January 16, 2020, when a man that had returned from Wuhan city, China, was tested positive. The first transmission within Japan was recorded on January 28. The number of new cases then increased tenfold in February. April saw a further acceleration of the infection rate. Consequently, the Japanese government declared a nationwide state of emergency that month. The government announced a state of emergency for the second time in January 2021, the third time in April 2021, and the forth time in the July 2021.

    Vaccine rollout The Japanese government started the distribution of COVID-19 vaccination in February 2021, mainly for medical professionals. The administration of vaccination for general citizens commenced in April for senior citizens. The vaccine rate of the population was just over 74.7 percent for second doses as of March 2022.

    Description

    A survey from 2023 of 39 countries around the world found that adults from Indonesia were the most likely to report they were very healthy or healthy with almost 96 percent of respondents. Vietnam and Mexico followed with around 93 percent of adults in these countries stating they were very healthy or healthy. Among the countries that were surveyed, Nigeria, Poland, and Chile, were the least likely to report being healthy. Factors for good health Unsurprisingly, this survey also found that Indonesia was more likely to positively report different health factors such as fitness and weight. Around 94 percent of adults from Indonesia reported their weight and fitness as very good or quite good. In comparison, around 64 percent of adults from the United States stated their weight was very good or quite good. However, those from Paraguay were the most likely to report their stress level/mental health was very good or quite good, followed by Indonesia and Vietnam. Around 97 percent of adults from Paraguay felt their stress level/mental health was very good or quite good, compared to just 36 percent of those in Argentina, the lowest share among the surveyed countries. Biggest global health problems A survey of over 23,000 adults from 31 countries found mental health was the biggest health problem respondents said was facing their country in 2024. This was followed by cancer, stress, and obesity. Interestingly, only 16 percent of respondents stated heart disease was the biggest health problem in their country, despite heart disease being the leading cause of death worldwide. In 2021, ischemic heart disease caused just over nine million deaths worldwide. COVID-19 was the second leading cause of death that year, with 8.7 million people losing their lives to the disease. Other global leading causes of death are stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lower respiratory infections, and lung cancer.
