The Stroke Recovery in Underserved Populations 2005-2006 study was created to address the National Institute on Aging (NIA) Request For Application entitled "Research on Mind-Body Interactions and Health" (RFA OD-03-008). It addressed the NIA interest in "the impact of optimism, happiness, or a positive attitude on well-being and health; and social functioning and health." The study examined how positive emotion (e.g., joy, gratitude, love, contentment) and social networks independently and interactively contribute to recovery of functional status after stroke within two underserved groups. The specific study aims were to: Examine recovery of functional status (motor and cognitive function), for White, African American and Hispanic persons with stroke discharged from rehabilitation facilities Examine the contributions of positive emotion and social networks on recovery of functional status (motor and cognitive function), for White, African American, and Hispanic persons with stroke discharged from rehabilitation facilities; and Examine the interaction between positive emotion and social networks on recovery of functional status (motor and cognitive function) for White, African American, and Hispanic persons with stroke discharged from rehabilitation facilities. The data were collected by the IT Health Track at four time points: at admission and discharge from rehabilitation facility, and 80-180 days and 365-425 days after discharge. These data emphasize recovery of motor and cognitive functional status, positive emotion, and social networks The dataset contains 226 variables and 1219 cases from 11 rehabilitation facilities across the United States.

The SCIRehab study collected data about 1,376 people with spinal cord injury across 7 disciplines at 6 facilities in the United States between 2007 and 2009 and followed for one year (until 2010). The 7 disciplines included in the study are Physical Therapy, and Occupational Therapy, Psychology, Therapeutic Recreation, Social Work, Nursing, and Speech Language Pathology. These data include information gathered during 462,455 timed rehabilitation interventions in 282,999 treatment sessions provided by 1,094 clinicians. This study seeks to understand the relationship between rehabilitation and outcomes and used practice-based evidence methods to relate the details of the rehabilitation process to outcomes after controlling for individual demographic and injury characteristics. The 13 key outcomes include function and residence at discharge, 6 months and 1 year post injury, rehospitalization in the first year, 4 dimensions of societal participation, work or school attendance, depression, presence of pressure ulcers, and life satisfaction at 6 months and 1 year post injury.

This study was conducted at the Medical University of South Carolina over the span of one year to delineate the cause/effect relationship between neural output and the biomechanical functions being executed in walking in post-stroke patients. Kinematic, kinetic, and electromyography (EMG) data were collected from 27 post-stroke subjects and from 17 healthy control subjects. Each subject walked on a treadmill at their self-selected walking speed in addition to a randomized block design of four steady-state mobility capability tasks: walking at maximum speed, and walking at self-selected speed with maximum cadence, maximum step length, and maximum step height.

The Analysis of Longitudinal Claims Databases (R1 Part A): Aging Trajectories of Chronic Disease, Psychological Morbidity, and Mortality, United States is the first of a three-part project that examined claims data from Medicare, Medicaid, and/or Optum databases to explore aging trajectories, use of preventative services, and healthcare outcomes for individuals with several types of physical disabilities. There is a well-established interrelationship between access to healthcare and the age-related co-occurrence of two or more chronic conditions, adverse health events, and cost of care among people with a physical disability (PWPD). However, the extent to which health outcomes and healthcare costs interact with a wide range of social factors, including type and depth of insurance coverage, has received little attention. There is also scarce evidence regarding the aging trajectories of chronic diseases and psychological conditions among PWPD, as well as how these factors contribute to healthcare costs and adverse health events, including early mortality. Three specific aims guide this research investigation: Determine the longitudinal trends of cardiometabolic diseases, the age-related co-occurrence of two or more chronic conditions (or multimorbidity), diagnosed physiological conditions, and musculoskeletal diseases common among individuals diagnosed with a physical disability ordered by type of insurance (public vs. private). Identify the independent and joint contributions of medical factors (e.g., age, multimorbidity, disease severity, etc.) and social and environmental factors (e.g., income, education, and insurance) on adverse health events (including mortality), healthcare use, and costs. Quantify how changes in medical and social factors predict or facilitate adverse health events and healthcare costs among individuals with specific diagnoses of physical disabilities.
