Introduction
X Statistics (Twitter): X, previously referred to as Twitter, is the platform where the first tweet was posted by Jack Dorsey (the CEO of Twitter) on March 21, 2006. It took a total of 3 years, 2 months, and 1 day to achieve the significant milestone of one billion tweets on the platform.
Twitter became a publicly traded company in November 2013. Its user engagement increased a year later, with daily tweets increasing from 20,000 to 60,000 during the South by Southwest conference. Since that time, it has changed into a primary venue for users to share their daily experiences, discuss their interests, and connect with individuals globally. At that point, Twitter had approximately 200 million users.
Elon Musk acquired Twitter for $44 billion to change it into a private entity. Following this acquisition, multiple changes have occurred, including the rebranding to X. Currently, X ranks among the top six social networking applications in the United States, boasting over 500 million users worldwide.
According to a global online survey conducted in 2022, 55 percent of weekly X/Twitter users stated that they wanted to see informative content on the social media site. Overall, almost 40 percent of users said that they wanted to see relevant psots, whilst a third of users said they wanted to see funny content on the social media app. Although the majority of users desired informative content, 35 percent said they liked to see trendy posts.

In the third quarter of 2023, Facebook reported around four billion monthly core Family product users. The United States and China account for the most high-profile social platforms Most top ranked social networks with more than 100 million users originated in the United States, but services like Chinese social networks WeChat, QQ or video sharing app Douyin have also garnered mainstream appeal in their respective regions due to local context and content. Douyin’s popularity has led to the platform releasing an international version of its network: a little app called TikTok. How many people use social media? The leading social networks are usually available in multiple languages and enable users to connect with friends or people across geographical, political, or economic borders. In 2025, social networking sites are estimated to reach 5.42 billion users and these figures are still expected to grow as mobile device usage and mobile social networks increasingly gain traction in previously underserved markets.
As of August 2023, X (formerly Twitter) CEO Elon Musk was the most followed person on the platform, with little over 140 million followers. Additionally, former U.S. President Barack Obama amassed 132 million followers on the micro-blogging service. In April 2023, Musk changed Twitter's legal name to X Corp.
Celebrities and Twitter
Founded in 2006 as Twitter, X is an online social networking and microblogging service that allows users to post text-based status updates and messages of up to 280 characters in length. As of the fourth quarter of 2020, X had 192 million monetizable daily active users (mDAU) worldwide.
X provides a near-instant access channel to celebrities. The majority of the top ten most-followed X accounts are entertainers who use the medium to communicate with fans, spread relevant news regarding their work or work on their public image. The near-instant gratification through a stream of direct updates from celebrities or personalities as well as the feeling of belonging to a particular group of fans is a popular reason for social media users to use X. In order to establish authenticity of identity on X, accounts of people from high-interest areas such as music, fashion, entertainment, politics, media, business or other areas as well as individuals at high risk of impersonation are verified by X. The verification badge symbolizes that the account is maintained by a legitimate source.
Major sporting events and industry award shows such as the Super Bowl, the Grammy Awards or Academy Awards generate lots of online buzz on X. The online discussion allows users to participate in the success of celebrities who often post behind-the-scenes photo tweets or commentaries. On-set or in-concert tweets are further methods of celebrities enhancing their appeal, and level of fan interaction.

The undertaking of several studies of political phenomena in social media mandates the operationalization of the notion of political stance of users and contents involved. Relevant examples include the study of segregation and polarization online, the study of political diversity in content diets in social media, or AI explainability. While many research designs rely on operationalizations best suited for the US setting, few allow addressing more general design, in which users and content might take stances on multiple ideology and issue dimensions, going beyond traditional Liberal-Conservative or Left-Right scales. To advance the study of more general online ecosystems, we present a dataset of X/Twitter population of users in the French political Twittersphere and web domains embedded in a political space spanned by dimensions measuring attitudes towards immigration, the EU, liberal values, elites and institutions, nationalism and the environment. We provide several benchmarks validating the positions of these entities (based on both, LLM and human annotations), and discuss several applications for this dataset.
