The Canadian Environmental Sustainability Indicators (CESI) program provides data and information to track Canada's performance on key environmental sustainability issues. The Trends in Canada's bird populations indicator reports population trends of Canada's native bird species from 1970 to 2022. Bird species are categorized into species groups based on their feeding or habitat requirements. Because birds are sensitive to environmental changes, they can be used as an indicator of ecosystem health and the state of biodiversity. Tracking the status of Canada's birds can help to identify the impacts of these changes, and can also help to set priorities, evaluate management actions and track the recovery of species at risk. Information is provided to Canadians in a number of formats including charts and graphs, HTML and CSV data tables and downloadable reports. See the supplementary documentation for data sources and details on how those data were collected and how the indicator was calculated. Healthy lifestyles in Canada
More people than ever are attempting to lead a healthier lifestyle by making conscious decisions and Canadians are no exception. Roughly a third of Canadians made an effort to drink more water and other fluids in 2019. Just under ten percent took the approach of eating smaller portions, while just under five percent of Canadians ate less red meat.
Access to healthy food
In 2019, Canadians most frequently went to supermarkets in order to find and purchase healthy foods. Other common retail destinations consumers would go to were warehouse clubs and farmers’ markets. One year earlier, opinions were mixed on whether or not it will become harder to obtain healthy foods in the future. A quarter of Canadians believed the situation would worsen, while another 25 percent believed it would become better. The remainder, however, believed that getting access to healthy food would stay more or less the same in the future.

Monthly, seasonal and annual trends of mean hourly sea level and station pressure change (hectopascals) based on homogenized station data (AHCCD) are available. Trends are calculated using the Theil-Sen method using the station’s full period of available data. The availability of surface pressure trends will vary by station; if more than 5 consecutive years are missing data or more than 10% of the data within the time series is missing, a trend was not calculated.

This first version of the dataset (CanHoPmlyV1) contains homogenized time series of monthly total precipitation for 425 long-term stations in Canada. As detailed in Wang et al. (2023), it is based on the quality-controlled version 2020 of the Adjusted Daily Rainfall and Snowfall (AdjDlyRS) dataset (Wang et al. 2017; available at https://open.canada.ca/data/en/dataset/d8616c52-a812-44ad-8754-7bcc0d8de305), and on daily total precipitation data from automated gauges (including Belfort, Fisher & Porter, Nipher, Geonor, and Pluvio), with some records from neighbouring stations being joined to form long-term data series. Version 1 of ANUSPLIN surfaces of the adjusted monthly precipitation (MacDonald et al. 2021, available at https://open.canada.ca/data/en/dataset/779ea77a-0ad1-42f2-853e-833e1cbb9a13) was used to infill temporal data gaps in the 425 data series. A comprehensive semi-automatic data homogenization procedure was used to homogenize the data series. The aforementioned ANUSPLIN data and the Twentieth Century Reanalysis 20CRv3 ensemble-mean series of monthly precipitation (Slivinski et al., 2021) were used as reference in the homogeneity tests (Wang et al., 2023). The homogenized dataset provides more realistic trend estimates and shows better spatial consistency of trends than does the raw dataset (Wang et al. 2023). References: Wang, X.L, Y. Feng, V. Y. S. Market research operators in Canada suffered from modest swings in revenue stemming from economic volatility for most of the period. While the period started with a dip in revenue because of the pandemic, the changing media landscape and the ability to conduct online market research kept sales from dropping drastically. Market research is needed in times of economic uncertainty since it helps customers navigate unknown waters. Although the economy reopened, a spike in inflationary pressures severely harmed revenue in 2021 and 2023, as corporate clients endured volatility across their balance sheets, which dampened demand for operators' services. This economic volatility also dampened profit for operators, with lower consumer confidence playing a key role in this trend. Even so, with interest rates finally falling in the middle of 2024, revenue came back on track and is set to push up an estimated 8.3% in 2025 alone. Overall, revenue is set to swell at a CAGR of 1.3% to an estimated $1.5 billion as the need for market research has recovered. As the popularity of digital media and e-commerce has risen, operators have adapted their services to provide up-to-date and more granular analysis reflecting the data available from these channels. Smaller, less costly single-operator companies flooded the industry amid low barriers to entry and improving economic conditions. Even so, the shifting media landscape and rapidly changing consumer trends have encouraged some operators to consolidate and streamline their operations, bolstering competition among existing companies. As corporations endured upticks in sales, they sought the expertise of market research companies to expand operations and revamp their product and service offerings. By 2030, Canadians' consumption activity will change significantly, requiring more consumer research and new research methods. Operators are in a position to capitalize on emergent trends and business structures. Those who succeed in evolving alongside the ever-changing landscape will find new verticals and horizontals to climb into. As new technologies and innovations like real-time data and insights expand, market research will remain a central pillar of business strategy, ensuring revenue growth. Overall, revenue is set to expand at a CAGR of 3.9%, reaching $1.9 billion in 2030.

The Canadian Environmental Sustainability Indicators (CESI) program provides data and information to track Canada's performance on key environmental sustainability issues. The Species at risk population trends indicator shows whether the population and distribution trends of species at risk are consistent with the objectives set out in final recovery strategies or management plans. The indicator provides a preliminary assessment of whether recovery or management efforts are on track. Information is provided to Canadians in a number of formats including: static and interactive maps, charts and graphs, HTML and CSV data tables and downloadable reports.
