    Although the American Community Survey (ACS) produces population, demographic and housing unit estimates, the decennial census is the official source of population totals for April 1st of each decennial year. In between censuses, the Census Bureau's Population Estimates Program produces and disseminates the official estimates of the population for the nation, states, counties, cities, and towns and estimates of housing units and the group quarters population for states and counties..Information about the American Community Survey (ACS) can be found on the ACS website. Supporting documentation including code lists, subject definitions, data accuracy, and statistical testing, and a full list of ACS tables and table shells (without estimates) can be found on the Technical Documentation section of the ACS website.Sample size and data quality measures (including coverage rates, allocation rates, and response rates) can be found on the American Community Survey website in the Methodology section..Source: U.S. Census Bureau, 2019-2023 American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates.ACS data generally reflect the geographic boundaries of legal and statistical areas as of January 1 of the estimate year.     This layer shows housing units in structure by tenure (owner or renter). This is shown by tract, county, and state centroids. This service is updated annually to contain the most currently released American Community Survey (ACS) 5-year data, and contains estimates and margins of error. There are also additional calculated attributes related to this topic, which can be mapped or used within analysis. This layer is symbolized by the count and percent of housing units that are single-family detached homes. To see the full list of attributes available in this service, go to the "Data" tab, and choose "Fields" at the top right. Boundaries are updated at the same time as the data updates (annually), and the boundary vintage appropriately matches the data vintage as specified by the Census. These are Census boundaries with water and/or coastlines erased for cartographic and mapping purposes. For census tracts, the water cutouts are derived from a subset of the 2020 Areal Hydrography boundaries offered by TIGER. Water bodies and rivers which are 50 million square meters or larger (mid to large sized water bodies) are erased from the tract level boundaries, as well as additional important features. For state and county boundaries, the water and coastlines are derived from the coastlines of the 2023 500k TIGER Cartographic Boundary Shapefiles. These are erased to more accurately portray the coastlines and Great Lakes. The original AWATER and ALAND fields are still available as attributes within the data table (units are square meters). The States layer contains 52 records - all US states, Washington D.C., and Puerto RicoCensus tracts with no population that occur in areas of water, such as oceans, are removed from this data service (Census Tracts beginning with 99).Percentages and derived counts, and associated margins of error, are calculated values (that can be identified by the "_calc_" stub in the field name), and abide by the specifications defined by the American Community Survey.Field alias names were created based on the Table Shells file available from the American Community Survey Summary File Documentation page.Negative values (e.g., -4444...) have been set to null, with the exception of -5555... which has been set to zero.     This collection provides 100-percent data for states and their subareas in hierarchical sequence down to the block group level. Also included are complete summaries for places, census tract/block numbering areas, block groups, congressional districts, and consolidated cities. Population items include age, race, sex, marital status, Hispanic origin, household type, and household relationship. Population items are crosstabulated by age, race, Hispanic origin, or sex. Housing items include occupancy/vacancy status, tenure, units in structure, contract rent, meals included in rent, value, and number of rooms in housing unit. Housing data are crosstabulated by race or Hispanic origin of householder or by tenure. Selected aggregates and medians are also provided. Data are presented in 37 population tables and 63 housing tables. The file for Puerto Rico (Part 72) also contains 100-percent data in hierarchical sequence down to the block group level. Also included are complete summaries for sub-barrio, census track/block numbering areas, block group, municipio, and place. The population items include age, sex, marital status, group quarters, household type, and household relationship. Population items are crosstabulated by age and sex. Housing items include occupancy/vacancy status, tenure, units in structure, contract rent, plumbing facilities, condominium status, value, and number of rooms in housing unit. The unit of observation for these data files is the census tract. There is one file for each of 48 states and the District of Columbia. The Census Bureau did not issue data for Vermont and Wyoming because these two states were not tracted in 1970.

    Prepared by the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research, the block group subset was extracted from the Census of Population and Housing, 2000, Summary File 3 (SF3). The SF3 data contain information compiled from the questions asked of a sample of persons and housing units enumerated in Census 2000. Population items include sex, age, race, Hispanic or Latino origin, household relationship, marital status, caregiving by grandparents, language and ability to speak English, ancestry, place of birth, citizenship status and year of entry to the United States, migration, place of work, journey to work, school enrollment, educational attainment, veteran status, disability, employment status, industry, occupation, class of worker, income, and poverty status. Housing items include housing unit vacancy status, housing unit tenure (owner/renter), number of rooms, number of bedrooms, year moved into unit, occupants per room, units in structure, year structure built, heating fuel, telephone service, plumbing and kitchen facilities, vehicles available, value of home, rent, and shelter costs. The information in SF3 is presented in 813 tables, one variable per table cell, plus additional variables with geographic information. However, only 409 of these tables are shown for the block group and higher levels of geography. The remaining 404 tables, which are shown for the census tract and higher levels of geography, were excluded from the block group subset. Cases in the summary file data are classified by levels of observation, known as "summary levels" in the Census Bureau's nomenclature. The block group subset comprises all of the cases in the SF3 data for summary level 150. Five data files are provided with this collection. There is a block group subset for each of the four census regions (Northeast, Midwest, South, and West), plus a national subset that covers all of the regions.

    This data collection includes housing data by census tract for San Diego County in 1970. Sample counts (5%, 15% and 20%) are derived from the Census of Population and Housing, 1970: Summary Tape File 4A: Housing. Housing characteristics include housing value, number of housing units in structure, number of rooms in housing unit, year structure was built, occupancy/vacancy status, tenure, rent, type of heating fuel, source of water, and presence of an air conditioner and other home appliances. Counts are available for the total, Negro, and Spanish American populations. Negros are defined as a racial category by the Census Bureau. In California, Spanish Americans include "Persons of Spanish language or Spanish surname". The California state 4A data file was processed with PERL and SPSS by the Social Science Data Collection (SSDC) staff of the University of California, San Diego Library from Census Bureau data processed by DUALabs, Inc. and archived at the Odum Institute. PERL script concatenated record type codes and output six data files that match the record types described in the codebook: tables 001-040, tables 041-107, tables 108-119, tables 120-130, tables 131-152 and Spanish American tables 153-200. These six files were subsequently processed with SPSS to extract tracts for San Diego County and recompute some aggregate housing value data content. Users may browse a list of data variables (tables and cells) included in these six data files. The Census Bureau produced printed reports for 1970 Summary Tape File 4A. The UCSD Geisel Library maintains printed reports and census tract maps in 1970 Census of Population and Housing Census Tracts, San Diego, Calif. (SSH Docs US Stacks C 3.223/11:970/188).

    The United States Virgin Islands Summary File contains data on population and housing subjects compiled from questions on the 2010 United States Virgin Islands Census questionnaire. Housing subjects include acreage, agricultural sales, business on property, computer ownership, internet service, kitchen facilities, cooking fuel, mortgage status, number of rooms, number of bedrooms, occupancy status, occupants per room, plumbing facilities, purchase of water from water vendor, gross rent, condominium status and fee, mobile home costs, selected monthly owner costs, sewage disposal, source of water, telephone service available, tenure, units in structure, vacancy status, value of home, vehicles available, year householder moved into unit and year structure built. The data are organized in 548 tables, one variable per table cell, which are presented at up to 21 levels of observation, including the United States Virgin Islands as a whole, islands, census subdistricts, places (census designated places and towns), estates, census tracts, block groups, blocks and 5-digit ZIP Code Tabulation Areas. Altogether, 110 tables are presented at the block level and higher, 288 at the block group level and higher and 150 at the census tract level and higher. Additionally, the tables are iterated for the urban and rural geographic components of islands and 21 geographic components of the United States Virgin Islands as a whole: 15 urban components (total urban, urbanized areas, urban clusters, and urbanized areas and urban clusters of various population sizes) and 6 rural components (total rural, rural areas outside places, rural areas inside places and inside places of various population sizes). Due to problems in the initial version, the Census Bureau ultimately issued the Summary File as two data products. The first or main release comprises 50 data files with all the tables except 11 tables on selected monthly owner costs, the tables HBG66, HBG67, HBG68, HBG69, HBG70, HBG71, HBG72, HBG73, HCT19, HCT20 and HCT21. The second, supplemental release consists of a document file with the 11 tables on selected monthly owner costs. ICPSR provides each product as a separate ZIP archive. The archive with the supplemental release also includes additional technical documentation prepared by the Bureau.

    This collection provides 100-percent data for states and their subareas in hierarchical sequence down to the block level. Also included are complete summaries for places, census tract/block numbering areas, block groups, consolidated cities, Alaska Native Regional Corporation, state portion of Metropolitan Statistical Area/Consolidated Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA/CMSA), and state portion of Urbanized Area. Population items include age, race, sex, marital status, Hispanic origin, household type, and household relationship. Population items are crosstabulated by age, race, Hispanic origin, or sex. Housing items include occupancy/vacancy status, tenure, units in structure, contract rent, meals included in rent, value, and number of rooms in housing unit. Housing data are crosstabulated by race or Hispanic origin of householder or by tenure. Selected aggregates and medians are also provided. Data are presented in 37 population tables and 63 housing tables.

File 1A also has inventory (complete) summaries for the following geographic areas: place, census tract, block group, congressional district (101st Congress) and consolidated cities.

Description

Although the American Community Survey (ACS) produces population, demographic and housing unit estimates, the decennial census is the official source of population totals for April 1st of each decennial year. In between censuses, the Census Bureau's Population Estimates Program produces and disseminates the official estimates of the population for the nation, states, counties, cities, and towns and estimates of housing units and the group quarters population for states and counties..Information about the American Community Survey (ACS) can be found on the ACS website. Supporting documentation including code lists, subject definitions, data accuracy, and statistical testing, and a full list of ACS tables and table shells (without estimates) can be found on the Technical Documentation section of the ACS website.Sample size and data quality measures (including coverage rates, allocation rates, and response rates) can be found on the American Community Survey website in the Methodology section..Source: U.S. Census Bureau, 2019-2023 American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates.ACS data generally reflect the geographic boundaries of legal and statistical areas as of January 1 of the estimate year. For more information, see Geography Boundaries by Year..Data are based on a sample and are subject to sampling variability. The degree of uncertainty for an estimate arising from sampling variability is represented through the use of a margin of error. The value shown here is the 90 percent margin of error. The margin of error can be interpreted roughly as providing a 90 percent probability that the interval defined by the estimate minus the margin of error and the estimate plus the margin of error (the lower and upper confidence bounds) contains the true value. In addition to sampling variability, the ACS estimates are subject to nonsampling error (for a discussion of nonsampling variability, see ACS Technical Documentation). The effect of nonsampling error is not represented in these tables..Users must consider potential differences in geographic boundaries, questionnaire content or coding, or other methodological issues when comparing ACS data from different years. Statistically significant differences shown in ACS Comparison Profiles, or in data users' own analysis, may be the result of these differences and thus might not necessarily reflect changes to the social, economic, housing, or demographic characteristics being compared. For more information, see Comparing ACS Data..Estimates of urban and rural populations, housing units, and characteristics reflect boundaries of urban areas defined based on 2020 Census data. As a result, data for urban and rural areas from the ACS do not necessarily reflect the results of ongoing urbanization..Explanation of Symbols:- The estimate could not be computed because there were an insufficient number of sample observations. For a ratio of medians estimate, one or both of the median estimates falls in the lowest interval or highest interval of an open-ended distribution.
