Different techniques and machines allow radiologists and other health professionals to take a picture of the structures and activities occurring in the body. The best-known types of diagnostic imaging are radiography (X-rays), ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), and magnet resonance imaging (MRI). The global top 3 companies The global diagnostic imaging market is dominated by three companies which are all expected to maintain a share of about 20 or more percent until 2024. These three companies are German Siemens (Healthineers), U.S.-based General Electric Healthcare, and Philips from the Netherlands. The total global diagnostic imaging market currently is estimated at around 40 billion U.S. dollars. One of the main drivers for the market is the growing demand for early stage diagnoses of chronic diseases of an increasingly aging population, especially in developed countries. The importance of medical imaging Today, medical diagnosis without diagnostic imaging is hardly imaginable. It makes it possible to take a detailed image of the human body and his structures, thus allowing an exact diagnosis and to choose the most appropriate treatment. Although most types of diagnostic imaging are painless, some require a patient to remain still for an extended period inside a machine, which causes problems for some patients, i.e. claustrophobia. Other methods could involve exposure to some radiation or being anesthetized. The fact that there are, for example, annually 35-40 million MRI scans in the United States alone, shows the massive impact and importance of medical imaging in today’s health care.

    Description

Diagnostic imaging centers play a crucial role in the US healthcare system, serving as the primary point of contact for patients seeking diagnostic imaging services. Imaging centers receive referrals from various healthcare providers, including hospitals, primary care physicians and specialists. An aging older adult population's expanding medical needs drive growing medical spending, benefiting centers, as aging adults have a higher incidence of disease and injury. The pandemic's disruption to healthcare spending disrupted diagnostic imaging, as healthcare services focused on emergency care and coronavirus patients. However, despite being volatile, imaging centers experienced recovering patient volumes as critical economic drivers boosted growth later in the period. In all, revenue grew at a CAGR of 1.7% to an estimated $26.3 billion over the past five years through 2024, with revenue rising an estimated 2.7% in 2024 alone. Staffing shortages and burnout at imaging centers were symptomatic of the pandemic. However, centers are turning to telehealth and artificial intelligence (AI) tools to provide cost savings, create clinical efficiency and reduce radiologists' workloads while offering improved patient outcomes. Still, robust integration of AI remains a challenge. Advances in imaging equipment are also available, but high purchasing costs limit their adoption. Other healthcare providers, including hospitals, urgent care centers and primary care doctors, can rent or own the tools to conduct diagnostic imaging to provide services and steer consumers away from competitive prices. The diagnostic imaging landscape will become less fragmented, but consolidation activity will strengthen as cost and competitive pressures strain profit. Reimbursements, determined by private insurance providers, will be impacted by the economy's employment levels and Medicare and Medicaid funding levels. Cost pressures will incentivize small, freestanding imaging centers to join groups, and more extensive health systems with negotiating power and economies of scale will wrap in smaller centers. These structural changes and adoption of new technology will foster growth and industry revenue is expected to expand at a CAGR of 3.4% to $31.1 billion in 2029.
