    In 2005, Bayer CropScience generated around 5.9 billion euros of revenue. By 2022, the revenue of Bayer CropScience had grown to 25.2 billion euros. However, there was a drop to some 23.3 billion euros in 2023. Bayer CropScience is a subgroup of Bayer AG and manufactures products for crop protection and nonagricultural pest control. It is also active in seeds and plant traits. Bayer CropScience was formed in 2002 after the pharmaceutical giant acquired Aventis CropScience.

    Bayer’s acquisition of Monsanto

    Monsanto was an agrochemical company dedicated to the production of genetically modified seeds and other crop protection chemicals. The glyphosate-based herbicide Roundup is one of their best-known products. In 2016, after several offers, Bayer finalized a deal with a purchase value of 66 billion U.S. dollars, which translated into 128 U.S. dollars per share of the company.

    Main competitors of Bayer CropScience

    Syngenta is Bayer CropScience’s main competitor. In 2022, Syngenta derived over 16 billion U.S. dollars from crop protection chemicals, while seed sales amounted to some four billion dollars. Other leading companies in the crop protection sector include BASF and Corteva. The Agricultural Solutions business segment of German chemical company BASF generated a revenue of approximately 10 billion euros in 2023, whereas Delaware-based company Corteva Agriscience’s revenue surpassed 17 billion U.S. dollars in that same year. Corteva Agriscience was established as an independent company in 2019, after the spinoff of the DowDuPont conglomerate.
