    Description

The Great Recession of 2008-2009 caused a dramatic drop in the volume of world trade, after two decades of nearly unbroken growth in export growth across the globe. The Global Financial Crisis, which began in the United States in the Summer of 2007, but quickly spread to other regions, caused international flows of money to freeze. This lack of international financing in the global economy led to a drop in aggregate demand, as well as causing many goods exporters to be unable to finance short-term expenditures on credit. World merchandise exports collapsed in 2009, falling by around one-fifth. This fall was made up quickly in the recovery, however, as exports already surpassed their 2008 levels by 2011.

    Description

We study the relationship between domestic-demand shocks and exports, using data for Spanish manufacturing firms in 2002-13. Exploiting plausibly exogenous geographical variation caused by the Great Recession, we find that firms whose domestic sales declined more experienced a larger increase in export flows, controlling for firms’ supply determinants. This result illustrates the capacity of export markets to counteract the negative impact of local demand shocks. By structurally estimating a heterogeneous-firm model of exporting with non-constant marginal costs of production, we conclude that these firm-level responses accounted for half of the spectacular increase in Spanish goods exports over the period 2009-13.

    Description

In 2022, exports from Israel to Asian countries reached a value of over **** billion U.S. dollars. This was a moderate increase compared to the previous year. In recent years, the trade ties between Israel and many Asian countries have been strengthened significantly, including the import trade in a wide variety of goods. For instance, in 2021, imports from Asia into Israel  accumulated an amount of more than **** billion U.S. dollars.

China as an important trade partner

Israel has many important trade partners in Asia, including India, Japan, and South Korea. However, China is the key trade partner. In general, Israel maintains close and diversifying economic relations with China. Consequently, in 2022, Exports from Israel to china reached over *** billion U.S. dollars. In terms of imports, Israel deals with a wide range of products such as electronics and textiles. The total import value from China to Israel  amounted to more than **** billion U.S. dollars in 2022.

    Development of strong tourism ties

There is an extensive tourism relationship between Israel and Asian countries. The launch of airline routes to destinations in the Far East helped the development of tourism between Israel and countries in the region. Tourists arrive in Israel from many Asian countries, especially South Korea and Japan. In 2020, the number of tourists from South Korea in Israel amounted to **** thousand, which was a decrease compared to the previous year. However, the recession in number was largely a result of the global Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in March 2020.

    Description

Abstract The war in Ukraine has had a marked economic impact. However, since Russia is a net producer of important commodities, the impact of sanctions on its economy was less than expected. But what would happen if there was a war involving a country that was a net importer of commodities? In the case of a possible China-US conflict over Taiwan, the impact on the world economy would be different, with a deeper recession around the world, but the impact on the Brazilian economy would still be positive on account of the possibility that would remain of agricultural exports to China.

The share of extra-EU exports - that is, exports from EU countries to non-EU countries - that go to China tripled over the period from 2002 to 2022. China's development as a key export market accelerated particularly quickly following the global recession of 2009, as China's growing middle classes propped up global consumer demand. While China's share of extra-EU exports increased consistently up until 2020, it has dropped for two consecutive years in 2021 and 2022, falling by ***%. Nevertheless, the absolute value of EU exports to China has continued to rise.

    Description

This statistic shows Iran's export of goods from 2013 to 2024. In 2024, Iran exported goods approximately worth ***** billion U.S. dollars. Iran's export struggle The Iranian economy was not spared from the global economic crisis in 2009, but Iranian exports seemed to recover from the global economic recession in 2011 at first. However, export figures dropped thereafter because of sanctions imposed by the United States and the European Union (EU) due to supposed Iran nuclear activities. This new round of sanctions spurred negative growth in 2012 and 2013 and growth dropped during the same period by around 200 billion U.S. dollars. While Iran has one of the largest oil reserves globally, daily oil production has decreased significantly since the first sanctions from the United States were put in place back in 1978. Because of a history of sanctions from Europe and the United States, neither region is among Iran’s most important export partners. While Iran had been hoping to emerge from sanctions this year, hoping to overcome international isolation and recovering lost revenue, recent tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran may cripple their progress. Saudi Arabia would prefer the sanctions against Iran remain, since relations between the two countries have gotten worse. Additionally, where Saudi Arabia is a stronger ally to the west concerning Syria, Iran leans the other way. This situation could leave Iran once again struggling to overcome its isolation from the west.

    Description

Abstract Brazil has historically played a fundamental role in receiving Argentinian industrial exports. In 2014, Brazilian imports began to fall as a result of the economic recession, a fact that strongly affected the industrial exports to Brazil. In this context, the objective of this work is to analyze the impact that the fall in exports to Brazil has had on the Argentine industrial production. For the period 2011-2016, as the industrial exports accounted for near 80% of total exports to Brazil, the fall in the sector’s exports represented a reduction of 22% in industrial production. At a disaggregated level, the branches that show the greatest impact are the automotive sector and the manufacture of chemical products, followed by paper, medical instruments and electrical machinery and instruments.

The U.S. takes third place in global aluminum sheet, plate, and foil exports with a 12% share (based on USD), following China (19%) and Germany (17%). In 2015, the U.S. exported 4,007 million USD, which was 2% under the previous year',s value. From 2007 to 2015, U.S. exports on the aluminum sheet market showed mixed dynamics. A dramatic plunge in 2009 was followed by a recovery over the next two years. In 2011, U.S. aluminum sheet, plate, and foil exports surpassed their pre-recession level of 2008. Over 2012-2013, the value of exports continued to grow, decelerating to a modest pace. In the last two years, that growth lost momentum, turning into a slight decline through to 2015.

    Description

The statistic shows the trade balance of goods (exports minus imports of goods) in Canada from 2014 to 2024. A positive value means a trade surplus, a negative trade balance means a trade deficit. In 2024, the trade deficit of goods in Canada amounted to about **** billion U.S. dollars. Trade with Canada Canada reported a trade surplus until 2009 when the country’s trade balance went negative for the first time in recent history. Its deficit was ignited at the height of the global recession, and the value of exports decreased significantly at that time. It is only now showing signs of a recovery. Meanwhile, while imports decreased during the recession as well, they bounced back faster than exports. Currently, Canada maintains neither a trade deficit nor a trade surplus as both imports and exports amount to around *** billion U.S. dollars worth of goods. Canada is hoping this will continue, and it is looking to lower tariffs on exports in order to further boost the economy and increase exports. Canada has a long and strong trading relationship with the United States - Canada’s southern neighbor is without a doubt its most important export and import partner. Overall, Canada maintains an export advantage over the United States; maintaining greater export flows than import flows. The U.S. dollar is also worth more than the Canadian dollar, favoring further exports from Canada. China and Mexico also import Canadian goods, but significantly less than the United States.

    Description

Dataset with data to study the interaction of emigration and immigration with foreign direct investment, exports and imports, and international remittances. The sample comprises 112 countries with which Spain has closely interconnected migratory, commercial and investment exchanges, and they focus both on the period prior to the great recession, 1998–2007, and on the subsequent period, 2008–2016. We combined several sources: data on emigration and immigration from the Spanish National Statistics Institute, INE, ("Residential Variations Statistics"); data on Spanish FDI abroad, sourced from the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Finance, Datainvex (2018); and data on international trade (exports and imports) from the World Bank and covering the period from 1998 to 2016. Also we use the data on international remittances sent and received from and to Spain in relation with these countries for the period 2010 to 2015, obtained from the World Bank.

In 2023, Brazil’s number one most exported product was soybean. This agricultural product contributed roughly ** billion U.S. dollars to the Brazilian total export value. At around **** billion dollars, crude petroleum oils and oils from bituminous minerals were the second-most exported product group in Brazil. It was followed by iron ore that made up approximately **** billion dollars of the exported value for this South American country. Brazil’s leading trade partners Brazil’s leading trade partners in 2023 were spread across four continents – North America, South America, Europe, and Asia. China was by far the main trade partner of Brazil, both in terms of import and export, exceeding a total trade value of 150 billion U.S. dollars. The distribution, however, was rather uneven, as the export value exceeded the import value significantly. In the case of the United States, this distribution was more balanced, as Brazil only imported slightly more than it exported. Except for Brazil’s economic recession in the mid-2010s, the total value of U.S. trade in goods with Brazil has remained strong and improved continuously over the last 20 years. Brazil’s trade balance and GDP When looking at the trade balance of goods in Brazil over the past decade, the South American country only registered a trade deficit (negative trade balance) in 2013 and 2014. The remaining years, albeit showing fluctuations, the nation generated a trade surplus (positive trade balance). In addition to a stable trade balance, Brazil is the country with the highest gross domestic product in Latin America and the Caribbean, further demonstrating its economic strength.

"Before discussing basic research needs in UCG , we need to address a still more fundamental question. Does the nation need a synfuel industry? The technical community in the energy field seems to agree almost universally that the nation does need such an industry. The prevailing opinion is that the United States is currently living in a ""fool's paradise."" Oil prices have dropped recently by as much a5 25% which is small compared to the 12 to 15 fold increase in cost since 1973 . A world wide recession has produced a small surplus in the oil export market, but that recession resulted in part from the rapid rise in the cost of energy. Economic recovery will quickly dry up the oil surplus. In the meantime, three separate , simultaneous wars in the Middle- East underline the precarious political balance in that area which produces about 50% of the exported oil. In essence, current conditions have given us only little extra time to complete the mammoth undertaking of developing available syn fuels industry. A second question: Even if synfuels are needed, does the nation need an UCG industry? UCG probably offers economic and some environmental advantages. UCG may be the only viable method for recovering coal energy from thick deep lying coal seams. But, for the near future, one advantage probably overrides all others. In times of national emergency, UCG can be developed more rapidly than any other synfuel industry. This fact may be important should the "" fool's paradise"" end too swiftly."

    Description

The Kyrgyz Republic has experienced modest and volatile economic expansion since the economy bottomed out from the transition recession in 1995, when GDP amounted to about half of its pre-independence levels. As a result of structural reforms at the start of transition, the emergence of remittances and commodity exports, largely gold, as powerful new drivers of growth, and improvements in the macroeconomic management in the recent decade, per-capita real GDP grew by 3.1 percent a year on average since 1995. The Kyrgyz Republic is now a lower middle-income economy, as it was in 1990. Economic expansion has benefitted from fixed investment that has risen to 31 percent of GDP, one of the highest in Europe and Central Asia and well-above the threshold of 25 percent reached by the group of successful countries studied by the Growth Commission in 2007. Lower fiscal deficits and low inflation indicate the success of recent macroeconomic policies. These achievements notwithstanding, Kyrgyz Republic’s growth and productivity performance has lagged most relevant comparators, frustrating the needs of the poor and the young. As a result, while per-capita GDP in constant prices has doubled since 1995, it has still not caught up with pre-independence levels. Per-capita incomes in the Kyrgyz Republic have increased by 20 percent less than the average of lower middle-income countries since 2000 and 40 percent less than the average for the Caucasus and Central Asia. Productivity increases – proxied by changes in total factor productivity, have averaged half a percent since 2000, leaving largely factor accumulation as the driver of economic growth. And while productivity isn’t everything, but in the long run it is almost everything, highlighting one of the main challenges of the country’s current growth model.3 Poverty has declined, but modest growth has made a modest dent, leaving the poverty rate as high as 31 percent, with a substantial part of the population living in regions with more limited and lower quality government services than in Bishkek.
