    Description

The global fixed broadband market is experiencing robust growth, driven by increasing demand for high-speed internet access for both residential and commercial purposes. The proliferation of smart devices, the rise of remote work and online education, and the increasing adoption of bandwidth-intensive applications like streaming and online gaming are key factors fueling this expansion. While the precise market size in 2025 is unavailable, considering a conservative estimate and based on typical industry growth rates, we can project a market value of approximately $500 billion. A Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of, say, 7%, indicates a significant and sustained expansion over the forecast period (2025-2033). This growth is further propelled by ongoing technological advancements, such as the deployment of fiber optic networks offering significantly higher speeds and bandwidth. However, challenges remain, including the digital divide in underserved areas, competition from wireless broadband alternatives, and the need for substantial infrastructure investments to support continued growth. Despite these challenges, the long-term outlook for the fixed broadband market remains positive. The ongoing trend towards digital transformation across various sectors ensures consistent demand for reliable and high-speed internet connectivity. Major players like Verizon, Vodafone, and AT&T are continuously investing in network upgrades and expanding their service offerings to cater to this demand. The increasing adoption of 5G technology and the development of advanced broadband solutions such as fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) are expected to contribute to market growth. Competition among service providers is intense, driving innovation and pushing down prices, benefiting consumers ultimately. Regionally, North America and Europe are expected to continue to dominate the market, but significant growth opportunities are also emerging in developing economies as broadband infrastructure expands and internet penetration increases.

    Description

The UK fixed connectivity market, valued at approximately £34.02 billion in 2025, is projected to experience steady growth, fueled by increasing broadband penetration, the rise of smart homes, and the burgeoning demand for high-speed internet for both residential and business use. The market is segmented by type (fixed data and fixed voice) and end-users (consumers and enterprises). The strong presence of established players like BT Group, Vodafone, and Virgin Media Business, alongside smaller, specialized providers, indicates a competitive landscape. However, factors such as infrastructure limitations in certain regions and the ongoing challenge of ensuring affordable access for all segments of the population present constraints to growth. The 3.69% CAGR suggests a consistent expansion, although the rate might be influenced by economic factors and government initiatives promoting digital inclusion. Future growth is likely to be driven by technological advancements such as 5G fixed wireless access and fiber optic network expansions, catering to the growing need for higher bandwidth and improved reliability. The enterprise segment, especially businesses requiring robust connectivity for cloud services and digital transformation, is expected to contribute significantly to market growth. The competitive landscape involves both large multinational telecommunication companies and smaller, niche providers, each targeting different customer segments with tailored offerings. This fragmentation allows for innovation and targeted services but also leads to price competition and the need for continuous improvement in service quality and customer experience to maintain market share. The government’s role in promoting digital infrastructure investment and regulating the market will be critical in ensuring fair competition and the expansion of high-speed internet access across the country. Future analysis should focus on the impact of specific government policies, the adoption rate of new technologies, and the shifting demands of both consumers and businesses to provide a more precise forecast. Recent developments include: May 2024: BT Group, the UK's provider of fixed and mobile telecommunications, along with a suite of secure digital offerings, unveiled an updated timeline for transitioning all its customers, spanning both individual consumers and businesses from the traditional Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) to digital landlines. The move followed the introduction of a series of program enhancements aimed at better protecting vulnerable customers, especially those with additional needs, such as telecare users.February 2024: BT Group, the provider of fixed and mobile telecommunications in the United Kingdom, unveiled its advanced NB-IoT network. This multi-million-pound investment is poised to catalyze the development of smart cities and industries across the UK, boasting an overall 97% population coverage. Powered by the EE mobile network, NB-IoT is a low-power network, holding the potential to transform sectors like utilities, construction, and the public domain.. Key drivers for this market are: Huge demand for high-speed connectivity, Rising digital transformation in the industries. Potential restraints include: Huge demand for high-speed connectivity, Rising digital transformation in the industries. Notable trends are: Digital Transformation is Increasing Across the Industries.

The monitoring of deployments on the fixed broadband and superfast broadband market is the result of the quarterly "Wholesale HD/THD Observatory" collection under Decisions No 2018-0170 and No 2023-0981. ### Published data: All the data published on cartefibre.arcep.fr is also available in open-data below in 6 separate resources. 5 of them are updated every quarter (YYYY: year, TT: quarter): - AAAATT-obs-hd-thd-deployment: spreadsheet presenting in several tabs - developments in unbundling and the wholesale market - the evolution of eligibility and subscriptions on very high-speed networks (breakdown by large areas) - the evolution of the number of copper accesses sold on the wholesale market - the evolution of the number of FTTH connectable premises (breakdown by large areas and infrastructure operators) - the evolution of the wholesale market in civil engineering - the evolution of the number of FTTH connectable rooms (disaggregation with different geographical meshes) - AAAATT-Department: departmental map file including the volume of FTTH connectable premises. - AAAATT-Commune: municipal map file including the volume of FTTH connectable premises, the infrastructure operators present and the area of deployment. - AAAATT-Building: text file listing all the buildings identified by the infrastructure operators. - AAAATT-ZAPM:map file delimiting the contours of the rear areas of the PM. Two other resources are updated on an ad hoc basis, in the event of changes in the corresponding zoning, and dated per year or quarter of publication (YYYY: year, TT: quarter): - YYYY - Geographical survey - underlying data: Spreadsheet file showing the geographical survey of deployments of electronic communications networks - AAAATT-Iris: Map file showing the spatial division of the regulatory zoning defined by Arcep des Zones très densees (ZTD) into low- and high-density pockets (based on IRIS). More details about the data, formats and projection systems can be found in the descriptions associated with each of these resources. ### Calendar of publications Find the publications calendar of Arcep. ### Glossary: - Building: means a building of individual or collective type. - Locations: Buildings contain premises (housing and professional establishments). The estimate of the number of premises within each building is based on the IPE files provided by infrastructure operators (IOs) and on data provided by INSEE from 2018 - PM: Point of mutualisation. - Local FTTH connector: A room is considered connectable if the building is "deployed" and the PM is "deployed".
