Historic Marine Protected Areas ‘Historic MPAs’ are designated under Section 67 of the Marine Scotland Act 2010 to protect marine historic assets (e.g historic shipwrecks) of national importance within Scottish territorial waters.
The Scottish Government is committed to clean, healthy, safe, productive, biologically diverse marine and coastal environments, managed to meet the long-term needs of people and nature. This includes protecting and, where appropriate, enhancing our most important historic wrecks and other marine heritage sites in such a way that they can be valued and understood. One way Scottish Ministers can achieve this is by designating nationally important marine historic assets in Scottish territorial waters as Historic Marine Protected Areas under the Marine (Scotland) Act 2010.
The data shows the boundaries of all Historic Marine Protected Areas in Scotland. You should refer to the Historic Marine Protected Area site documentation for exact locations of individual boundary points and supplementary information.

This LiDAR data was captured by Fugro for Historic Environment Scotland (HES) as part of the Scottish Ten Project - a project to survey in 3D, 5 of Scotland’s World Heritage Sites (WHS) and 5 international WHS – Only data relating to Scotland is catalogued here. LiDAR data was captured in 2010 and 2012 and processed in LAZ format to 0.5m resolution with a point density of 4 points per square metre.
Please Note: This data is not to be used for any commercial purpose as specified by the original supplier Fugro.
The sites:
1) Edinburgh Old and New Town (10 tiles: NT2374, NT2574, NT 2574, NT2674, NT2373, NT2473, NT2573, NT2673, NT2773, NT2572)
2) The Heart of Neolithic Orkney 2010 epoch (228 tiles: HY3010; ND2899) NB: a 2nd epoch of LiDAR data was captured of part of this same area in 2018 for HES
3) St Kilda 32 x 500m² tiles covering Hirta, Soay, Boreray and Levenish from the following 1km² tiles: NA0500, NA0501, NA0502, NA0600, NA0601, NA0602, NA0700, NA0701, NA0702, NA0800, NA0801, NA0900, NA1000, NA1404, NA1405, NA1504, NA1505, NA1506, NF0798, NF0799, NF0898, NF0899, NF0997, NF0998, NF0999, NF1097, NF1098, NF1099, NF1197, NF1198, NF1199, NF1396.
4) The Antonine Wall (84 tiles: NT0380; NS4573) NB: Additional area coverage was added from the same source tiles that had been captured by Fugro in 2010, in 2013, to complete coverage of a broader area of the Antonine Wall beyond the WHS
5) New Lanark (5 tiles: NS8743, NS8742, NS8842, NS8741, NS8841)
Data was originally supplied as XYZI Raw data in *.xyz (ASCII) format and 0.5m LAS data as Terrain and Surface data
This data is available on the Scottish Remote Sensing Portal as LAZ and GeoTiff (converted from the original supplied data)
A *.pdf of each area indicating the extent was supplied depicting the area captured in the dataset
Orthophotos were supplied alongside this data as *. Tif and include *.TFW files, these are held by Historic Environment Scotland and require different licencing than is covered by the data documentation referenced here.
This LiDAR data was captured by Fugro and procured by Historic Environment Scotland (HES) as part of the Rae Project, the 3D Digital Documentation of HES’ Properties in Care and for other HES projects. The LiDAR data was captured in 2016 and 2017 of the sites and their immediate landscape and processed in . ascii format to 0.25m resolution for the following sites: • Chesters Hill Fort. • Dere Street Roman Road – North and South • Blackness Castle. • Kinneil House. • Linlithgow Palace, Peel and Park. • Antonine Wall – Rough Castle (Antonine Wall 2017 epoch). • Antonine Wall – Watling Lodge West (Antonine Wall 2017 epoch*). • Caerlaverock Castle. • Dundonald Castle. • Lochmaben Castle. • Threave Castle. Data was supplied in *.las format and 0.25m *.ascii format as DTM (Terrain) and DSM (Surface) data and is distributed here as *.LAZ and GeoTiff Each site or data area is included in an attributed GIS shapefile depicting the area of each respective area of data capture Tiles contain only data that was relevant to HES Projects at the time of procurement.
This LiDAR data was captured by Bluesky International Limited for Historic Environment Scotland (HES) as part of the Rae Project, the 3D Digital Documentation of HES’ Properties in Care and for other HES projects.
