TwitterThe health risks of climate change need to be identified to inform the prioritization of adaptation efforts. This is particularly true within low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) with limited resources, heterogenous climates, and varying degrees of social vulnerability. In Kenya, diarrheal disease is one of the leading causes of death and identifying risk factors of diarrheal disease is critical. This research aims to characterize factors associated with a high risk of diarrheal disease in western Kenya by developing a risk index based on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) risk framework. We developed a conceptual model of risk factors based on prior research with risk factors grouped into the four components of the IPCC risk framework: hazard, exposure, and vulnerability (which is comprised of sensitivity and adaptive capacity). We obtained 30 data elements corresponding to the four components for 99 sub-counties in 14 western Kenya counties. We conducted principal component analysis (PCA) to develop a risk index for diarrheal disease. Our risk index aligns with epidemiological literature, including precipitation, temperature, water sanitation and hygiene (WASH), sensitive populations, education, poverty, and health facilities. Within counties, we found that the risk varied substantially, and a geographic cluster of high-risk sub-counties was identified. Our findings should be useful for policymakers and health officials in Kenya to prioritize efforts to prepare communities for health impacts of climate change. The process may be useful for standardizing approaches to assessing the risk of climate-sensitive health outcomes.

TwitterThis datasource includes a map of global relative humidity at a 10km resolution (resampled from 25km) at daytime. Data were taken from 'ERA5 hourly data on single levels from 1940 to present'. Relative humidity can be approximated as the ratio of water vapor pressure to saturation water vapour pressure. We utilise the August-Roche-Magnus formula to calculate these vapour pressures using temperature and dewpoint temperature, where dewpoint temperature is the temperature at which saturation water vapour pressure is reached. For daytime hours, we take the hours from 6am to 6pm.

TwitterBathymetry TIFF, Lake Victoria Bathymetry, raster, 2017 Reference Information and Units: Projected Coordinate System: Africa Lambert Conformal Conic ESRI:102024 (https://epsg.io/102024) Geographic Datum: D_WGS_1984 Pixel Size: 100 meters Units: Meters File Naming Convention: LV_Bathy_V7.tif Data Origin: The point data was obtained from an Admiral Bathymetry map and points collected in the field. In addition, we used points from other maps and acoustic sounding data. The final input point total is approximately 4,087,217. Of the total 4,087,217 points, 120,000 of them are clustered around three specific bays. Roughly, 3.8 million points come from the survey conducted by Lake Victoria Regional Hydro-acoustics Working Group and are along the boats path around the lake. Although updates are still occurring this product is no longer Beta in v3. More information regarding depth points can be found in the metadata of LV_Bathymetry_Points_V7. Data Development: This TIFF was created from running an Ordinary Kriging on points that were obtained from taking digitized points from an Admiral Bathymetry map and points collected in the field as well as from other maps. These points were combined into the same file and had their depths converted to the same unit (meters). All points that were outside of the Lake Victoria shoreline polygon were removed. The points that were marked as greater than the recorded depth were removed. See the point file for more point metadata. A cross-validation point dataset is provided in point format as well as various rendering files and the kriging settings file. Daily Solar Radiation Flux data were taken from 'Agrometeorological indicators from 1979 to present derived from reanalysis (AgEra5)' and summed over the year for each grid point to produce these maps. Units are in kWh/m2, i.e. how many kilowatt-hours of energy the sun irradiates for every square meter of area.
