The Greater Glasgow and Clyde health board has the highest amount of confirmed cases at 514,117, although this is also the most populated part of Scotland. The Lothian health board has 368,930 confirmed cases which contains Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland.
Situation in the rest of the UK Across the whole of the UK there have been 24,243,393 confirmed cases of coronavirus as of January 2023. Scotland currently has fewer cases than four regions in England. As of December 2023, the South East has the highest number of confirmed first-episode cases of the virus in the UK with 3,180,101 registered cases, while London and the North West have 2,947,7271 and 2,621,449 confirmed cases, respectively.
COVID deaths in the UK COVID-19 has so far been responsible for 202,157deaths in the UK as of January 13, 2023, and the UK has had the highest death toll from coronavirus in Western Europe. The incidence of deaths in the UK is 297.8 per 100,000 population.

This open data publication has moved to COVID-19 Statistical Data in Scotland (from 02/11/2022) Novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is a new strain of coronavirus first identified in Wuhan, China. Clinical presentation may range from mild-to-moderate illness to pneumonia or severe acute respiratory infection. This dataset provides information on demographic characteristics (age, sex, deprivation) of confirmed novel coronavirus (COVID-19) cases, as well as trend data regarding the wider impact of the virus on the healthcare system. Data includes information on primary care out of hours consultations, respiratory calls made to NHS24, contact with COVID-19 Hubs and Assessment Centres, incidents received by Scottish Ambulance Services (SAS), as well as COVID-19 related hospital admissions and admissions to ICU (Intensive Care Unit). Further data on the wider impact of the COVID-19 response, focusing on hospital admissions, unscheduled care and volume of calls to NHS24, is available on the COVID-19 Wider Impact Dashboard. There is a large amount of data being regularly published regarding COVID-19 (for example, Coronavirus in Scotland - Scottish Government and Deaths involving coronavirus in Scotland - National Records of Scotland. Following a trial run and official release on the 24th of September 2020, the NHS COVID-19 app has been downloaded more than 29 million times in England and Wales, as of December 2021. Developed to complement the NHS Test & Trace in England and the Test, Trace and Protect program in Wales, the app is aimed at increasing the speed and accuracy of contact tracing, and includes features such as local area alerts and venue check-in.
NHS COVID-19 app usage Between the beginning of June 2021 and the end of July 2021, the number of COVID-19 cases in the United Kingdom started rising again, reaching the peak of 54,674 on the 21st of July. In the previous week, it was reported that more than 600 thousand users of the NHS COVID-19 app in England and Wales had received a self-isolation alert or “ping,” causing what has been since renamed by the media as a “pingdemic.” The NHS COVID-19 app, which works using Bluetooth technology, registers the devices that the users have been in proximity of, and is programmed to send alerts to all the traced contacts in case the app users test positive for coronavirus. While the app’s tracing measurements are currently being reviewed to decrease the number of alerts sent, two in 10 users have reported switching off the app’s contact tracing function. Moreover, according to a survey of online users in Great Britain, only 22 percent of the online users who have the app are using it correctly, while one in ten reported deleting the app altogether.
Travel health pass and COVID-19 apps In 2021, the rolling out of vaccination plans worldwide prompted health institutions and travel companies to start releasing new apps or updating their current ones to function as health passports. With close to 5,7 million downloads in the first half of 2021, the NHS app was the most downloaded app used to show digital certifications. The CovPass app, which is available to residents in Germany, followed with more than 5.56 million downloads as of the second quarter of 2021. According to a February survey of travelers worldwide, the main concerns over the use of digital health passports related to security risks over personal data being hacked and privacy protection.

DECOVID, a multi-centre research consortium, was founded in March 2020 by two United Kingdom (UK) National Health Service (NHS) Foundation Trusts (comprising three acute care hospitals) and three research institutes/universities: University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB), University College London Hospitals (UCLH), University of Birmingham, University College London and The Alan Turing Institute. The original aim of DECOVID was to share harmonised electronic health record (EHR) data from UCLH and UHB to enable researchers affiliated with the DECOVID consortium to answer clinical questions to support the COVID-19 response. The DECOVID database has now been placed within the infrastructure of PIONEER, a Health Data Research (HDR) UK funded data hub that contains data from acute care providers, to make the DECOVID database accessible to external researchers not affiliated with the DECOVID consortium.
This highly granular dataset contains 256,804 spells and 165,414 hospitalised patients. The data includes demographics, serial physiological measurements, laboratory test results, medications, procedures, drugs, mortality and readmission.
Geography: UHB is one of the largest NHS Trusts in England, providing direct acute services & specialist care across four hospital sites, with 2.2 million patient episodes per year, 2750 beds & > 120 ITU bed capacity. UCLH provides first-class acute and specialist services in six hospitals in central London, seeing more than 1 million outpatient and 100,000 admissions per year. Both UHB and UCLH have fully electronic health records. Data has been harmonised using the OMOP data model. Data set availability: Data access is available via the PIONEER Hub for projects which will benefit the public or patients. This can be by developing a new understanding of disease, by providing insights into how to improve care, or by developing new models, tools, treatments, or care processes. Data access can be provided to NHS, academic, commercial, policy and third sector organisations. Applications from SMEs are welcome. This dataset was scraped from the API serving the NHS COVID-19 App for England and Wales, and the NHS COVID-19 test availability service.
It contains the following files:
exposure_keys.csv Metadata associated with the published exposure keys for the Bluetooth Google/Apple Exposure Notification (GAEN) system. The actual broadcast keys were not collected, only the metadata attached to them. The columns in the table match those in the exposure key export format, with the exception of the "export_date" field which is the "end_timestamp" of the key export in which that key was first seen. This file is believed to be complete between 2020-09-13 and 2023-04-29 when the NHS COVID-19 app was retired.
exposure_configuration.csv This table contains the NHS COVID-19 App's exposure configuration JSON file fetched from the API, with a new record inserted whenever this changed. History of this file is also available in the app's git repository, and entries in this file from before 2021-07-11 were imported from there. The timestamps for entries dated since that point will match the time that the configuration was published to the API, which may not be the case for the git repository as this was normally updated after a delay.
risky_venues.csv "Risky venue" notification data for the COVID-19 App. This was an NHS App-specific feature, not part of the GAEN specification, which allowed users to "check in" to a venue and receive a notification if they were present at the same time as someone who subsequently tested positive for COVID-19. This file is believed to be complete between 2020-09-24 and 2022-02-22 (when it appears the "risky venue" feature was retired), with a known data collection gap between 2021-08-03 and 2021-08-06.
walk_in_pcr_availability.csv Walk-in PCR test availability for the entire UK, used by the NHS PCR test booking service. This contains JSON objects provided by the API, which are broken down by region. A new row was inserted whenever this JSON object changed. This file is believed to be complete between 2021-12-27 and 2022-03-30 (after which it appears the online test booking service was retired).
home_test_availability.csv Home test (PCR or Lateral Flow Device) availability, for the public and for "key workers" who had priority ordering PCR tests. A new row was inserted whenever the availability changed. This file is believed to be complete between 2021-12-27 and 2022-08-22 when the data ended.

OMOP dataset: Hospital COVID patients: severity, acuity, therapies, outcomes Dataset number 2.0
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was identified in January 2020. Currently, there have been more than 6 million cases & more than 1.5 million deaths worldwide. Some individuals experience severe manifestations of infection, including viral pneumonia, adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) & death. There is a pressing need for tools to stratify patients, to identify those at greatest risk. Acuity scores are composite scores which help identify patients who are more unwell to support & prioritise clinical care. There are no validated acuity scores for COVID-19 & it is unclear whether standard tools are accurate enough to provide this support. This secondary care COVID OMOP dataset contains granular demographic, morbidity, serial acuity and outcome data to inform risk prediction tools in COVID-19.
PIONEER geography The West Midlands (WM) has a population of 5.9 million & includes a diverse ethnic & socio-economic mix. There is a higher than average percentage of minority ethnic groups. WM has a large number of elderly residents but is the youngest population in the UK. Each day >100,000 people are treated in hospital, see their GP or are cared for by the NHS. The West Midlands was one of the hardest hit regions for COVID admissions in both wave 1 & 2.
EHR. University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) is one of the largest NHS Trusts in England, providing direct acute services & specialist care across four hospital sites, with 2.2 million patient episodes per year, 2750 beds & 100 ITU beds. UHB runs a fully electronic healthcare record (EHR) (PICS; Birmingham Systems), a shared primary & secondary care record (Your Care Connected) & a patient portal “My Health”. UHB has cared for >5000 COVID admissions to date. This is a subset of data in OMOP format.
Scope: All COVID swab confirmed hospitalised patients to UHB from January – August 2020. The dataset includes highly granular patient demographics & co-morbidities taken from ICD-10 & SNOMED-CT codes. Serial, structured data pertaining to care process (timings, staff grades, specialty review, wards), presenting complaint, acuity, all physiology readings (pulse, blood pressure, respiratory rate, oxygen saturations), all blood results, microbiology, all prescribed & administered treatments (fluids, antibiotics, inotropes, vasopressors, organ support), all outcomes.

Contextual indicators on the number of provider spells which are related to COVID-19 and on the number of provider spells as a percentage of pre-pandemic activity (January 2019 – December 2019) are produced to support the interpretation of the SHMI. The number of spells as a percentage of pre-pandemic activity indicator is being published as an official statistic in development. Official statistics in development are published in order to involve users and stakeholders in their development and as a means to build in quality at an early stage. Notes: 1. There is a shortfall in the number of records for North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust (trust code RAP), Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (trust code RTF), The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust (trust code RFR), and The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (trust code RXW).
