This statistic shows the median age of the population in South Sudan from 1950 to 2100*.The median age is the age that divides a population into two numerically equal groups; that is, half the people are younger than this age and half are older. It is a single index that summarizes the age distribution of a population. In 2020, the median age of the population of South Sudan was 17 years.

WorldPop produces different types of gridded population count datasets, depending on the methods used and end application.

Tatem et al and
Pezzulo et al. Details of the input population count datasets used can be found here, and age/sex structure proportion datasets here.
Both top-down 'unconstrained' and 'constrained' versions of the datasets are available, and the differences between the two methods are outlined
here. The datasets represent the outputs from a project focused on construction of consistent 100m resolution population count datasets for all countries of the World structured by male/female and 5-year age classes (plus a <1 year class). These efforts necessarily involved some shortcuts for consistency. The unconstrained datasets are available for each year from 2000 to 2020.
The constrained datasets are only available for 2020 at present, given the time periods represented by the building footprint and built settlement datasets used in the mapping.
Data for earlier dates is available directly from WorldPop.

This data release includes gridded estimates of population sizes at approximately 100 m resolution with national coverage across South Sudan. This includes estimates of total population sizes and population counts in 40 different age-sex groups. It also includes a breakdown of the total population sizes into internally displaced persons (IDPs) and non-IDPs. These results were produced using publicly available census projections from the South Sudan National Bureau of Statistics and displacement data from the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), as well as building footprints from Maxar/Ecopia that were derived from recent satellite imagery.

The statistic shows the adult mortality rate in South Sudan from 2012 to 2022, by gender. According to the source, the adult mortality rate is the probability of dying between the ages of 15 and 60 - that is, the probability of a 15-year-old dying before reaching age 60, if subject to age-specific mortality rates of the specified year between those ages. In 2022, the mortality rate for women was at 311.5 per 1,000 female adults, while the mortality rate for men was at 373.92 per 1,000 male adults in South Sudan.
