    Description

In 2023, people from 30 to 39 years of age made up the largest age group in Sweden. There were nearly 1.5 million people who belonged to this age group. People aged 50 to 59 years made up the second largest age group in Sweden, followed by people between 40 and 49 years. Moreover, there were nearly 1.2 million children between zero and nine, and 3,000 people aged 100 years or more.

    Increasing population

Since 2000, the Swedish population increased steadily. This is mainly explained by the country's positive migration flow, but also that more people are being born than people dying.

    Decreasing fertility rate

Even though the Swedish population increased steadily during this century, the country's fertility rate decreased steadily since 2010. In 2023, the number of babies born reached a record low. In Europe, however, Sweden's fertility rate is higher than the average.

To measure the three variables, namely (a) Population (Male), (b) Population (Female), and (c) Gender Ratio (Males per 100 Females), we initially analyzed and categorized the data for each of the gender classifications (biological sex) reported by the US Census Bureau across 18 age groups, ranging from under 5 years to 85 years and above. These age groups are described above in the variables section. For further information regarding these estimates, please feel free to reach out to us via email at research@neilsberg.com.

    Description

In Sweden, the share of elderly of the total population has increased since 1970. Whereas people aged 65 years or more made up below 14 percent of the population in 1970, they made up over 20 percent of the population in 2023. In total, the population in Sweden increased steadily over the past decade and amounted to 10.55 million in 2023.

    Aging population

As the average life expectancy at birth in Sweden increased over the past decade, meaning that people live longer, and the birth rate decreased during the same period, the average age of Swedes reached almost 42 years in 2022.

Aging population means smaller labor force

The aging population brings future challenges for the Swedish society. The increasing number of elderly needs care, but simultaneously, there will be fewer people at working age to take care of the elderly. At the same time, there will be fewer people available for other jobs as more people retire. By 2030, it is estimated that the share of the labor force aged 64 years or more will increase by two percent.

    Description
    About this dataset

    Context

The dataset tabulates the data for the New Sweden, Maine population pyramid, which represents the New Sweden town population distribution across age and gender, using estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates. It lists the male and female population for each age group, along with the total population for those age groups. Higher numbers at the bottom of the table suggest population growth, whereas higher numbers at the top indicate declining birth rates. Furthermore, the dataset can be utilized to understand the youth dependency ratio, old-age dependency ratio, total dependency ratio, and potential support ratio.

    Key observations

    • Youth dependency ratio, which is the number of children aged 0-14 per 100 persons aged 15-64, for New Sweden, Maine, is 32.9.
    • Old-age dependency ratio, which is the number of persons aged 65 or over per 100 persons aged 15-64, for New Sweden, Maine, is 47.9.
    • Total dependency ratio for New Sweden, Maine is 80.8.

    Measurement technique
The data presented in this dataset is derived from the latest U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2018-2022 5-Year Estimates. To measure the three variables, namely (a) male population, (b) female population and (b) total population, we initially analyzed and categorized the data for each of the age groups. For age groups we divided it into roughly a 5 year bucket for ages between 0 and 85. For over 85, we aggregated data into a single group for all ages. Description
    About this dataset

    Context

The dataset tabulates the data for the Sweden, New York population pyramid, which represents the Sweden town population distribution across age and gender, using estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2018-2022 5-Year Estimates.

    • Youth dependency ratio, which is the number of children aged 0-14 per 100 persons aged 15-64, for Sweden, New York, is 16.9.
    • Old-age dependency ratio, which is the number of persons aged 65 or over per 100 persons aged 15-64, for Sweden, New York, is 18.2.
    • Total dependency ratio for Sweden, New York is 35.1.
    • Potential support ratio, which is the number of youth (working age population) per elderly, for Sweden, New York is 5.5.
