    In February 2025, Sweden had around 3.3 million TikTok users, while Norway was home to approximately 1.71 million TikTok users. Denmark and Iceland had 1.37 and 0.14 million TikTok users, respectively. TikTok is a video sharing social app launched in 2017 and is owned by the Beijing-based tech company ByteDance.

    TikTok demographics and engagement TikTok user base across Nordic markets is equally distributed across male and female users alike. However, Denmark registered the highest proportion of female users in the region, approximately 52 percent. The social video app's appeal varies significantly across age groups, with young users and Gen Z responding very positively to the appeal of TikTok short video format. A 2023 survey conducted in Sweden revealed that 66 percent of internet users aged 15-24 engaged with TikTok daily, compared to only 15 percent of users aged 25-44. Similarly, over half of internet users aged between 15 and 19 accessed TikTok daily in Denmark, while engagement among users aged between 20 and 24 interested approximately one-third of the demographic group.

    YouTube use and demographics in the Nordics Despite its increasing popularity, TikTok still trails behind YouTube when it comes to viewership. As of January 2024, Sweden had approximately 8.5 million YouTube users, nearly 2.5 times its TikTok user count. Norway and Finland each had around 4.5 million YouTube users, significantly outpacing their respective TikTok audiences. As in the case of TikTok, YouTube's user base in the Nordics is evenly split between men and women engaging with the video platform. Additionally, YouTube popularity was not restricted to the younger segments of Swedish demographic groups, as over six in 10 Swedish internet users were reported engaging with YouTube daily.

    Description

    We used TikTok’s built-in account analytics to download and record video and account metrics for the period between 10/8/2021 and 2/6/2022. We collected the following summary data for each individual video: video views, likes, comments, shares, total cumulative play time, average duration the video was watched, percentage of viewers who watched the full video, unique reached audience, and the percentage of video views by section (For You, personal profile, Following, hashtags).
    We evaluated the “success” of videos based on reach and engagement metrics, as well as viewer retention (how long a video is watched). We used metrics of reach (number of unique users the video was seen by) and engagement (likes, comments, and shares) to calculate the engagement rate of each video. The engagement rate is calculated as the engagement parameter as a percentage of total reach (e.g., Likes / Audience Reached *100).

As happened in the past with other platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, various media are currently seeking ways to adapt to TikTok and its particular characteristics to attract a younger audience less accustomed to the consumption of journalistic material. Against this background, the aim of this study is to identify the presence of the media and journalists on TikTok, measure the virality and engagement of the content they generate, describe the communities created around them, and identify the presence of journalistic use of these accounts. For this, 23,174 videos from 143 accounts belonging to media from 25 countries were analyzed. The results indicate that, in general, the presence and impact of the media in this social network are low and that most of their content is oriented towards the creation of user communities based on viral content and entertainment. However, albeit with a lesser presence, one can also identify accounts and messages that adapt their content to the specific characteristics of TikTok. Their virality and engagement figures illustrate that there is indeed a niche for current affairs on this social network.

    Description

    Background: COVID-related misinformation is prevalent online, including on social media. The purpose of this study was to explore factors associated with user engagement with COVID-related misinformation on the social media platform, TikTok. Methods: A sample of TikTok videos associated with the hashtag #coronavirus were downloaded on September 20, 2020. Misinformation was evaluated on a scale (low, medium, high) using a codebook developed by experts in infectious diseases. Multivariable modeling was used to evaluate factors associated with number of views and presence of user comments indicating intention to change behavior. Results: 166 TikTok videos were identified. Moderate misinformation was present in 36 (22%) videos, and high-level misinformation was present in 11 (7%). After controlling for characteristics and content, videos containing moderate misinformation were less likely to generate a user response indicating intended behavior change. By contrast, videos containing high-level misinformation were less likely to be viewed but demonstrated a non-significant trend towards higher engagement among viewers. Conclusions: COVID-related misinformation is less frequently viewed on TikTok but more likely to engage viewers. Public health authorities can combat misinformation on social media by posting content of their own.
