    Description

With a market capitalization of 3.12 trillion U.S. dollars as of May 2024, Microsoft was the world’s largest company that year. Rounding out the top five were some of the world’s most recognizable brands: Apple, NVIDIA, Google’s parent company Alphabet, and Amazon. Saudi Aramco led the ranking of the world's most profitable companies in 2023, with a pre-tax income of nearly 250 billion U.S. dollars. How are market value and market capitalization determined? Market value and market capitalization are two terms frequently used – and confused - when discussing the profitability and viability of companies. Strictly speaking, market capitalization (or market cap) is the worth of a company based on the total value of all their shares; an important metric when determining the comparative value of companies for trading opportunities. Accordingly, many stock exchanges such as the New York or London Stock Exchange release market capitalization data on their listed companies. On the other hand, market value technically refers to what a company is worth in a much broader context. It is determined by multiple factors, including profitability, corporate debt, and the market environment as a whole. In this sense it aims to estimate the overall value of a company, with share price only being one element. Market value is therefore useful for determining whether a company’s shares are over- or undervalued, and in arriving at a price if the company is to be sold. Such valuations are generally made on a case-by-case basis though, and not regularly reported. For this reason, market capitalization is often reported as market value. What are the top companies in the world? The answer to this question depends on the metric used. Although the largest company by market capitalization, Microsoft's global revenue did not manage to crack the top 20 companies. Rather, American multinational retailer Walmart was ranked as the largest company in the world by revenue. Walmart also had the highest number of employees in the world.

    Description

The Multinational Enterprise Study (also called the “Multinational Project” and the “Multinational Enterprise and the Nation State Project”) led by Raymond Vernon from 1965 to 1973 gathered data on the development of more than 35,000 foreign subsidiaries of the world’s largest manufacturing enterprises. The data was collected in two stages. From 1965 through 1969, data was gathered on approximately 10,000 foreign subsidiaries of 187 of the largest U.S.-based manufacturing enterprises tracing subsidiaries from 1900 until January 1, 1968. From 1971 through 1973, data was gathered on more than 15,000 foreign subsidiaries of 226 of the largest manufacturing enterprises based outside the United States tracing subsidiaries from 1900 until January 1, 1971. Per agreement with companies, individual parent company names have been redacted from the study data. Use of this data in the past has been primarily through its published form in Joan P. Curhan, William H. Davidson, and Rajan Suri, Tracing the Multinationals: A Sourcebook on U.S.-based Enterprises (Cambridge, Mass.: Ballinger, 1977), James W. Vaupel and Joan P. Curhan, The Making of Multinational Enterprises: A Sourcebook of Tables Based on a Study of 187 Major U.S. Manufacturing Corporations (Boston: Division of Research, Harvard Business School, 1969), and James W. Vaupel and Joan P. Curhan, The World’s Multinational Enterprises: A Sourcebook of Tables Based on a Study of the Largest U.S. and Non-U.S. Manufacturing Corporations (Boston: Division of Research, Harvard Business School, 1973). The bulk of the data was gathered from public records (official reports to the SEC, annual reports to stockholders, business histories, business periodicals, etc.). This data was supplemented with interviews with most of the parent companies.

    Description

In 2024, tech companies ranked as the most valuable brands in the world, covering the five top spots in the source’s ranking. Apple led the list with a brand value of nearly 489 billion U.S. dollars, followed by Microsoft, Amazon, and Google – each with brand values of over 290 billion dollars. Samsung closed the top five, at over 100 billion dollars in brand value. Big techs are also huge in terms of market value The source determined brand value by combining financial information, the role the brand plays in determining consumer choice (independent of other factors such as price and convenience), and a qualitative assessment of the brand’s overall strength. Considering only financial data, Apple, Amazon, Alphabet (Google’s parent company) and Microsoft would be still on the top, as they have some of the highest global market capitalizations. However, when considering only qualitative factors regarding brand strength, the list would look very different, with Chinese app WeChat being the strongest brand worldwide in 2024. Brand value vs. profitability Brand value does not always translate into profitability. While Apple also happens to be the second most profitable company in the world, other companies with strong brands such as Google and Amazon rank lower in terms of net income. This phenomenon does not only apply to tech companies – Coca-Cola did not feature on the list of the most profitable companies worldwide. This is likely due to their franchised distribution structure, whereby manufacturing operations are handled by separate companies, each of which operates independently with an exclusive license to manufacture Coca-Cola beverages in their territory.

    Description

Veridion’s Corporate Linkage data product offers a comprehensive, dynamic, and scalable view of inter-company relationships across the globe. It goes beyond traditional registry data by leveraging a blend of legal records and digital footprint intelligence to map corporate structures, operational affiliations, and brand ecosystems. The result is a robust and nuanced corporate family tree that reflects both legal ownership and real-world business activity.

This data product enables organizations to understand who owns whom, how entities are connected, and what operational or financial relationships exist between them. Veridion’s proprietary models and heuristics help fill the gaps left by traditional data vendors, providing linkage across borders, industries, and data silos. Veridion combines two foundational sources of entity data:

    1. Legal View Linkage
    2. Derived from government and state registries
    3. Based on filings, corporate identifiers, registration hierarchies
    4. Connects entities across jurisdictions using legal documentation
    5. Captures official parent-subsidiary relationships

    6. Digital View Linkage

    7. Derived from online sources such as: --- Corporate websites --- Press releases and M&A news --- Social media --- Product and brand domains

    8. Uses machine learning models to infer relationships not visible in registry data (e.g., franchises, digital brands, shell companies)

    9. Enables detection of affiliate groups, franchise networks, and joint ventures

By merging these two views, Veridion creates a hybrid model that recognizes both formal and informal relationships—tracking operational realities that are often overlooked in purely legal datasets.

Key Components of Veridion Corporate Linkage: - Ultimate Parent: Identifies the top-most entity in the ownership chain. - Direct Parent/Subsidiary: Documents immediate ownership relationships. - Affiliate Groups: Includes brands, franchises, JVs, and operational relationships beyond legal ownership. - Digital Entity–Legal Entity Mapping: Resolves differences between an operational business and its legal counterpart. - Cross-Border Linkages: Connects global corporate structures that span multiple jurisdictions. - Ownership Classification: Identifies if an entity is PE-backed, state-owned, or family-owned. - Confidence Scores: Indicates the strength and reliability of inferred connections. - Source Traceability: Shows the provenance of the relationship (e.g., website, registry, press article).

Weekly updates from both registry and online sources to maintain real-time relevance.

Key Use Cases by Industry: - Financial Services: KYC, AML & Credit Risk --- Corporate Beneficiary Mapping: Identify UBOs (Ultimate Beneficial Owners) in complex entity structures for regulatory compliance. --- Exposure Analysis: Aggregate credit risk across all subsidiaries of a borrower group. --- Sanctions Screening: Surface hidden affiliations with sanctioned or high-risk entities.

    • Procurement & Supply Chain --- Supplier Consolidation: Roll up entities to their corporate parents for unified supplier management and spend analysis. --- Third-Party Risk Management: Detect indirect exposure to high-risk or sanctioned groups. --- Sourcing Diversification: Uncover affiliate suppliers under the same ownership, aiding supply chain resilience planning.

    • Insurance --- Group Risk Aggregation: Evaluate exposure at the group level for policy underwriting. --- Business Classification Correction: Link smaller operations to parent companies with more accurate or complete industry codes. --- Portfolio Cleansing: Detect duplicate or fragmented records of the same business group.

    • Market Intelligence & Strategy --- Competitive Mapping: Understand the full ecosystem of a rival firm, including its brands, subsidiaries, and acquisitions. --- M&A Target Analysis: Map the full breadth of an acquisition target’s footprint, including hidden JVs or inactive brands. --- Expansion Intelligence: Spot affiliated companies operating in new or adjacent markets.

    • ESG & Sustainability --- Group-Level Emissions Tracking: Aggregate Scope 1–3 data across subsidiaries for a holistic ESG profile. --- Regulatory Compliance: Meet obligations under CSRD, CS3D, and other global ESG directives that require parent-subsidiary disclosure. --- Greenwashing Detection: Assess if a “green” brand is tied to a parent company with negative ESG signals.

Practical Examples: A global bank is evaluating a loan for a logistics firm. Using Veridion’s linkage data, they discover the borrower is a subsidiary of a conglomerate flagged for environmental violations in another jurisdiction.

A multinational insurer uses the data to identify all subsidiaries of a newly acquired firm. They adjust underwriting models to reflect the true scope of the risk and eliminate misclassified entities.

A procurement director relies on Veridion’s linkage engine to consolidate s...

    Description

As of March 2025, there were a reported 5,426 data centers in the United States, the most of any country worldwide. A further 529 were located in Germany, while 523 were located in the United Kingdom. What is a data center? A data center is a network of computing and storage resources that enables the delivery of shared software applications and data. These facilities can house large amounts of critical and important data, and therefore are vital to the daily functions of companies and consumers alike. As a result, whether it is a cloud, colocation, or managed service, data center real estate will have increasing importance worldwide. Hyperscale data centers In the past, data centers were highly controlled physical infrastructures, but the cloud has since changed that model. A cloud data service is a remote version of a data center – located somewhere away from a company's physical premises. Cloud IT infrastructure spending has grown and is forecast to rise further in the coming years. The evolution of technology, along with the rapid growth in demand for data across the globe, is largely driven by the leading hyperscale data center providers.
