    Description

    This dataset contains statistics for deaths and mortality in Australia. It includes all deaths that occurred and were registered in Australia, including deaths of persons whose place of usual residence was overseas. Deaths of Australian residents that occurred outside Australia may be registered by individual Registrars, but are not included in Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) death statistics.

    Standardised death rates in this dataset differ from those in the ABS.Stat datasets and commentary. Standardised death rates in this dataset are averaged using data for the three years ending in the reference year. They are calculated for each calendar year and then averaged. Standardised death rates in the ABS.Stat datasets and commentary are based on death registration data for the reference year only. Null values represent data not available for publication

    This dataset uses deaths and estimated resident population (ERP) for Local Government Areas (LGA) of Australia for 30 June 2012 to 2020, according to the 2020 edition of the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS). ERP is final for 2012 to 2016, revised for 2017 to 2019 and preliminary for 2020, based on the 2016 Census of Population and Housing. Data has been sourced from the September 2021 release.

    AURIN has spatially enabled the original data from the ABS with the 2020 LGA boundaries. The original dataset was shipped from the ABS with incorrect codes (LGA19 instead of LGA20). AURIN has modified these codes to reflect the correct LGA 2020 aggregation.

It is based on the assumption that this group is subject to the age-specific mortality rates of the reference period. Typically this hypothetical group is 100,000 persons in size.

    This dataset presents the footprint of statistics related to deaths due to all causes (combined) by sex. The data are maintained by the AIHW in the National Mortality Database.

    • Year refers to the year of registration of death. Deaths registered in 2013 and earlier are based on the final version of the cause of death data; deaths registered in 2014 are based on revised version; deaths registered in 2015 and 2016 are based on preliminary versions. Revised and preliminary versions are subject to further revision by the ABS.

    • Cause of death information are based on the underlying cause of death and are classified according to the International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD). Deaths registered in 1997 onwards are classified according to the 10th revision (ICD-10).

    • Unknown/missing includes deaths where place of usual residence was overseas, no fixed abode, offshore and migratory, and undefined. Summary measures and cause of death data are not presented for any LGA with less than 10 deaths in a single year.

    • Population counts are based on estimated resident populations at 30 June for each year. Australian estimated resident population data are sourced from Australian demographic statistics (ABS cat. no. 3101.0).

    This dataset, released July 2018, contains Deaths of males aged 0 to 74 years, 2011 to 2015; Deaths of females aged 0 to 74 years, 2011 to 2015; Total deaths, 0 to 74 years, 2011 to 2015. The data is by Population Health Area (PHA) 2016 geographic boundaries based on the 2016 Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS).

    Population Health Areas, developed by PHIDU, are comprised of a combination of whole SA2s and multiple (aggregates of) SA2s, where the SA2 is an area in the ABS structure.

    This dataset presents the footprint of male cancer mortality statistics in Australia for all cancers combined and the 11 top cancer groupings (bladder, colorectal, head and neck, kidney, leukaemia, lung, lymphoma, melanoma of the skin, pancreas, prostate and stomach) and their respective ICD-10 codes. The data spans the years 2009-2013 and is aggregated to 2015 Department of Health Primary Health Network (PHN) areas, based on the 2011 Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS).

    Mortality data refer to the number of deaths due to cancer in a given time period. Cancer deaths data are sourced from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) 2013 National Mortality Database (NMD).

    • AURIN has spatially enabled the original data using the Department of Health - PHN Areas.

    • Due to changes in geographic classifications over time, long-term trends are not available.

    • Values assigned to "n.p." in the original data have been removed from the data.

    • The Australian and jurisdictional totals include people who could not be assigned a PHN. The number of people who could not be assigned a PHN is less than 1% of the total.

    Description

    Standardised death rate per 100,000 persons for cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, diabetes and cancer.

    Cardiovascular Disease: In 2019, cardiovascular disease accounted for 43,249 deaths which was 25.5% of all deaths. Of these, there were 21,849 deaths for males and 21,400 deaths for females1.

    Cancer: The ABS advises that in 2019, the leading cause of death was Ischaemic heart disease (18,244 deaths), accounting for 10.8% of all deaths1. However, deaths from all cancers (neoplasms) combined accounted for 29.5% (49,967deaths) 1.

    Diabetes: In 2019, diabetes was Australia's seventh leading cause of death, accounting for 2.9% of all deaths. There were 4,967 deaths from diabetes, comprising 2,731 deaths for males and 2,236 deaths for females1.

    Respiratory Disease: In 2019, respiratory disease accounted for 16,275 deaths, representing 9.6% of all deaths. Of these, there were 8,145 deaths for males and 8,130 deaths for females1.

    Total deaths between ages 30 and 69: In 2019, there were 25,181 deaths from non-communicable diseases for persons aged between 30 and 69. This comprised of 15,133 deaths for males and 10,048 deaths for females.

    Dataset and data visualization details: These data were posted on October 21, 2022, archived on November 18, 2022, and revised on February 22, 2023. These data reflect cases among persons with a positive specimen collection date through September 24, 2022, and deaths among persons with a positive specimen collection date through September 3, 2022.

    Vaccination status: A person vaccinated with a primary series had SARS-CoV-2 RNA or antigen detected on a respiratory specimen collected ≥14 days after verifiably completing the primary series of an FDA-authorized or approved COVID-19 vaccine. An unvaccinated person had SARS-CoV-2 RNA or antigen detected on a respiratory specimen and has not been verified to have received COVID-19 vaccine. Excluded were partially vaccinated people who received at least one FDA-authorized vaccine dose but did not complete a primary series ≥14 days before collection of a specimen where SARS-CoV-2 RNA or antigen was detected. Additional or booster dose: A person vaccinated with a primary series and an additional or booster dose had SARS-CoV-2 RNA or antigen detected on a respiratory specimen collected ≥14 days after receipt of an additional or booster dose of any COVID-19 vaccine on or after August 13, 2021. For people ages 18 years and older, data are graphed starting the week including September 24, 2021, when a COVID-19 booster dose was first recommended by CDC for adults 65+ years old and people in certain populations and high risk occupational and institutional settings. For people ages 12-17 years, data are graphed starting the week of December 26, 2021, 2 weeks after the first recommendation for a booster dose for adolescents ages 16-17 years. For people ages 5-11 years, data are included starting the week of June 5, 2022, 2 weeks after the first recommendation for a booster dose for children aged 5-11 years. For people ages 50 years and older, data on second booster doses are graphed starting the week including March 29, 2022, when the recommendation was made for second boosters. Vertical lines represent dates when changes occurred in U.S. policy for COVID-19 vaccination (details provided above). Reporting is by primary series vaccine type rather than additional or booster dose vaccine type. The booster dose vaccine type may be different than the primary series vaccine type. ** Because data on the immune status of cases and associated deaths are unavailable, an additional dose in an immunocompromised person cannot be distinguished from a booster dose. This is a relevant consideration because vaccines can be less effective in this group. Deaths: A COVID-19–associated death occurred in a person with a documented COVID-19 diagnosis who died; health department staff reviewed to make a determination using vital records, public health investigation, or other data sources. Rates of COVID-19 deaths by vaccination status are reported based on when the patient was tested for COVID-19, not the date they died. Deaths usually occur up to 30 days after COVID-19 diagnosis. Participating jurisdictions: Currently, these 31 health departments that regularly link their case surveillance to immunization information system data are included in these incidence rate estimates: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, New York City (New York), North Carolina, Philadelphia (Pennsylvania), Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington, and West Virginia; 30 jurisdictions also report deaths among vaccinated and unvaccinated people. These jurisdictions represent 72% of the total U.S. population and all ten of the Health and Human Services Regions. Data on cases among people who received additional or booster doses were reported from 31 jurisdictions; 30 jurisdictions also reported data on deaths among people who received one or more additional or booster dose; 28 jurisdictions reported cases among people who received two or more additional or booster doses; and 26 jurisdictions reported deaths among people who received two or more additional or booster doses. This list will be updated as more jurisdictions participate. Incidence rate estimates: Weekly age-specific incidence rates by vaccination status were calculated as the number of cases or deaths divided by the number of people vaccinated with a primary series, overall or with/without a booster dose (cumulative) or unvaccinated (obtained by subtracting the cumulative number of people vaccinated with a primary series and partially vaccinated people from the 2019 U.S. intercensal population estimates) and multiplied by 100,000. Overall incidence rates were age-standardized using the 2000 U.S. Census standard population. To estimate population counts for ages 6 months through 1 year, half of the single-year population counts for ages 0 through 1 year were used. All rates are plotted by positive specimen collection date to reflect when incident infections occurred. For the primary series analysis, age-standardized rates include ages 12 years and older from April 4, 2021 through December 4, 2021, ages 5 years and older from December 5, 2021 through July 30, 2022 and ages 6 months and older from July 31, 2022 onwards. For the booster dose analysis, age-standardized rates include ages 18 years and older from September 19, 2021 through December 25, 2021, ages 12 years and older from December 26, 2021, and ages 5 years and older from June 5, 2022 onwards. Small numbers could contribute to less precision when calculating death rates among some groups. Continuity correction: A continuity correction has been applied to the denominators by capping the percent population coverage at 95%. To do this, we assumed that at least 5% of each age group would always be unvaccinated in each jurisdiction. Adding this correction ensures that there is always a reasonable denominator for the unvaccinated population that would prevent incidence and death rates from growing unrealistically large due to potential overestimates of vaccination coverage. Incidence rate ratios (IRRs): IRRs for the past one month were calculated by dividing the average weekly incidence rates among unvaccinated people by that among people vaccinated with a primary series either overall or with a booster dose.     The number of potentially avoidable deaths and their cause at age 0 to 74 years with corresponding mortality rates/ratios with respective confidence intervals, 2010 - 2014. The specified causes of death are: cancers, colorectal cancer, breast cancer, circulatory system diseases, ischaemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, respiratory system diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, deaths from select external causes of mortality, suicide and self-inflicted injuries, other external causes of mortality, transport accidents. (all entries that were classified as not shown, not published or not applicable were assigned a null value; no data was provided for Maralinga Tjarutja LGA, in South Australia). Description

This dataset contains statistics for deaths and mortality in Australia. It includes all deaths that occurred and were registered in Australia, including deaths of persons whose place of usual residence was overseas. Deaths of Australian residents that occurred outside Australia may be registered by individual Registrars, but are not included in Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) death statistics.

Standardised death rates in this dataset differ from those in the ABS.Stat datasets and commentary. Standardised death rates in this dataset are averaged using data for the three years ending in the reference year. They are calculated for each calendar year and then averaged. Standardised death rates in the ABS.Stat datasets and commentary are based on death registration data for the reference year only. Null values represent data not available for publication

This dataset uses deaths and estimated resident population (ERP) for Local Government Areas (LGA) of Australia for 30 June 2012 to 2020, according to the 2020 edition of the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS). ERP is final for 2012 to 2016, revised for 2017 to 2019 and preliminary for 2020, based on the 2016 Census of Population and Housing. Data has been sourced from the September 2021 release.

AURIN has spatially enabled the original data from the ABS with the 2020 LGA boundaries. The original dataset was shipped from the ABS with incorrect codes (LGA19 instead of LGA20). AURIN has modified these codes to reflect the correct LGA 2020 aggregation.
