    Description

    Abstract

This dataset and its metadata statement were supplied to the Bioregional Assessment Programme by a third party and are presented here as originally supplied.

This product, Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) Volume 1 - Main Structure and Greater Capital City Statistical Areas (cat no. 1270.0.55.001), is the first in a series of Volumes that will detail the various structures and regions of the ASGS. Its purpose is to outline the conceptual basis of the regions of the Main Structure and the Greater Capital City Statistical Areas and their relationship to each other.

Volume 2 - Indigenous Structure (cat no. 1270.0.55.002), is the second in a series of Volumes that detail the various structures and regions of the ASGS. Its purpose is to outline the conceptual basis for the design of the Indigenous Structure. This product contains several elements including the manual, region names and codes and the digital boundaries.

The Non-ABS Structures bring together those regions which are not defined by the ABS, but which are important to users of ABS statistics. ABS is committed to providing a range of statistics for these areas. They generally represent administrative regions and are approximated by Mesh Blocks (MBs), Statistical Areas Level 1 (SA1) or Statistical Areas Level 2 (SA2). As the Non-ABS Structures represent regions that are subject to ongoing change, the ABS will release a revised publication for ASGS Non-ABS Structures in July each year. The individual structures will only be updated where significant change has occurred in the past year.

Full metadata is available at the feature class level by selecting the 'Description' tab in ArcCatalog.

    This dataset contains three Geodatabases:

    1. ABS Boundaries 2011

    Feature Classes:

    a) Greater Capital City Statistical Area polygons for Australia - GCCSA_2011_AUST

    d) State Borders for Australia polygons - STE_2011_AUST

    1. Indigenous Structures 2011

    Feature Classes:

    a) Indigenous Areas - Polygons

    b) Indigenous Locations - Polygons

    c) Indigenous Regions - Polygons

    1. Non ABS Boundaries 2011

    Feature Classes

    a) Australian Drainage Divisions

    b) Commonwealth Electoral Divisions

    c) Local Government Areas

    d) Postal Areas

    e) State Electoral Boundaries

    f) State Suburb Code

    g) Tourism Regions

    Dataset History

The Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) is a hierarchical classification system of geographical regions and consists of a number of interrelated structures. The ASGS brings all the regions for which the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) publishes statistics within the one framework and will be used by the ABS for the collection and dissemination of geographically classified statistics from the 1 July 2011. It provides a common framework of statistical geography and enables the production of statistics which are comparable and can be spatially integrated.

    Description

This dataset is the Tourism Regions (TR) boundaries as defined by the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS): Volume 3 - Non ABS Structures, July 2016. For the original data and more information, refer to the Australian Bureau of Statistics' Issue. The ABS encourages the use of the ASGS by other organisations to improve the comparability and usefulness of statistics generally, and in analysis and visualisation of statistical and other data. The Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) brings together in one framework all of the regions which the ABS and many others organisations use to collect, release and analyse geographically classified statistics. The ASGS ensures that these statistics are comparable and geospatially integrated and provides users with an coherent set of standard regions so that they can access, visualise, analyse and understand statistics.

    Description

    Local Government Areas (LGA)

Local Government Areas (LGAs) represent local government boundaries that are defined by each State and Territory. LGAs are useful for understanding the characteristics of an individual local council area at a point in time.

LGAs are also known as Incorporated areas where incorporated local governing bodies have responsibilities (e.g. your local council). Not all areas of Australia are incorporated areas for example, northern parts of South Australia, all of the Australian Capital Territory and some Other Territories. These regions are defined as ‘Unincorporated’ in the ABS LGA structure.

LGAs are built from Mesh Blocks.

Annual reviews of LGAs are conducted and new boundaries are released if changes are identified. For information on these changes see ASGS Edition 3 – LGAs, history of changes. In TableBuilder, LGA boundaries will be updated if there have been changes. There were minor 2023 changes, however, as there were no changes to source boundaries that resulted in a Mesh Block changing allocation, a 2023 LGA variable will not be added in Census TableBuilder datasets.

To assess impacts from climate change on a broad scale, it is important to define the regions where similar sets of hazards, impacts and adaptation decisions can be made. This dataset contains the geographic regions defined for the National Climate Risk Assessment covering the mainland of Australia. This dataset will be useful for assessing climate risk on a national or state based scale, and it is designed for easy input of exposure and vulnerability data into the geographic regions.Status: FinalDataset version: v1, v20240621Maintenance: Not plannedField of research: Division 04 Earth SciencesLineage:This dataset contains the shapefile of the National Climate Risk Assessment Geographic Regions, mainland. This is a combination of two separate shapefiles (Statistical Area 3 2021 Boundaries and States and Territories 2021 boundaries shapefiles from https://www.abs.gov.au/statistics/standards/australian-statistical-geography-standard-asgs-edition-3/jul2021-jun2026/access-and-downloads/digital-boundary-files). These two files were merged to form a combined shapefile that contained the mainland geographic regions of the National Climate Risk Assessment defined by States and Territories, with WA and QLD split into two, based on SA3 boundaries, and NSW and ACT combined into one region. The rationale for splitting WA and QLD into two regions is given in the published National Climate Risk Assessment Methodology (https://www.dcceew.gov.au/climate-change/publications/national-climate-risk-assessment).

This dataset is the Tourism Regions (TR) boundaries as defined by the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS): Volume 3 - Non ABS Structures, July 2011.

Description

This dataset presents a range of data items sourced from a wide variety of collections, both Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and non-ABS. The data is derived from the November 2024 release of Data by region. Individual data items present the latest reference year data available on Data by region. This layer presents data by Statistical Areas Level 2 (SA2), 2021.

The Population and people theme is based on groupings of data within Data by region. Concepts, sources and methods for each dataset can be found on the Data by region methodology page.

The Population and people theme includes:

Estimated resident population (including age by sex)
  Births and deaths
  Internal and overseas migration
  Census data

When analysing these statistics:

Time periods, definitions, methodologies, scope, and coverage can differ across collections.
Some data values have been randomly adjusted or suppressed to avoid the release of confidential data, this means

some small cells have been randomly set to zero
care should be taken when interpreting cells with small numbers or zeros.
