    Description
    1. GENERAL DATA The table provides insight into three sickness absenteeism variables, namely the absenteeism percentage, the frequency of reporting sick and the average duration of the terminated cases of illness of employees in companies and institutions. The absenteeism percentage is shown for both the first and possibly second year of illness. The absenteeism percentage is also broken down by duration class. The average duration of discontinued cases of illness is given both for cases that ended in the first year of illness and for the second year of illness. The absenteeism figures are also broken down into various personal characteristics and characteristics of the company where the employee works and other characteristics: - gender, - age, - marital status, - ethnic group, - wage class, - part of the country, - province, - urbanity, and - economic activity (SBI 1993) by business sectors, branches and classes, - size of the company or institution, and - period. Data available from: 2002. Frequency: discontinued on February 13, 2009. Changes compared to the previous version With effect from February 13, 2009, Statistics Netherlands discontinued the NVS because the statistical representativeness of the absenteeism data was insufficient for some time. There was also insufficient confidence that the quality and representativeness of the NVS data would improve in the near future. Publication of national absenteeism figures will from now on take place on the basis of a quarterly survey of absenteeism among companies. On December 12, 2006, the 2005 data was added and the 2004 data was revised. The absenteeism figures for 2004 deviate from the previously published figures for the same period. By expanding the control and correction method, it has become possible to remove overlapping absence periods. This adjustment means that the previously published absenteeism percentage for 2004 fell by approximately 0.5 percentage point. The absenteeism figures for 2002 and 2003 will be revised later. The following corrections have been applied to the absenteeism figures for 2005: - due to the reduced quality of the UWV employee data, these data have been corrected using the employment development as derived from the Labor Accounts of Statistics Netherlands; - Only limited information is available on the absenteeism of the UWV safety net cases for the second half of 2005. This has been corrected by applying the development from 2004 to 2005 of the safety net cases from the first half of the year to the second half of 2005; - the absenteeism figures do not include the sectors of agriculture and fisheries, healthcare, education and financial institutions. Due to the liberalization of occupational health and safety services as of 1 July 2005, companies are no longer obliged to engage an occupational health and safety service for the prevention and supervision of absenteeism. This has led to an unrepresentative response in some industries. This concerns the sectors of education, health and welfare and financial institutions. Status of the figures: The figures are preliminary in nature. The National Absenteeism Statistics (NVS) replaces the quarterly survey 'Sick Absence Private Companies' that Statistics Netherlands conducted over the years 1995 up to and including the first quarter of 2004. This research was based on a written survey of a sample of companies. In time, the NVS will also replace the quarterly survey 'Sickness absenteeism of the Government' (research period 1992 to 2004 inclusive) and the annual survey 'Sickness absenteeism Government' (research period 1992 to 2003 inclusive). The aforementioned statistics will remain available on StatLine. When comparing the results of the NVS with the results of previous sickness absence statistics, the following must be taken into account: - The NVS also includes sickness absence in the government. As a result, the NVS is not entirely comparable with the old quarterly statistics, in which the national government and private companies are presented separately; - In the national government sickness absence statistics, absence longer than one year was also included in the absenteeism figure (for the NVS this is from 2005); - The NVS only shows absenteeism registered by occupational health and safety services and UWV; - At present, the NVS does not yet have sufficient data on absenteeism in the agriculture and fisheries, healthcare, education and financial institutions sectors; - The NVS makes it possible to link different background characteristics to the absenteeism and to display several absenteeism variables; - Further research is being carried out into the possibilities of publishing absenteeism figures for the (central) government separately. Changes from the previous version: none. When will there be new figures: 2009 (subject to change). Due to adjustments to the NVS system, use of data from the policy administration and Due to changes in the regulations regarding the recording of data in absenteeism registrations at companies, occupational health and safety services and the UWV, the next update will not appear before April 2009.
