    Description

    High resolution, World Bank-approved administrative boundaries. Each download option (shapefile, GeoPackage, or GeoJSON format) includes Admin 0, 1, 2, Non-Determined Legal Status Areas (NDLSA), and an ocean mask. A data dictionary and additional columns of information which can be joined to the Admin 1 and 2 files can be found as separate downloads.

    Also included are API endpoints for interactive maps.

    If Bank staff use this data to create a map- print, web, presentations for an external audience (e.g. external web sites), etc., staff must receive legal clearance by submitting the finished map to the World Bank Cartography Unit.

    To report an error in any of the admin boundary files, please raise a new issue here: https://github.com/worldbank/WB_GAD/issues and it will be considered during the next update cycle.

    Admin0 boundaries (national divisions)

    The Administrative Boundaries used by the Data in Emergencies Hub are the result of a collection of international and subnational divisions currently used by FAO country offices for mapping and reporting purposes. With only a few exceptions, they are mostly derived from datasets published on The Humanitarian Data Exchange (OCHA).

    The dataset consists of national boundaries for Afghanistan, Angola, Bangladesh, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Colombia, Comoros, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Democratic People's Republic of Korea, East Timor, Ecuador, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Federated States of Micronesia, Ghana, Grenada, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Iraq, Kingdom of Tonga, Kiribati, Kyrgyzstan, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Lebanon, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Myanmar, Namibia, Nauru, Nepal, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palestine, Philippines, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Samoa, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Somalia, South Sudan, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Suriname, Syrian Arab Republic, Tajikistan, Thailand, Togo, Tuvalu, Uganda, Ukraine, Vanuatu, Venezuela, Vietnam, Yemen, and Zimbabwe.

    This dataset contains administrative polygons grouped by country (admin-0) with the following subdivisions according to Who's On First placetypes:
    - macroregion (admin-1 including region)
    - region (admin-2 including state, province, department, governorate)
    - macrocounty (admin-3 including arrondissement)
    - county (admin-4 including prefecture, sub-prefecture, regency, canton, commune)
    - localadmin (admin-5 including municipality, local government area, unitary authority, commune, suburb)

    The dataset also contains human settlement points and polygons for:
    - localities (city, town, and village)
    - neighbourhoods (borough, macrohood, neighbourhood, microhood)

    The dataset covers activities carried out by Who's On First (WOF) since 2015. Global administrative boundaries and human settlements are aggregated and standardized from hundreds of sources and available with an open CC-BY license. Who's On First data is updated on an as-need basis for individual places with annual sprints focused on improving specific countries or placetypes. Please refer to the README.md file for complete data source metadata. Refer to our blog post for explanation of field names.

    Data corrections can be proposed using Write Field, an web app for making quick data edits. You’ll need a Github.com account to login and propose edits, which are then reviewed by the Who's On First community using the Github pull request process. Approved changes are available for download within 24-hours. Please contact WOF admin about bulk edits.

    🇫🇷 France English The ADMIN EXPRESS product describes the administrative breakdown of the metropolitan territory and the overseas departments and regions (DROM). It has an open licence 2.0. The 3 ADMIN EXPRESS, ADMIN EXPRESS COG and ADMIN EXPRESS COG carto products contain the following data layers or object classes: • REGION • EPCI • DEPARTEMEN • COMMUNE_ASSOCIEE_OU_DELEGUEE • MUNICIPALITY • TERRITORIAL COLLECTIVITE_COLLECTIVITY • CHFLIEU_COMMUNE_ASSOCIEE_OU_DELEGUEE • CHEF_LIEU • CHFLIEU_ARRONDISSEMENT_MUNICIPA • CANTON • ARRONDISSEMENT_MUNICIPAL • ROUNDING It covers all French departments, including the overseas departments and regions (DROM). Overseas communities (COM) are not covered by this product. The geometries of the source data for express administrative products come from the IGN unified database without generalisation. ADMIN EXPRESS data are delivered according to a territorial breakdown (metropolitan France and DROM), with a monthly update rate. ADMIN EXPRESS is also included in an annual edition “COG” and “COG carto”, in accordance with the official geographical code published each year by INSEE. ADMIN EXPRESS makes it possible to cross with other data sources with the aim of constructing thematic representations of the territory according to administrative granularity (municipality, county district, department, region).
