Over the five years through 2025-26, industry revenue is forecast to expand at a compound annual rate of 20.3% to reach £12.5 billion. Social media platforms are integral to people's lives, offering ways to communicate, create and view content and share information. According to Ofcom, approximately 89% of UK internet users in 2023 used social media apps or sites. Teenagers and young adults are the biggest users. Advertising is the primary revenue source for social media platforms, although subscription-based services are gaining momentum as platforms seek to diversify their incomes. TikTok is the success story of the past five years, becoming the most downloaded app between 2020 and 2022, according to Apptopia. The short-form video platform has over 30 million monthly users in the UK in 2025. After Musk's takeover, X, formerly known as Twitter, adjusted its content moderation and allowed previously banned accounts to return. As a result, over 600 advertisers pulled their ads from the site because of fears their brand may be associated with malcontent. In response to falling ad revenue, X has introduced a subscription-based service which enables users to verify themselves and boosts the number of people who view their tweets. Meta-owned Facebook and Instagram have responded by introducing a similar service. In 2025, more social media platforms are using AI to boost user engagement. This improves click-through rates and drives higher advertising revenue. Industry revenue is expected to grow by 6.3% in 2025-26. Over the five years through 2030-31, social media platforms' revenue is projected to climb at an estimated 9.2% to reach £19.4 billion. Regulations relating to how data is collected, stored, and shared will force advertisers and platforms to rethink how they can target their desired demographics. The tightening of regulations will raise industry compliance costs, weighing on profit margin. Older age groups present a new revenue opportunity for social media platforms if they can bridge the gap between passive TV consumption and interactive digital engagement. Augmented Reality (AR) technology will move beyond filters to become standard for immersive product trials, interactive ads, and virtual meetups

This dataset presents a great opportunity to actively analyze customer spending habits on products and services to improve sales performance. The data contains information about the date of purchase, year, month, customer age, gender, country, state and product category. Further analysis can reveal insights into different customer segments based on their demographic characteristics such as age and gender as well as location (country & state).
The dataset also includes 3 additional columns at the end: quantity purchased in each transaction, unit cost and unit price for each product or service purchased which can be used to determine if customers are purchasing items in bulk or buying more expensive items than usual. Likewise any discrepancies between the unit cost & price can help establish whether discounts were applied during those transactions which could potentially point towards loyalty or reward programs being put in place for returning customers. Lastly the final column shows total revenue generated from those purchases which we can use to identify any patterns whereby certain groups of customers show higher purchasing power than others based on their spends (unit cost & quantity combination) over various periods/months/years of sales interactions with them.
In summary this dataset allows us to explore numerous dimensions related to ascertaining superior sales performance by studying how its various attributes play out together when it comes down to driving profitability through improved customer acquisition strategies as well increasing purchase rates from existing ones minus any discounts available in-between!

Teens and social media
As one of the biggest social networks worldwide, Instagram is especially popular with teenagers. As of fall 2020, the photo-sharing app ranked third in terms of preferred social network among teenagers in the United States, second to Snapchat and TikTok. Instagram was one of the most influential advertising channels among female Gen Z users when making purchasing decisions. Teens report feeling more confident, popular, and better about themselves when using social media, and less lonely, depressed and anxious.
Social media can have negative effects on teens, which is also much more pronounced on those with low emotional well-being. It was found that 35 percent of teenagers with low social-emotional well-being reported to have experienced cyber bullying when using social media, while in comparison only five percent of teenagers with high social-emotional well-being stated the same. As such, social media can have a big impact on already fragile states of mind.

TwitterSocial media companies are starting to offer users the option to subscribe to their platforms in exchange for monthly fees. Until recently, social media has been predominantly free to use, with tech companies relying on advertising as their main revenue generator. However, advertising revenues have been dropping following the COVID-induced boom. As of July 2023, Meta Verified is the most costly of the subscription services, setting users back almost 15 U.S. dollars per month on iOS or Android. Twitter Blue costs between eight and 11 U.S. dollars per month and ensures users will receive the blue check mark, and have the ability to edit tweets and have NFT profile pictures. Snapchat+, drawing in four million users as of the second quarter of 2023, boasts a Story re-watch function, custom app icons, and a Snapchat+ badge.

Daily supplement habits, widening nutrient gaps and stable online shopping routines have supported reliable sales for online vitamin and supplement retailers in recent years. Which? reports that 76% of UK adults use supplements and the National Diet and Nutrition Survey shows persistent vitamin D deficiency across several age groups. These conditions give the industry a dependable base of customers who buy for long-term well-being, supporting steady online sales even as household budgets have tightened. At the same time, growth in online retail has settled, meaning retailers now compete in a channel where customers compare products across multiple websites before committing to a purchase. Over the five years through 2025-26, industry revenue is projected to rise at a compound annual rate of 3.9% to reach £1.5 billion, with revenue set to grow by 1% in 2025-26. Supermarkets, pharmacies and sports nutrition brands have improved their online stores, pulling traffic away from specialist websites and reducing the scope for retailers to rely on loyalty or a wide product range. Investigations into unsafe high-dose supplements and stricter advertising standards have increased compliance requirements, prompting businesses to review claims, strengthen product checks and present clearer dosage guidance. Cost pressures have also weighed on profitability. Rising wages, higher energy charges, more expensive digital advertising and climbing courier fees have made it harder for retailers to maintain margins in a market where customers expect quick delivery and predictable pricing. Over the five years through 2030-31, industry revenue is forecast to grow at a compound annual rate of 3.5% to reach £1.8 billion. Slow real income growth will limit rapid expansion, although easing inflation should help more households maintain their existing routines. Long-term demographic shifts, especially a growing older population and rising self-care behaviour, will continue to support spending on immunity, joint, bone and heart health products. However, tighter online safety rules and new limits on health-related targeting will increase marketing costs and reduce the impact of aggressive digital advertising. Future growth will favour retailers that blend accurate health information, transparent sourcing and efficient fulfilment with subscription models that secure repeat orders in a cautious but resilient market.
