    Description

The Surveying and Mapping Services industry in Canada has weathered uncertain conditions as downstream industries including residential, commercial, industrial construction and government authorities, fared with volatility brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. The industry's performance is largely tied to developments in residential and nonresidential construction markets, which fuel both private- and public-sector spending. As Canadian oil, gas and mining companies cut back spending on exploration and development projects in response to falling commodity prices, and construction stalled in resource-rich provinces, demand for surveying and mapping services for these projects fell. While growth from the residential construction market helped offset some losses, rising interest intended to offset rising inflation have hampered residential demand. Thus, even as energy prices came roaring back, many surveyors saw a reduction in demand. Over the five years to 2023, industry revenue has been contracting at a CAGR of 1.7% and is expected to reach $1.7 billion, including an expected drop of 3.2% over the current year. The return to growth of downstream construction markets will likely keep industry demand afloat moving forward. In addition to solid demand from industrial building construction as commodity prices remain high, housing market expansion will stimulate demand for cadastral, property line and construction surveying. The continued adoption of new technology will also enable companies to realize new efficiencies and improve the quality of their services, expanding sizable profit margins further. Industry revenue is forecast to rise at a CAGR of 1.2% to $1.8 billion over the five years to 2028.

    Description

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Aerial Photography data set includes over 2.5 million film transparencies. Beginning in 1937, photographs were acquired for mapping purposes at different altitudes using various focal lengths and film types. The resultant black-and-white photographs contain less than 5 percent cloud cover and were acquired under rigid quality control and project specifications (e.g., stereo coverage, continuous area coverage of map or administrative units). Prior to the initiation of the National High Altitude Photography (NHAP) program in 1980, the USGS photography collection was one of the major sources of aerial photographs used for mapping the United States. Since 1980, the USGS has acquired photographs over project areas that require photographs at a larger scale than the photographs in the NHAP and National Aerial Photography Program collections.

Aerial Imagery for Insurance Market Outlook

According to our latest research, the global aerial imagery for insurance market size stood at USD 1.72 billion in 2024, reflecting the sector’s rapid adoption of advanced imaging technologies for risk and claims management. The market is projected to grow at a robust CAGR of 13.4% from 2025 to 2033, reaching an estimated USD 5.18 billion by 2033. This growth is primarily driven by the increasing integration of high-resolution imagery into underwriting, claims assessment, and disaster response workflows, enabling insurers to enhance accuracy, reduce fraud, and streamline operations.

One of the most significant growth factors propelling the aerial imagery for insurance market is the rising frequency and severity of natural disasters worldwide. Insurers are increasingly leveraging advanced aerial imagery solutions to conduct rapid and precise post-event assessments, enabling quicker claims settlements and more accurate loss estimation. The ability to capture extensive, high-resolution images of affected areas allows companies to triage claims, prioritize resources, and provide timely support to policyholders. This capability is especially critical in regions prone to hurricanes, floods, wildfires, and other catastrophic events, where traditional ground-based assessments are often delayed or rendered unsafe. The integration of aerial imagery into disaster response not only improves customer satisfaction but also enhances operational resilience and cost efficiency for insurers.

Another driving force behind market expansion is the growing demand for data-driven risk management and underwriting processes. Insurers are under increasing pressure to assess risks with greater granularity and accuracy, particularly in commercial property and agriculture insurance segments. Aerial imagery, including orthophotography, oblique, and multispectral data, provides a comprehensive view of property conditions, environmental changes, and potential hazards. This wealth of geospatial data supports more informed underwriting decisions, enables the creation of precise risk maps, and facilitates proactive loss prevention strategies. The adoption of artificial intelligence and machine learning to analyze aerial imagery further enhances the predictive capabilities of insurers, reducing exposure to unforeseen risks and improving portfolio profitability.

Technological advancements in drone and satellite platforms are also accelerating market growth. The decreasing costs and increasing accessibility of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have democratized the use of aerial imagery, making it feasible for insurers of all sizes to deploy these solutions. Enhanced sensor technologies, improved image resolution, and real-time data transmission capabilities allow for more frequent and detailed monitoring of insured assets. Furthermore, regulatory frameworks in key markets are evolving to support the commercial use of drones, encouraging wider adoption across the insurance value chain. These innovations are complemented by the rise of cloud-based analytics platforms, which enable seamless integration of aerial imagery into existing insurance workflows and foster collaboration among stakeholders.

From a regional perspective, North America currently leads the aerial imagery for insurance market, driven by high insurance penetration, advanced technological infrastructure, and a proactive regulatory environment. Europe follows closely, benefiting from stringent risk management standards and a strong focus on digital transformation within the insurance sector. The Asia Pacific region is poised for the fastest growth, fueled by rapid urbanization, increasing insurance awareness, and escalating climate-related risks. Latin America and the Middle East & Africa are also witnessing rising adoption, albeit from a lower base, as insurers in these regions seek to modernize their operations and enhance disaster preparedness. This global momentum underscores the strategic importance of aerial imagery in shaping the future of insurance.

    Description

This data set is an inventory of aerial photographs held at BGS, Murchison House office and consists of a MS Excel spreadsheet containing 11 worksheets. Each worksheet contains information pertaining to the different sub-collections within the collection (9 worksheets of aerial photographs, one for aerial photograph scans, one for satellite imagery). Quality and coverage of metadata varies from worksheet to worksheet, depending on the size of the sub-collection, its pre-existing organisation, and the way in which the sub-collection was brought together (if it was not a complete entity when the inventory was started). Areal extent ranges from Shetland in the N (1200000) to the southern Lake District in the S (480000) and from Barra in the W (65000) to Stockton-on-Tees in the E (450000). By late 2001 all photos (except those being worked on by cuurently by staff) were catalogued in the inventory spreadsheet. By late 2003, the inventory spreadsheet had been updated with newly purchased and newly discovered photos as well as modified to include details of digital holdings and satellite imagery.

    Description

Here we present documentation of the ESS-DIVE reporting format for Unoccupied Aerial System (UAS) data and metadata. This reporting format provides guidance to data contributors on how to store data to maximize their discoverability, facilitate their efficient reuse, and add value to individual datasets. For data users, the reporting format will better allow data repositories to optimize data search and extraction, and more readily integrate similar data into harmonized synthesis products. The reporting format provides templates and guidance for the reporting of metadata for UAS experimental campaigns, individual flights, platform and sensor description. To improve data access and discoverability, the reporting format proposes a data description scheme of Levels based on the degree of processing, where Level 0 includes raw data, through to Level 3 being derived data end products. A range of examples of data types for each Level are given, with suggested file naming schemes. The reporting format presented here is intended to form a foundation for future development that will accommodate new UAS technologies and approaches to data access and use in the future. The reporting format documentation is maintained and updated on the ESS-DIVE Community Space GitHub at https://github.com/ess-dive-community/essdive-uas. This data package is the first published version of this reporting format, and comprises a zip file of the complete content of https://github.com/ess-dive-community/essdive-uas v1.0. The zip contains the reporting format description, instructions and variable definitions in GitHub markdown language (*.md) and metadata templates in csv format. The reporting format is designed to be compatible with other ESS-DIVE formats, and it is specifically recommended that this reporting format be used in conjunction with the File-level metadata (FLMD) and comma separated values (csv) reporting formats for submission to the ESS-DIVE repository.
