    Description

Injury from poisoning exists under several Injury Intents: unintentional (accidental), intentional self-harm, assault, undetermined and adverse effect and underdosing. Only injuries in the first four categories are reported here combined. The data show rates per 100,000 people in order to standardize between areas with different population levels. Except for age specific rates, we use age-adjusted rates because they take into account where one age group dominates a population and thus are more representative. We use diagnosis by hospital records for non-fatal injury and cause of death from death certificates for fatal injury information.

    Description

In 2023, around 72,776 people in the United States died from a drug overdose that involved fentanyl. This was the second-highest number of fentanyl overdose deaths ever recorded in the United States, and a significant increase from the number of deaths reported in 2019. Fentanyl overdoses are now the driving force behind the opioid epidemic, accounting for the majority of overdose deaths in the United States. What is fentanyl? Fentanyl is an extremely potent synthetic opioid similar to morphine, but more powerful. It is a prescription drug but is also manufactured illegally and is sometimes mixed with other illicit drugs such as heroin and cocaine, often without the user’s knowledge. The potency of fentanyl makes it very addictive and puts users at a high risk for overdose. Illegally manufactured fentanyl has become more prevalent in the United States in recent years, leading to a huge increase in drug overdose deaths. In 2022, the rate of drug overdose death involving fentanyl was 22.7 per 100,000 population, compared to a rate of just one per 100,000 population in the year 2013. Fentanyl overdoses by gender and race/ethnicity As of 2022, the rate of drug overdose deaths involving fentanyl in the United States is over two times higher among men than women. Rates of overdose death involving fentanyl were low for both men and women until around the year 2014 when they began to quickly increase, especially for men. In 2022, there were around 19,880 drug overdose deaths among women that involved fentanyl compared to 53,958 such deaths among men. At that time, the rate of fentanyl overdose deaths was highest among non-Hispanic American Indian or Alaska Natives and lowest among non-Hispanic Asians. However, from the years 2014 to 2018, non-Hispanic whites had the highest fentanyl overdose death rates.

    Description

    A. SUMMARY This dataset includes unintentional drug overdose death rates by race/ethnicity by year. This dataset is created using data from the California Electronic Death Registration System (CA-EDRS) via the Vital Records Business Intelligence System (VRBIS). Substance-related deaths are identified by reviewing the cause of death. Deaths caused by opioids, methamphetamine, and cocaine are included. Homicides and suicides are excluded. Ethnic and racial groups with fewer than 10 events are not tallied separately for privacy reasons but are included in the “all races” total.

Unintentional drug overdose death rates are calculated by dividing the total number of overdose deaths by race/ethnicity by the total population size for that demographic group and year and then multiplying by 100,000. The total population size is based on estimates from the US Census Bureau County Population Characteristics for San Francisco, 2022 Vintage by age, sex, race, and Hispanic origin.

These data differ from the data shared in the Preliminary Unintentional Drug Overdose Death by Year dataset since this dataset uses finalized counts of overdose deaths associated with cocaine, methamphetamine, and opioids only.

    B. HOW THE DATASET IS CREATED This dataset is created by copying data from the Annual Substance Use Trends in San Francisco report from the San Francisco Department of Public Health Center on Substance Use and Health.

    Market Dynamics of the Opioids

Rising prevalence of chronic pain conditions globally

The increased prescription of painkillers during post-operative procedures and an increase in patients with terminally chronic pain or diseases including HIV, and severe cough brought on by lung infections are two causes that are anticipated to increase opioid use as a pain reliever. Chronic pain affects an estimated 20% of the global population, with conditions such as arthritis, cancer, and lower back pain contributing to the growing demand for effective pain management solutions. In the past, it resulted in a demand surge for opioids and boosted growth. Another factor for the growth of the opioid drug market is the spike in the number of surgeries. According to the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2019, the prevalence of high-impact chronic pain in the United States was 7.4 percent.

    (Source-https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/databriefs/db390-H.pdf)

The aging population’s vulnerability is at high risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, arthritis, and cancer due to the high comorbid conditions. Declining fertility and mortality rates are some factors contributing to the geriatric population's rise. The impact of chronic pain increases with age and is highest among adults aged 65 years and above. Therefore, the rising geriatric population is anticipated to increase the demand for opioid drugs to manage chronic pain. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the geriatric population increased from 1.0 million in 2020 to 1.4 million in 2021.

    (Source-https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/ageing-and-health)

Opioid addiction and its side effects pose significant challenges to the market

One of the major challenges for this market is the high potential for abuse and addiction, physicians have scaled back their pain management prescriptions, decreasing global scales. The rising prevalence of opioid abuse is expected to stifle market growth, as practitioners are hesitant to prescribe opioids as pain relievers. The patient may become tolerant and need more and more drugs to achieve the effect of smoothing the pain. Moreover, using opioids for an extended period can develop a dependency, and after leaving the drug, the patient may suffer from withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, irritability, drug cravings, tremors (shaking), and others. The heightened regulatory scrutiny has resulted in stricter guidelines for prescribing opioids, impacting accessibility for patients in genuine need of pain relief. Regulatory changes often aim to strike a balance between ensuring access for patients and preventing misuse. The forecasted period illustrates a decrease in the opioid market growth due to the adversities and the negative effects of opioids. Researchers and experts have considered this and are making constant efforts to reduce and minimize the negative side effects of opioids. As per the record, drug overdose in the year 2018, had 657 deaths.

    Description

Aims: To explore previously unreported rates and trends in opioid-related mortality in Israel, 2005–2014. Methods: Data was obtained from the national database on causes of death. Drug poisoning deaths were divided into opioid-related deaths and deaths related to other drugs according to International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-10 code of underlying cause, and included drug poisoning of accidental, intentional or undetermined intent. Age-adjusted rates were calculated per 100,000 population. Rate ratios were calculated and a logistic model constructed to compare the risk of opioid-related deaths in both halves of the decade (2006–2009 and 2009–2013) and between various demographic groups. Results: While age-adjusted rates of deaths related to other drugs remained relatively stable, rates of opioid-related deaths significantly decreased during this period across all groups. During the study period, the number of opioid-related deaths in Israel declined from 1.3 to 0.3 per 100,000. Opioid-related deaths were more common among men, young adults and immigrants from the Former Soviet Union. Conclusions: Rates of opioid-related deaths in Israel were low compared to those reported in the United States and United Kingdom. In addition, the decline in opioid-related deaths in Israel is contrary to trends observed in the United States and United Kingdom. Factors that may contribute to these differences are discussed.

    Description

During 2023, there were a total of 8,606 deaths from opioid overdose in Canada, 2,648 of which occurred in the province of Ontario. This statistic shows the number of deaths from opioid overdose in Canada in 2023, by province. Opioid Use and Misuse Opioids are commonly prescribed as both short-term and long-term pain management strategies. Unfortunately, opioids are sometimes used problematically, including taking increased amounts, tampering with the route of administration, or using with the goal to improve mood, all of which can lead to addiction, overdose, and even death. In 2023, there were around 6,462 hospitalizations in Canada due to opioid poisoning. Opioid Crisis in Canada Among Canadian adults, the majority view the opioid issues of the country as a serious problem or a crisis. Moreover, many opioid deaths also involve the use of a stimulant, which adds to the polysubstance nature of the opioid crisis. Efforts against the opioid crisis in Canada are multi-faceted. One way is focused on reducing possible harm from using illicit opioid sources such as heroin or other street opioids through the use of opioid agonist treatment methods including methadone and naloxone.

    Description

Background: Injectable naloxone is already provided as take-home naloxone (THN), and new concentrated intranasal naloxone is now being introduced in Europe. Despite evidence of the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of THN, little is known about the attitudes of key target populations: people who use opioids (PWUO), family/friends, and staff. We examined the acceptability of different naloxone devices (ampoule, prefilled syringe, and concentrated nasal spray) across 5 European countries. Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare THN target groups (PWUO vs. family/friends vs. staff) in their past rates of witnessed overdose and THN administration (as indicators of future use), current THN device preference, and THN carriage on the day of survey. Method: Cross-sectional survey of respondents (age ≥18) in addiction treatment, harm reduction, and recovery services in Denmark, England, Estonia, Norway, and Scotland. A purpose-developed questionnaire (59 items) was administered in the local language electronically or in a pen-and-paper format. Results: Among n = 725 participants, 458 were PWUO (63.2%), 214 staff (29.5%), and 53 (7.3%) family members. The groups differed significantly in their likelihood-of-future THN use (p < 0.001): PWUO had the highest rate of previously witnessing overdoses (352; 77.7%), and staff members reported the highest past naloxone use (62; 30.1%). Across all groups, most respondents (503; 72.4%) perceived the nasal spray device to be the easiest to use. Most reported willingness to use the spray in an overdose emergency (508; 73.5%), followed by the prefilled syringe (457; 66.2%) and ampoules (64; 38.2%). Average THN carriage was 18.6%, ranging from 17.4% (PWUO) to 29.6% (family members). Conclusion: Respondents considered the concentrated naloxone nasal spray the easiest device to use. Still, most expressed willingness to use the nasal spray as well as the prefilled syringe in an overdose emergency. Carriage rates were generally low, with fewer than 1 in 5 respondents carrying their THN kit on the day of the survey.

    Description

The size of the Morphine market was valued at USD 30.46 Million in 2023 and is projected to reach USD 51.70 Million by 2032, with an expected CAGR of 7.85% during the forecast period.Morphine is a well-known potent opioid analgesic derived from the opium poppy plant. Since ages, it has been used enormously to reduce pain. It acts by binding to opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord, blocking pain signals and causing euphoria. It is mostly applied in cases of severe pain, including postoperative pain, pain due to cancer, and many chronic conditions of pain. Furthermore, palliative care uses it in improving the quality of life in term patients. Morphine's ability to work significantly on pain relief may be enormous, but its tendency to cause addiction and dangerous overdoses is extremely high, particularly when the treatment is longterm or at high doses; therefore, use is tightly regulated and monitored to minimize such risks. The primary drivers for the morphine market are growing incidence of chronic pain conditions, an aging population, and developments in pain management techniques. However, opioid fear of misuse and overdose has led to greater regulation and prescriptions' restrictions over morphine and other opioids. Recent developments include: Jul 2022: Bryant Ranch Prepack Inc. voluntarily recalled one lot of Morphine Sulfate 30 mg Extended-Release tablets (comprised of 10 bottles) and one lot of Morphine Sulfate 60 mg Extended-Release tablets (comprised of 10 bottles) to the consumer level., May 2022: Researchers at the University of Arizona Health Sciences and the Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences entered into an innovative partnership to combat the opioid crisis and to discover and develop modern therapeutics for the treatment of chronic pain.. Key drivers for this market are: Rising Prevalence of Orthopedic Diseases and Chronic Pain, Increasing Palliative Care Facilities. Potential restraints include: Prescription Drug Abuse, Risk Factors Associated With Intake of Morphine. Notable trends are: Pain Management Segment is Dominating the Morphine Market.
