    Description

The geologic time scale divides the 4.6 billion years of earths history into hierarchy of time periods. Every layer of rock corresponds to a specific time in the history of the formation of the Earth. The Precambrian era began with the formation of the Earth; it was followed by the Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic eras. Each of these eras is divided into periods, the periods into epochs, and epochs into ages. Paleontological studies and isotopic dating methods are used to determine the time divisions.

    Description

This data set provides forest age map products at 1-km resolution for Canada and the United States (U.S.A.). These continental forest age maps were compiled from forest inventory data, historical fire data, optical satellite data, and the images from the NASA Landsat Ecosystem Disturbance Adaptive Processing System (LEDAPS) project. These input data products have various sources and creation dates as described in the source paper by Pan et al. (2011). Canadian maps were produced with data available through 2004 and U.S.A. maps with data available through 2006. A supplementary map of the standard deviations for age estimates was developed for quantifying uncertainty.

Note that the Pan et al. (2011) paper is included as a companion file with this data set and was the source of descriptions in the guide.

Forest age, implicitly reflecting the past disturbance legacy, is a simple and direct surrogate for the time since disturbance and may be used in various forest carbon analyses that concern the impact of disturbances. By combining geographic information about forest age with estimated carbon dynamics by forest type, it is possible to conduct a simple but powerful analysis of the net CO2 uptake by forests, and the potential for increasing (or decreasing) this rate as a result of direct human intervention in the disturbance/age status.

    Description

Contained within the 3rd Edition (1957) of the Atlas of Canada is a map that shows three condensed maps of the percentage of population: under 20 years of age, 20-64 years of age, and over 64 years of age illustrated by the census division, circa 1951. Each of these maps is accompanied by a pie chart showing the percentage distribution by province and territory. The two remaining maps show urban and rural sex ratios using the number of males to 100 females by census division as of 1951. The rural sex ratio map is accompanied by a chart showing the ratio of males to 100 females by province and territory. As well, a chart accompanies the urban sex ratio map and shows the ratio of males to 100 females for chief urban centers. A set of age-sex pyramids that show the 1951 percentage distribution of males and females by quinquennial age groups for Canada, each province and the territories are also included.

    Description

This map uses smart mapping to show two variables in one map: median age, and projected population growth from 2015-2020. This helps to showcase older communities of growth versus potential up-and-coming neighborhoods. The two variables are shown with both SIZE and COLOR. The color represents the median age, and the size represents the population growth. Areas in blue have an older population while areas in orange have a younger population. The areas with a larger symbol size show areas that will have a high increase in population from 2015 to 2020. The data was created using ArcGIS Online enrichment, using the USA Block Group Area Living Atlas Analysis Layer. The attributes come from Esri's 2015 demographic estimates.

    Description

The landscape age map shows the length of time (in thousands of years) that Arctic landscapes have been available for plant colonization and the development of plant communities (Raynolds et al 2008). For most areas, this would be the time since the most recent deglaciation. Other areas first became available for plant colonization after emerging from under water due to drainage of glacial lakes or isostatic rebound. Areas for which no Wisconsin glaciation is known, were coded as 9999.These data came mostly from Ehlers, J. and P. L. Gibbard (eds., 2004). The map was based on the Circumpolar Arctic Vegetation Map (CAVM Team 2003) shapefile, with an attribute added for landscape age. Polygon boundaries were modified where necessary to follow glaciation data. Description

We constructed a framework for estimating China’s forest age by combining remote sensing time series analysis and machine learning algorithms based on over 50 000 field measurements and a remote sensing dataset. We use the proposed framework to generate a spatially explicit forest age map for China for the year 2020 and with 30 m resolution. The map is validated by comparison with independent field plots, which produces an R2 for the estimated forest-age map ranging from 0.51 to 0.63. Nationally, the average forest age is 56.1 years (standard deviation =32.7 years).

    Description

The segment of the population between 35 and 64 years of age are considered the population in the latter half of their working life. They have, for the most part, finished having children, are in the upper end of their earning potential, children are leaving the nest, mortgages are paid and assets are increasing. This map exhibits a few interesting patterns when compared with other maps in the age structure. Compared to the early working years group, the later working years segment is less concentrated in the inner parts of the city. Higher proportions are evident on the census subdivision layer in areas outside of cities reflecting past suburban migration patterns. In the north the area outside the populated places is dominated by a high proportion of people in their later working years. Note that very small populations exist in many large census divisions and subdivisions in the North.
