The population of the United States continues to increase, and the country is the third most populous in the world behind China and India. The gender distribution has remained consistent for many years, with the number of females narrowly outnumbering males. In terms of where the residents are located, California was the state with the highest population in 2023. The U.S. population by race and ethnicity The United States is well known the world over for having a diverse population. In 2023, the number of Black or African American individuals was estimated to be 45.76 million, which represented an increase of over four million since the 2010 census. Annual Resident Population Estimates by Age Group, Sex, Race, and Hispanic Origin; for the United States, States, Counties; and for Puerto Rico and its Municipios: April 1, 2010 to July 1, 2019 // Source: U.S. Census Bureau, Population Division // The contents of this file are released on a rolling basis from December through June. // Note: 'In combination' means in combination with one or more other races. The sum of the five race-in-combination groups adds to more than the total population because individuals may report more than one race. Hispanic origin is considered an ethnicity, not a race. Hispanics may be of any race. Responses of 'Some Other Race' from the 2010 Census are modified. This results in differences between the population for specific race categories shown for the 2010 Census population in this file versus those in the original 2010 Census data. The estimates are based on the 2010 Census and reflect changes to the April 1, 2010 population due to the Count Question Resolution program and geographic program revisions. // Current data on births, deaths, and migration are used to calculate population change since the 2010 Census. An annual time series of estimates is produced, beginning with the census and extending to the vintage year. The vintage year (e.g., Vintage 2019) refers to the final year of the time series. The reference date for all estimates is July 1, unless otherwise specified. With each new issue of estimates, the entire estimates series is revised. Data are grouped by five-year age category (ages 0-4, 5-9, etc.), sex, and modified race (White, Black, other) for each year from 1980 to 1989, beginning with July 1, 1980. The revised estimates were developed by interpolating from modified Decennial Census files for both 1980 and 1990.

    Measurement technique
The data presented in this dataset is derived from the latest U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2017-2021 5-Year Estimates. To measure the three variables, namely (a) Population (Male), (b) Population (Female), and (c) Gender Ratio (Males per 100 Females), we initially analyzed and categorized the data for each of the gender classifications (biological sex) reported by the US Census Bureau across 18 age groups, ranging from under 5 years to 85 years and above. These age groups are described above in the variables section. For further information regarding these estimates, please feel free to reach out to us via email at research@neilsberg.com.

    Description
    About this dataset

    Context

The dataset tabulates the population of Portales by gender across 18 age groups. It lists the male and female population in each age group along with the gender ratio for Portales. The dataset can be utilized to understand the population distribution of Portales by gender and age. For example, using this dataset, we can identify the largest age group for both Men and Women in Portales. Additionally, it can be used to see how the gender ratio changes from birth to senior most age group and male to female ratio across each age group for Portales.

    Key observations

Largest age group (population): Male # 20-24 years (1,091) | Female # 20-24 years (950). Source: U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2017-2021 5-Year Estimates.

    Scope of gender :

Please note that American Community Survey asks a question about the respondents current sex, but not about gender, sexual orientation, or sex at birth. The question is intended to capture data for biological sex, not gender. Respondents are supposed to respond with the answer as either of Male or Female. Our research and this dataset mirrors the data reported as Male and Female for gender distribution analysis.

    Variables / Data Columns

    • Age Group: This column displays the age group for the Portales population analysis. Total expected values are 18 and are define above in the age groups section.
    • Population (Male): The male population in the Portales is shown in the following column.
    • Population (Female): The female population in the Portales is shown in the following column.
    • Gender Ratio: Also known as the sex ratio, this column displays the number of males per 100 females in Portales for each age group.

    Margin of Error

Data in the dataset are based on the estimates and are subject to sampling variability and thus a margin of error. Neilsberg Research recommends using caution when presening these estimates in your research.

    Description

Dataset population: Member of the Armed Forces/Member of the Foreign Armed Forces/Schoolchild or full-time student aged 4 and over at their non-term-time address/Full-time students and schoolchildren aged 4 and over living away from home during term-time (only including schoolchildren and students where information was provided at their home address)

    Age

Age is derived from the date of birth question and is a person's age at their last birthday, at 27 March 2011. Dates of birth that imply an age over 115 are treated as invalid and the person's age is imputed. Infants less than one year old are classified as 0 years of age.

    Sex

The classification of a person as either male or female.

    Usual resident population

The main population base for statistics from the 2011 Census is the usual resident population as at census day, 27 March 2011. Although the population base for enumeration included non-UK-born short-term residents, this population is analysed separately and is not included in the main outputs from the 2011 Census.

All statistics are produced using only usual residents of the UK unless otherwise specified.

For 2011 Census purposes, a usual resident of the UK is anyone who, on census day, was in the UK and had stayed or intended to stay in the UK for a period of 12 months or more, or had a permanent UK address and was outside the UK and intended to be outside the UK for less than 12 months.

For information about the main population base for statistics, how other population sub-groups are counted, and all variable definitions, see information about ONS variables and classifications.
