    Description

In 2017, the majority of Airbnb users in the United States and Europe were between the ages 25 to 34. People in older age groups generally made up a smaller share of Airbnb users. Only five percent of Airbnb users were aged 65 or older - indicating that Airbnb is more popular among younger users.

    Airbnb popularity

The accommodation rental and sharing website Airbnb is gaining popularity all over the world. This can most likely be attributed to the company allowing for cheaper accommodation alternatives and a more personal experience of a location. In 2018, there were forecast be around 164.3 million Airbnb guest arrivals worldwide – and the average number of guests per listing was 31. A survey found that 55 percent of European and American Airbnb users were ‘very satisfied’ with their experience. On the other hand, two percent stated that they were ‘somewhat dissatisfied’ or ‘not at all satisfied’ with using the accommodation sharing platform.

    Why not use Airbnb?

Despite the large amount of people being satisfied with their Airbnb experience, there still remain people in Europe and the U.S. that do not want to use their service. A survey found that the most common reason for people not to use Airbnb was privacy concerns – with 36 percent of the respondents expressing this concern.

In the United Kingdom (UK) Airbnb had over 223 thousand active listings in 2018. From July 2017 to July 2018 such Airbnb hosts welcomed a total of 8.4 million guests into their accommodation. UK users of Airbnb outweighed the number of inbound guests, with 11.1 million guests from the UK renting Airbnb properties in the UK and elsewhere.

    What is Airbnb?

Airbnb is an online accommodation portal that allows hosts to list their properties for short term rental. The company was founded in San Francisco in 2008 by two entrepreneurs who came up with the idea when looking for ways to meet their high rental costs. Travelers like using Airbnb as it offers a cheaper alternative to hotels and gives them a more authentic experience. The company was valued at 38 billion U.S dollars in 2018.

    Airbnb in London

London is one the most popular cities in the world for Airbnb use: London had the highest number of Airbnb guest arrivals in Europe as of 2017, which is unsurprising considering it is one of the most visited tourist cities in the world. Compared to the rest of the UK, just over a third of active Airbnb listings were in London. The growth of Airbnb in London however was not without its problems. Like other cities, councils and communities raised concerns regarding the impact on the local housing supply and having control over who is living in the rentals. This led the Greater London Council to apply a 90-day limit on listings for entire homes in one year.

    Description

The statistic illustrates the usage of sharing economy platforms among business travelers in the Netherlands in the first quarter of 2016. In this quarter, roughly 70 percent of the Dutch business travelers taking part in this survey answered they do not use the sharing economy platform of private home rentals. Roughly 90 percent answered the same for Taxi services. However, a little less than a quarter mentioned that they use private home rentals such as Airbnb, but during holidays. A little less than five percent is also using it during business trips or both. When looking at the motivations to use Airbnb in the Netherlands, it reflects the same development as stated above. Roughly 85 percent of the guests said their motivation to use Airbnb is because of vacation reasons. Visiting family and friends or professional reasons is, with a little more than five percent, a much less chosen reason to use Airbnb.
