The number of subscribers of the telecommunications company Bharti Airtel was approximately *** million in financial year 2024. Out of this, *** million subscribers were from India. The company operates across Asia and Africa in ** countries. In terms of subscribers, the company ranks amongst the leading three mobile service providers. The Indian telecommunications industrySpending in the communication services segment across the south Asian country increased in 2021 despite the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. And the telecommunication spending was estimated to reach **** million U.S. dollars in 2023. With a growing subscriber base, investments into the sector have increased. The country saw a foreign direct investment equity inflow of about *** billion dollars in 2024. India became the third-largest market for mobile-based applications in the world in 2023. Government initiatives and outlookAs per the national e-governance plan, the department of Information Technology intends to set up more than a million internet-accessible common service centers, to aid the rapid increasing number of internet users within the country. The IP traffic increased four-fold in 2021, playing a vital role in revenue generation and possible mergers and acquisitions in the sector.

In 2024, the Indian state of Bihar had the most number of wireless Bharti Airtel subscribers, which amounted to more than ** million. During the measured time period, the total number of Bharti Airtel subscribers in India across all areas was over *** million, making it the second-largest wireless service provider in the country, just behind Reliance Jio.

The list of telecom service providers covered in the dataset include Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications, Quadrant, TataTelecommunications, MTNL, BSNL, Vodafone Idea, Reliance Jio, Tata, Aircel, etc.

Context

My team and I had analyzed the Indian telecommunications market from a Technology, Business and Policy point of view as a part of our Telecommunications course at Carnegie Mellon University, comparing the services offered by VI, Airtel and Jio. To understand the sentiments of customers using these communication services, we had conducted a survey.

In addition to successful collaborations with powerful celebrities including Shah Rukh Khan, Sachin Tendulkar and power couple Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan, Airtel’s marketing strategies has resulted in effective advertising over the years making it one of the most trusted brands in the country.
