    Description

The Barrow Area Information Database (BAID) data collection is comprised of geospatial data for the research hubs of Barrow, Atqasuk and Ivotuk on Alaska's North Slope. Over 9600 research plots and instrument locations are included in the BAID research sites database. Updates to the project tracking database are ongoing through field mapping of new research locations and extant sampling sites dating back to the 1940s. Many ancillary data layers are also compiled to facilitate research activities and science communication. These geospatial data sets have been compiled through BAID and related NSF efforts. Geospatial data unique to this project are currently browseable via the BAID archive and include shapefiles of research information (sampling sites and instrumentation, the NOAA-CMDL clean air sector), administrative units (Barrow Environmental Observatory Science Research District plus adjacent federal lands, village districts, zoning, tax parcels, and the Ukpeagvik Inupiat Corporation boundary), infrastructure (power poles, snow fences, roads), erosion data for Elson Lagoon and imagery (declassified military imagery, air photo mosaics, IKONOS, Landsat, Quickbird, SAR and flight line indexes). Related data sets can be browsed via BAID’s web mapping tools and downloaded via the “Related links” section below. In addition, the BAID Internet Map Server (BAID-IMS) provides browse access to a number of additional layers which are available for download through catalog pages at the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC), the Alaska Geospatial Data Clearinghouse at USGS and the Alaska State Geo-Spatial Data Clearinghouse. Some layers are proprietary and are only available for browse access in BAID-IMS through special agreement. BAID provides a suite of user interfaces (Internet Map Server, Google Earth and Adobe Flex) and Open Geospatial Consortium web services for accessing the research plots and instrument locations. Description

BLM Alaska PLSS Intersected: This dataset represents the GIS Version of the Public Land Survey System including both rectangular and non-rectangular surveys. The primary source for the data is cadastral survey records housed by the BLM supplemented with local records and geographic control coordinates from states, counties as well as other federal agencies such as the USGS and USFS. The data has been converted from source documents to digital form and transferred into a GIS format that is compliant with FGDC Cadastral Data Content Standards and Guidelines for publication. This data is optimized for data publication and sharing rather than for specific "production" or operation and maintenance. This data set includes the following: PLSS Fully Intersected (all of the PLSS feature at the atomic or smallest polygon level), PLSS Townships, First Divisions and Second Divisions (the hierarchical break down of the PLSS Rectangular surveys) PLSS Special surveys (non rectangular components of the PLSS) Meandered Water, Corners and Conflicted Areas (known areas of gaps or overlaps between Townships or state boundaries). The Entity-Attribute section of this metadata describes these components in greater detail.

    Description

Administered Lands is a BLM Alaska GIS dataset that combines publicly available borough, municipality, state, federal, and other entity management and ownership GIS data. This is the basis for BLM’s national Surface Management Agency GIS dataset that was developed to fulfill the public and Government’s need to know what agency is managing Federal land in a given area. This data set is comprised of various sources of geospatial information that have been acquired from local, state and federal agencies in order to assemble a comprehensive representation of current land surface manager. There are many land managing agencies and branches of government and this dataset attempts to classify these entities into general categories. This data does not demonstrate or infer land ownership. The business need for this data includes, but is not limited to, land use planning, permitting, recreation, and emergency response. Due to the nature of assembling geospatial information from multiple sources, integration of features into a single layer may introduce inaccurate artifacts. Acquired datasets have been cross-walked to a standardized schema to aid in the depiction of land surface manager across the state of Alaska. This dataset will contain errors. For the most up to date and accurate information, please contact the surface manager agency for the area in which you are interested.

    Description

In support of the proposed Susitna-Watana Hydroelectric Project, the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) developed a Geographic Information System (GIS)-based geologic compilation of published and unpublished maps for twelve, inch-to-mile (1:63,360-scale) quadrangles encompassing the proposed hydroelectric project footprint, including the anticipated reservoir and surrounding area. DGGS geologists reviewed and analyzed existing geologic mapping for quality and completeness, and the maps were converted for use in GIS. The conversion process included scanning and georeferencing the original hard-copy map documents, creating a geodatabase, digitizing the geologic data, assigning attributes, and producing a digital data product for public release. The best available geologic mapping was synthesized into a single compilation data layer, and is packaged along with georeferenced scans and digitized vector files of the original geologic source maps. Bedrock geology was reviewed and revised by an independent contractor to ensure consistency with current geologic interpretations of the area. This geodatabase product will be a valuable reference resource for developers, planners, and scientists working on the hydroelectric project, as well as for any other projects in the area.

This data set includes ArcInfo-formatted maps of the Kuparuk River Basin Region of the Alaskan North Slope (at 1:250,000 scale) and five subset study areas: the Upper Kuparuk River Basin Subregion (1:25,000), the Imnavait Creek Landscape (1:6,000), the Toolik Lake Landscape (1:5,000), the Imnavait Creek Grid (1:500), and the Toolik Lake Grid (1:500). Land cover (satellite-derived) and elevation data (United States Geological Survey digital elevation model (USGS DEM-derived)) are provided for the Kuparuk River Basin Region. For the five subset areas, an integrated terrain unit mapping (ITUM) approach simultaneously mapped vegetation and other terrain features as interpreted in the field from a common aerial-photograph base. The result is a single ITUM map for each area, including vegetation, geomorphology, glacial geology, and many other features. Various supplemental maps (e.g., hydrologic features and roads) for each of the areas are available for use as overlays. Data is only available as a single tar.gz file containing all of the files.

The Geospatial Fabric for National Hydrologic Modeling (Viger and Bock, 2014; Bock and others, 2021) is a dataset of hydrographic features and spatial data for use within the National Hydrologic Model that covers the conterminous United States (CONUS), Hawaii, and most major river basins that flow in from Canada. This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release consists of the geospatial fabric features and other related spatial datasets created to expand the National Hydrologic Model to Alaska. The National Hydrologic Model database contains parameters for hydrologic response units (HRUs) and stream segments needed to run the NHM. These parameters are generated using python scripts to process input datasets such as digital elevation models, soil maps, and land cover classifications. Many of the parameters were left at their default model value as they would need to be calibrated as part of the PRMS model development process. Description
