    Description

    This dataset is produced for the Government of Alberta and is available to the general public. Please consult the Distribution Information of this metadata for the appropriate contact to acquire this dataset. Physical Land Classification (PLC) is a mapping system that was designed to describe the landscape in terms of landform, soils, drainage and slope. It is a hierarchical system that captures physiographic information at the following levels: Region - 1:3 000 000 or smaller Section - 1:1 000 000 to 1:3 000 000 District - 1:500 000 to 1:1 000 000 Geomorphic System - 1:100 000 (can range from 1:50 000 to 1:250 000) Geomorphic Unit - 1:10 000 to 1:50 000 There are some variations in this hierarchy for individual study areas. The Land Classification Group (Resource Inventory Section), Alberta Energy and Natural Resources, adopted the initial Physical Land Classification methodology in 1977 to meet the needs of resource planning and management agencies. Many aspects of the methodology were developed from landform mapping schemes used by the System of Soil Classification for Canada (1976). The PLC system is essentially a geomorphic interpretation and classification system based on the principles of the inherent properties of the land and its forms. Physical Land Classification (PLC) maps have been created largely during the 1980s and 1990s as part of a program to acquire background information for Integrated Resource Plans along the eastern slopes and across northern Alberta. The data were generally mapped at the geomorphic unit level using the 1:50 000 scale National Topographic System maps as a base. The PLC hardcopy maps were scanned, georeferenced, rectified, cleaned, vectorized, merged and attributed to form GIS polygons. The polygons are attributed for parent geologic material, landform / surface expression, modifying process, slope, texture, soil taxonomy and soil drainage. This classification system was designed to enhance and replace the Canada Land Inventory (CLI) and Alberta Landform Inventory (ALI) Landform classification systems. There is more attribution associated with PLC mapping than with ALI / CLI Landform mapping. There is some overlap with the ALI / CLI Landform maps but much of the PLC mapping was conducted in areas not covered by ALI / CLI Landform maps. PLC mapping is considered to be more reliable than ALI / CLI Landform mapping as field checking was more extensive.

    This dataset is produced for the Government of Alberta and is available to the general public. Alberta Land Inventory (ALI) and Canada Land Inventory (CLI) Landform consists of a single polygon feature class with associated attributes. These attributes describe the landform polygons in terms of parent geologic material, surface form, generalized texture, and slope. The attribution includes the original ALI/CLI coding as well as the equivalent Physical Land Classification (PLC) codes. CLI and ALI landform polygons were photo interpreted in the 1960's and 70's. The linework was transferred to mylar overlay and 319 maps were published at a scale of 1:63360, using the National Topographic Series (NTS) maps as a base. The structure of the map symbols is slightly different for the two series. There is additional free-form text on the CLI landform maps to describe the direction of glacial movement and presence of specific geomorphic features such as eskers but the information is essentially the same for the two series. In some cases, a single base map may have both the initial CLI landform mapping on part of the map sheet and subsequent ALI landform mapping on the remainder of the same sheet. These published hardcopy maps and mylars were later scanned into .tif images and then processed into a single ArcInfo coverage. Scanned images were georeferenced, cleaned and vectorized. The resulting landform polygons were attributed and merged into a single coverage, using permanent water bodies from Alberta's Base Features Hydrography Polygons as a base. The ALI and CLI landform polygon feature class is derived from this merged coverage.

    Description

    This GIS dataset is a compilation of existing surficial map information for Alberta tiled into one layer. It was an interim product to produce the generalized polygon dataset (Alberta Geological Survey DIG 2013-0002), which is suitable for presentation and use at 1:1,000,000 scale. We prepared the data by appending existing GIS datasets of each surficial map of Alberta into one provincial layer with a standard attribute table. Data sources included published Alberta Geological Survey and Geological Survey of Canada maps, one master's thesis, and ecological (biophysical) land-classification maps of the mountain parks. When possible, we transferred all of the legend data from each map source into the standard schema. As part of our 1:1,000,000-scale map project, we completed mapping the unmapped areas of Alberta at roughly 500,000 to 1,000,000 scale. This dataset includes those previously unpublished data. With this dataset users can, for the first time, view the surficial geology of different map areas done at different scales and map projections by different geologists according to different legends in one GIS layer. We exported the feature class as an Esri shapefile (SurfMosaic_py_ll.shp) for public distribution. The layer file 1M_scale_legend.lyr is also included for the convenience of Esri software users (version 9.2) to render the map according to the common legend shown on Alberta Geological Survey Map 601.

    This is a georeferenced raster image of a printed paper map of the Bolton Creek, Alberta region (Sheet No. 083L02), published in 1961. It is the first edition in a series of maps, which show both natural and man-made features such as relief, spot heights, administrative boundaries, secondary and side roads, railways, trails, wooded areas, waterways including lakes, rivers, streams and rapids, bridges, buildings, mills, power lines, terrain, and land formations. This map was published in 1961 and the information on the map is current as of 1956. Maps were produced by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) and it's preceding agencies, in partnership with other government agencies. Please note: image / survey capture dates can span several years, and some details may have been updated later than others. Please consult individual map sheets for detailed production information, which can be found in the bottom left hand corner. Original maps were digitally scanned by McGill Libraries in partnership with Canadiana.org, and georeferencing for the maps was provided by the University of Toronto Libraries and Eastview Corporation.

    Description

    The drift thickness map of the Peerless Lake area (NTS 84B) shows the variation in thickness of unconsolidated sediment lying between the bedrock surface and the present-day land surface, and complements the Drift Thickness of Alberta map (Pawlowicz and Fenton, 1995). The thickness of the drift varies from locally less than 2 metres in Buffalo Head Hills to over 200 metres in the Loon River Lowland in the central part of the map area. Thick drift fills the major paleovalleys, which are the Muskwa Valley, the Red Earth Valley and Gods Valley. The drift is thinnest on the Peerless Lake Upland, the Utikuma Uplands and the Buffalo Head Hills Upland. In general the areas of thin drift correspond to areas where the bedrock topography is high. Exceptions are the hills composed of thick drift, such as the ones located south of Muskwa Lake and southwest of Peerless Lake. These features are likely hill-hole pairs produced by glaciotectonism with lakes occupying the source depressions (holes). The drift also thickens in the southwestern part of the Utikuma Uplands. Experience from more detailed investigations in eastern Alberta have shown that unmapped, narrow, deep drift-filled channels are to be expected.

    Description

    Flood studies include detailed engineering reports and flood maps. The engineering reports are typically technical in nature and document the data, assumptions, and results of the hydrologic and hydraulic analyses required to create flood maps. Flood maps are created by combining hydraulic model results for different sized floods with high-accuracy ground information. Flood maps identify where water will flow during a flood, and what land could be flooded during different sized floods. Most flood maps focus on floods caused by high river flows when water escapes the river channel, most often experienced in spring or following summer rainstorms, but they can also show areas at risk from ice jam floods or document the extent of historic floods.Flood inundation maps show areas at risk for different sized floods, including ice jam floods in some communities, and identify areas protected by flood berms. Because they map a wide range of floods, they are most often used for emergency response planning and to inform local infrastructure design. Flood hazard maps define floodway and flood fringe areas for the 1:100 design flood and are typically used by communities for planning or to help make local land use and development decisions. The floodway is the portion of the flood hazard area where flows are deepest, fastest and most destructive. The flood fringe is the portion of the flood hazard area outside of the floodway, where flood water is generally shallower and flows slower than in the floodway. High hazard flood fringe is the area within the flood fringe with deeper or faster moving water than the rest of the flood fringe. Protected flood fringe identifies areas that could be flooded if dedicated flood berms fail or do not work as designed during the 1:100 design flood. Flood hazard maps define floodway and flood fringe areas for the 1:100 design flood and are typically used by communities for planning or to help make local land use and development decisions. Flood hazard maps can also illustrate additional information for communities to consider, including incremental areas at risk for floods larger than the 1:100 design flood, such as the 1:200 and 1:500 floods.Visit www.floodhazard.alberta.ca for more information about the Flood Hazard Identification Program.     Description

    The drift thickness map of the Pelican River area (NTS 83P) shows the variation in thickness of unconsolidated sediment lying between the bedrock surface and the present-day land surface, and complements the regional drift thickness map of Alberta (Pawlowicz and Fenton, 1995). The thickness of the drift varies from less than 20 metres in uplands, such as the Pelican Mountains, to a little over 260 metres in the Wiau Valley in the northeast part of the map area. The thickest drift fills the paleovalleys containing the major valleys: the Wiau Valley and the Leismer Valley in the northeast, and the north-trending Amesbury Valley in the central portion of the area.

The distribution of Property - Alberta Township System (ATS) data to the public is provided by AltaLIS Ltd., distributing agent for the Alberta Data Partnerships Ltd. (ADP), formerly Spatial Data Warehouse Ltd. (SDW), on behalf of the Government of Alberta. The Property - Alberta Township System (ATS) data includes a GIS-ready mapping database created by Alberta Environment and Parks and includes the following: Provincial coverage of legal sub division (LSD), quarter section, section, each with statutory road allowances, and township polygons, derived from ATS V4.1 coordinates. This product is available from AltaLIS Ltd. under the Province of Alberta’s ‘Open Government Licence’.
