The goal of this project is to create a specialized model for detecting and recognizing specific wild animals, including Elephant, Gorilla, Giraffe, Lion, Tiger, and Zebra. We gathered images of these animals and used the Roboflow annotation tool to manually label each animal class. After annotation, the data was exported in the YOLOv8 format.

Next, we trained a custom YOLOv8 model on this dataset to accurately detect and recognize the selected animal species in images. The project leverages YOLOv8’s object detection capabilities to improve detection accuracy for wildlife monitoring and research purposes.

ANIMAL DETECTION The dataset used for training the animal detection model comprises a collection of annotated images featuring various wildlife species commonly encountered near railway tracks. These images capture diverse scenarios such as different lighting conditions, backgrounds, occlusions, and poses, providing a robust foundation for model training. Each image is labeled with bounding boxes indicating the precise locations of animals like deer, elephants, and cattle. The dataset was sourced and curated using publicly available wildlife imagery, and further refined to enhance model accuracy and reduce false positives. Our model is designed for real-time animal detection in video streams, focusing on identifying wildlife near railway tracks to prevent accidents. It employs a deep learning architecture trained on annotated wildlife images. The model has been optimized for accuracy and speed, ensuring efficient detection of animals in varying lighting and environmental conditions. With its capability to recognize multiple animal types and provide bounding boxes in real time, the system contributes to enhanced railway safety.
