    Description

This 19th Orange County Annual Survey, UCI, continues to monitor social, economic and political trends. The Orange County Consumer Confidence Index now stands at 112, the highest score since the study began tracking this five-question measure in 1986, surpassing the U.S. index, which is at 109. The 2000 survey was conducted May 3-14, 2000, and includes random telephone interviews with 1,005 Orange County adults in English and Spanish.Online data analysis & additional documentation in Link below. Methods The 2000 Orange County Annual Survey was directed by Mark Baldassare, professor and Johnson Chair in Civic Governance at UCI, and Senior Fellow at the Public Policy Institute of California. Cheryl Katz, research associate, was co-director. The random telephone survey included interviews with 1,005 Orange County adult residents conducted May 3-14, 2000. We follow the methods used in the 18 previous surveys.Interviewing was conducted on weekend days and weekday nights, using a computer-generated random sample of telephone numbers. Within a household, adult respondents were randomly chosen for interview. Each interview and took an average of 20 minutes to complete. The interviewing was conducted in English and Spanish as needed. The completion rate was 67%. Telephone interviewing was conducted by Interviewing Services of America in Van Nuys, CA. The sample's demographic characteristics were comparable to data from the U.S. Census, California Department of Finance, and previous Orange County Annual Surveys. The sampling error for this survey is +/3% at the 95% confidence level. This means that 95 times out of 100, the results will be within 3 percentage points of what they would be if all adults in Orange County were interviewed. The sampling error for any subgroup would be larger. Sampling error is just one type of error to which surveys are subject. Results may also be affected by factors such as question wording, ordering, and survey timing.Throughout the report, we refer to two geographic regions. North refers to cities and communities north of the 55 Freeway, including Anaheim, Orange, Villa Park, La Habra, Brea, Buena Park, Fullerton, Placentia, Yorba Linda, La Palma, Cypress, Los Alamitos, Rossmoor, Seal Beach, Westminster, Midway City, Stanton, Fountain Valley, Huntington Beach, Santa Ana, Garden Grove, Tustin, Tustin Foothills and Costa Mesa. South refers to cities and communities south of the 55 Freeway, including Newport Beach, Irvine, Lake Forest, Newport Coast, Aliso Viejo, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, Laguna Woods, Mission Viejo, Portola Hills, Rancho Santa Margarita, Foothill Ranch, Coto de Caza, Trabuco, Laguna Beach, Dana Point, San Clemente, Capistrano Beach and San Juan Capistrano. In the analysis of questions on the proposed El Toro airport, we include Newport Beach in the North County. Some of the questions in this survey are repeated from national surveys conducted by the University of Michigan in 2000, the Pew Research Center in 1999, the Wall Street Journal and NBC News in 1999, CBS News in 1999, Fox News in 2000, and the Gallup Organization in 1999. Questions with California comparisons are repeated from the Public Policy Institute of California's Statewide Surveys in 2000, directed by Mark Baldassare.

    Description

The Participation Survey started in October 2021 and is the key evidence source on engagement for DCMS. It is a continuous push-to-web household survey of adults aged 16 and over in England.

The Participation Survey provides nationally representative estimates of physical and digital engagement with the arts, heritage, museums & galleries, and libraries, as well as engagement with tourism, major events, live sports and digital.

In 2023/24, DCMS partnered with Arts Council England (ACE) to boost the Participation Survey to be able to produce meaningful estimates at Local Authority level. This has enabled us to have the most granular data we have ever had, which means there were some new questions and changes to existing questions, response options and definitions in the 23/24 survey. The questionnaire for 2023/24 has been developed collaboratively to adapt to the needs and interests of both DCMS and ACE.

    • Released: 24 July 2024.
    • Period covered: May 2023 to March 2024.
    • Geographic coverage: National , regional and local authority level data for England.
    • Next release date: September 2024.

The Participation Survey is only asked of adults in England. Currently there is no harmonised survey or set of questions within the administrations of the UK. Data on participation in cultural sectors for the devolved administrations is available in the https://www.gov.scot/collections/scottish-household-survey/">Scottish Household Survey, https://gov.wales/national-survey-wales">National Survey for Wales and https://www.communities-ni.gov.uk/topics/statistics-and-research/culture-and-heritage-statistics">Northern Ireland Continuous Household Survey.

The pre-release access document above contains a list of ministers and officials who have received privileged early access to this release of Participation Survey data. In line with best practice, the list has been kept to a minimum and those given access for briefing purposes had a maximum of 24 hours. Details on the pre-release access arrangements for this dataset are available in the accompanying material.

Patterns were identified in Census 2021 data that suggest that some respondents may not have interpreted the gender identity question as intended, notably those with lower levels of English language proficiency. https://www.scotlandscensus.gov.uk/2022-results/scotland-s-census-2022-sexual-orientation-and-trans-status-or-history/">Analysis of Scotland’s census, where the gender identity question was different, has added weight to this observation. Similar respondent error may have occurred during the data collection for these statistics so comparisons between subnational and other smaller group breakdowns should be considered with caution. More information can be found in the ONS https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/culturalidentity/sexuality/methodologies/sexualorientationandgenderidentityqualityinformationforcensus2021">sexual orientation and gender identity quality information report, and in the National Statistical https://blog.ons.gov.uk/2024/09/12/better-understanding-the-strengths-and-limitations-of-gender-identity-statistics/">blog about the strengths and limitations of gender identity statistics.

    Description

The Consumer Expenditure Survey (CE) program consists of two surveys: the quarterly Interview survey and the annual Diary survey. Combined, these two surveys provide information on the buying habits of American consumers, including data on their expenditures, income, and consumer unit (families and single consumers) characteristics. The survey data are collected for the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) by the U.S. Census Bureau. The CE collects all on all spending components including food, housing, apparel and services, transportation, entertainment, and out-of-pocket health care costs. The CE tables are an easy-to-use tool for obtaining arts-related spending estimates. They feature several arts-related spending categories, including the following items: Spending on Admissions Plays, theater, opera, and concerts Movies, parks, and museums Spending on Reading Newspapers and magazines Books Digital book readers Spending on Other Arts-Related Items Musical instruments Photographic equipment Audio-visual equipment Toys, games, arts and crafts The CE is important because it is the only Federal survey to provide information on the complete range of consumers' expenditures and incomes, as well as the characteristics of those consumers. It is used by economic policymakers examining the impact of policy changes on economic groups, by the Census Bureau as the source of thresholds for the Supplemental Poverty Measure, by businesses and academic researchers studying consumers' spending habits and trends, by other Federal agencies, and, perhaps most importantly, to regularly revise the Consumer Price Index market basket of goods and services and their relative importance. The most recent data tables are for 2022 and include: 1) Detailed tables with the most granular level of expenditure data available, along with variances and percent reporting for each expenditure item, for all consumer units (listed as "Other" in the Download menu); and 2) Tables with calendar year aggregate shares by demographic characteristics that provide annual aggregate expenditures and shares across demographic groups (listed as "Excel" in the Download menu). Also, see Featured CE Tables and Economic News Releases sections on the CE home page for current data tables and news release. The 1980 through 2022 CE public-use microdata, including Interview Survey data, Diary Survey data, and paradata (information about the data collection process), are available on the CE website.
