    Description

The Asia-Pacific region was a strong performer in the global robotics industry in 2020. Unit shipments of industrial robots in China amounted to some ******* that year. In comparison, there were almost ****** units shipped the same year in Japan, which is the next major end user of industrial robots. The majority of all industrial robots were installed in the electrical/electronics industry.

China's interest in robotics The Chinese government identified robotics as one of its strategic sectors in 2016 and launched various programs to support Chinese robotics companies and promote the adoption of robots in national manufacturing industries. The main drivers for the use of robots were the rising wages of Chinese workers and the decline in growth of the working-age population. While the number of robots installed in China was rising every year between 2016 and 2019, China's robot density (installed industrial robots per 10,000 employees) was still relatively low in 2020, especially compared to South Korea, Singapore, or Japan.

    Description

In 2021, it is estimated that **** billion U.S. dollars will be spent on intelligent process automation (IPA). While in that same year, robotic process automation (RPA) and artificial intelligence (AI) business operations are expected to have less spending overall with *** and * billion U.S. dollars, respectively. However, by 2023, RPA and AI business operations are expected to gain significant traction. Differences between RPA, IPA, and AI operations Each of these digitalized processes are relatively similar, however, they each have different functions. Robotic process automation (RPA) examines large volumes of data from software processes and translates them to potential triggers for new actions, responses, and communication with other systems. RPA is typically associated with software robots or “bots” that handle repetitive rule-based digital tasks. On the other hand, intelligent process automation (IPA) allows for business functions that are automatically enabled, that allows the robots to learn from performing their tasks. IPA is therefore, more “smart” and more flexible since it is not rule-driven. The “smartest” of these is artificial intelligence (AI) operations. AI operations simulates human thought processes across the enterprise operations, without manual intervention like with RPA and IPA, and involves self-learning systems more advanced than IPA. Impact on workforce Each of these technologies have the potential to impact the human workforce in various industries, displacing many from their previous roles. For example, startups such as UiPath are using RPA to take over repetitive and routine data entry and basic processing tasks, especially in the healthcare industry. The main strategy to combat the displaced workforce from the intelligent automation technology deployment is retraining the employees to work on new business needs that are beyond the scope of the automation and AI business operations. This could be anything from exception handling to perhaps more customer-facing roles.

Worldwide industrial robot shipments amounted to some ******* in 2022, just a slight increase compared to 2021. It is projected that industrial robot shipments will increase significantly in the coming years. It is expected that in 2026, global industrial robot shipments will amount to about *******. Leading industrial robot markets Japan, China, the United States, South Korea, and Germany are counted among the five leading industrial robot markets worldwide. In emerging manufacturing markets, the growth trend is largely driven by rising wages that make the use of machines appear a viable alternative to human labor. Leading applications for industrial robots Industrial robots can be deployed for a wide range of tasks in a growing number of industries. Although the highly automated car manufacturing sector remains one the largest areas of application for electro-mechanical machines, it was the electrical/electronics industry that installed the most industrial robots in 2020. It has to be noted that the field of robotics is a part of another industry: the automation market. This industry is comprised of a variety of products and services, including relays, switches, sensors and drives, machine vision and control systems, as well as industry software development and services. Conglomerates like Siemens, Mitsubishi Electric or General Electric are the major vendors of industrial automation and industry software. The key players in the industrial robot market include ABB, KUKA, Fanuc, Kawasaki, and Yaskawa.
