    Description

Over the five years through 2024-25, mobile phone retailers’ revenue is anticipated to fall at a compound annual rate of 4.5% to £2.8 billion. Revenue plummeted during the COVID-19 pandemic, with a 14.4% fall in 2020-21 – this was driven by low consumer confidence within the UK economy, meaning consumers were less willing to make large discretionary purchases such as new mobile phones, alongside forced store closures which meant phone retailers saw their footfall plunge. After the pandemic crash, revenue has trended upwards, but at a slower rate than inflation, with revenue yet to return to pre-COVID figures. Mounting 5G accessibility across the UK has propped up demand for new phone models with 5G connectivity enabled. However, many consumers have seen the innovation in the latest phone models as lacking – they offer few new features beyond 5G connectivity. This has contributed to people keeping hold of their phones for longer on average. Sky-high inflation since late 2021-22 has also been a major barrier to revenue growth and profit levels for phone retailers; the cost-of-living crisis this sparked left customers feeling more financially pressured and lacking enough disposable income to purchase the latest smartphones. Inflation has also led to higher purchase and running costs for retailers. These factors have combined to subdue profit in recent years. With inflationary pressures now easing (inflation fell back to its target level of 2% in May 2024), the industry's outlook is more positive. Revenue is forecast to grow by 0.2% in 2024-25 while the average profit margin is slated to be 2.6%. Mobile phone retailers could struggle to find new areas for growth in the future. According to Uswitch, as of 2023, 92% of the UK population already own a smartphone, meaning retailers can no longer rely on the increasing popularity of phones to fuel growth. AI implementation within smartphones has some potential to stimulate growth, as it will cause a surge in consumer demand if perceived as truly innovative. At the same time, easing concerns over consumer confidence and disposable income levels should encourage people to shell out on new phone models. Over the five years through 2029-30, revenue is forecast to inch upwards at a compound annual rate of 0.2% to £2.9 billion.

The UK mobile payments industry is experiencing robust growth, driven by increasing smartphone penetration, the rising adoption of contactless payments, and the expanding e-commerce sector. The market's convenience and security features are attracting a wider user base, encompassing both younger demographics adept at digital technologies and older generations increasingly comfortable with mobile solutions. While precise figures for the UK market size are unavailable from the provided data, we can infer significant value based on the global CAGR of 22.30% and the substantial presence of major players like Apple Pay, Google Pay, and others operating within the UK. Considering the UK's advanced digital infrastructure and high mobile phone usage, it's reasonable to estimate the UK mobile payment market to be a substantial segment of the overall European market. The market's growth is further fueled by innovations like biometric authentication, improved security protocols, and the integration of mobile payments into various loyalty programs and reward systems, enhancing user engagement. Looking ahead, the UK mobile payments market is poised for continued expansion. Description

Streaming services have evolved in recent years, with the split of services shifting away from downloads in favour of streaming. The dominance of the largest streaming providers has swelled, spearheaded by Spotify, although some smaller music streaming platforms have found success in offering niche services. Streaming providers have also expanded their offerings in order to keep hold of subscribers in an increasingly competitive environment; for example, some have created tiered packaging systems (such as family or premium accounts) and focused on improving the user experience with tailored algorithms, custom playlists and offline listening. Others have brought in complimentary offerings, like podcasts and audiobooks. Integration efforts have also intensified, with Apple and Google incorporating listening apps into their phone offerings, while Amazon has amalgamated its subscription services and smart devices. Revenue is projected to expand at a compound annual rate of 2% over the five years through 2024-25 to £1.4 billion. Revenue dipped in 2020-21, when people didn’t need to listen to music while travelling and commuting thanks to COVID-19 restrictions, prompting some customers to cancel their music streaming subscriptions. Despite this, the industry emerged as a primary entertainment source as alternative options, such as cinemas, pubs and festivals, were inaccessible. Post-pandemic, streaming services have broadened their reach with the waning popularity of downloads, the resumption of regular work routines and frail consumer confidence and disposable income. Revenue is slated to swell by 4.5% in 2024-25 as a result. At the same time, music streaming service providers’ profit has stayed strong, buoyed by recent price increases and platform advancements among leading companies. Over the five years through 2029-30, revenue is expected to climb at a compound annual rate of 5.5% to reach £1.8 billion. Competition is likely to remain high, with consumer preference likely to shift to platforms that offer greater levels of compatibility with other technological products. To stay competitive, music downloading and streaming service providers are likely to continue to innovate the types and tiers of packages they offer to fully monetise their services and reach a wider variety of consumers. Innovation will build, with platforms looking to further incorporate AI to provide tailored song suggestions.

    Description

Mobile phone repair services industry is growing, benefitting from the high number of mobile connections in the UK, which actually exceeds the UK's population. A fall in consumer confidence and stagnant disposable income means that consumers are holding onto their mobile phones for longer. Consumers increasingly consider repairing an existing phone more cost-effective than buying a replacement. Despite the opportunity presented by these circumstances, revenue growth has been constrained, with some consumers choosing to delay repairs till they are more confident in the economy. The expansion in the number of mobile connections and the falling cost of phone contracts is rising the number of phones in use, boosting the need for repair services as a portion of phones develop faults. Over the five years through 2024-25, revenue is forecast to climb at a compound annual rate of 2% to £818.6 million, including projected growth of 5.8% in 2024-25, when the average profit margin will be 22.7%. Revenue declined in 2021-22, partially owing to higher levels of cautiousness among consumers. Over the five years through 2029-30, revenue is expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 2.8% to reach £937.6 million. The number of mobile phone connections is forecast to increase, supporting revenue growth. Disposable incomes are also likely to recover, increasing the ability of consumers' ability to afford repairs on their mobile devices. As a result, the number of industry enterprises is also likely to grow. Furthermore, the average profit margin is set to rise as supply chain issues ease and the cost of parts fall.

    Description

The European IT device market, encompassing PCs (laptops, desktops, tablets), and phones (landlines, smartphones, feature phones), is a significant sector experiencing steady growth. While a precise market size for 2025 is not provided, we can extrapolate based on the given CAGR of 1.80% and a presumably large base year value. Assuming a 2024 market size of approximately €200 billion (a reasonable estimate for the European IT device market), a 1.8% CAGR would project a 2025 market value around €203.6 billion. Growth is driven by several factors, including the increasing adoption of smartphones and tablets, particularly among older demographics, the ongoing demand for high-performance PCs in professional and educational settings, and the rise of remote work and hybrid work models fueling laptop sales. Trends include increasing demand for 5G-enabled devices, growing preference for lightweight and portable laptops, and a shift towards subscription-based software and services. However, restraints include fluctuating economic conditions that affect consumer spending, supply chain disruptions impacting device availability, and the challenges of managing e-waste and promoting sustainable practices within the industry. The market is highly fragmented with major players like Apple, Microsoft, Samsung, and Lenovo competing intensely for market share, alongside several prominent regional players. Specific market segments within Europe show varying growth trajectories. For example, the smartphone segment is expected to remain dominant, driven by continuous technological advancements and attractive pricing strategies. However, the PC segment is likely to experience more moderate growth, with fluctuations dependent on economic cycles and business investment. The continued penetration of smart devices in Europe points towards a positive outlook for the market over the coming years. The forecast period from 2025-2033 projects continued expansion of the European IT device market. While the overall CAGR remains at 1.8%, specific segments will experience different growth rates depending on technological advancements, consumer preferences, and macroeconomic factors. The competitive landscape will likely remain intense, with established players continuously innovating to maintain their market position. Successfully navigating the challenges of sustainability, supply chain resilience, and economic volatility will be key to sustained growth for companies operating within this dynamic market. Regional variations across Europe will persist, with countries like Germany, the UK, and France likely maintaining their position as leading markets due to higher per capita income and strong technological adoption rates. Successful strategies will involve targeted product development, customized marketing approaches for specific regions, and robust customer service tailored to the unique preferences of European consumers. Recent developments include: September 2022: Apple announced its decision to implement significant pricing hikes for its in-app purchases and apps from Europe to Asia, safeguarding its profits when key currencies fell against the US dollar. Apple has been more cautious as it deals with a stuttering economy, even if it is doing better than some of its industry counterparts., October 2022: Nokia announced the launch of the X30 5G in the United Kingdom and other European markets in September 2022. The starting price for this phone in Europe and the UK is EUR 519 (USD 548) and GBP 399 (USD 489). The business intends to introduce the product in India before the end of this year with a price tag of approximately INR 40,000 (USD 489).. Key drivers for this market are: Robust Demand for Smart Phones, Rapid Roll-Out of 5G Across the Region. Potential restraints include: Robust Demand for Smart Phones, Rapid Roll-Out of 5G Across the Region. Notable trends are: Smartphone Demand Boosting the Market.
