This article uses a multiscale approach for assessing landscape changes in one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots in Brazil, the Rio Doce State Park (PERD). In this article, we assess land use changes over a 30 year period. Our results show that, while inside the park landscape changes were minimal, in the park buffer zone human induced changes are steadily rising due to an increase in eucalyptus plantations and urban sprawl that grew by 4% and 1.9%, respectively. Agricultural land has been reduced by 6.35%, but there are trends that a form of welcome forest transition has been occurring. We report an increase in native forests from 40,588 ha in 1985 to 45,690 ha in 2015. The analysis of human impacts in the study area delivers very different results when varying the pixel size from 25 ha to 900 m2. The former shows a very high level of human influence while the latter reveals small but vital patches of native forest offering hopeful opportunities for sustainable natural resource management in this critical biome. Our work stresses the importance of better targeted policy making and sympathetic land use management of buffer zones of protected areas. Currently, such zones suffer from many development pressures and often experience contradictory policy frameworks which encourage a clash between biodiversity conservation and intensive agro husbandry production. Highlights: • We characterize land use transitions in a hotspot of biodiversity in Brazil. • Analysis at finer resolution show that there is still hope for forest recovery. • For instilling sustainable forest transitions there is the need for fresh governance.

ABSTRACTThis study aimed to analyze the conflict of land use and land cover in Permanent Preservation Areas (PPA) of the ‘Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia do Espírito Santo’ - Ifes, Alegre Campus, in light of the current Brazilian Forest Code. The springs, watercourses, slopes and hill tops of the PPA were defined and investigated. The slopes and hill tops were obtained by the global digital elevation model GEDM-ASTER. Land use and land cover were achieved by photo-interpretation of orbital image sensor Geoeye 1 (spatial resolution of 0.50 m), totaling 36 thematic classes. The results showed that the PPAs occupy 34.33% of the total Ifes area, with an extension of 114.32 ha. The hilltops and watercourses occupy the largest areas, corresponding to 16.94% and 14.03%, respectively. The watercourses are the most affected areas, and the main classes responsible for conflicts are natural pastures (20.41 ha) and non-paved roads (1.18 ha).

AbstractThe Upper Coxim River Basin (UCB) has an area of approximately 1375 km2located in the municipalities of São Gabriel do Oeste and Camapuã in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. The aim of this work was to evaluate the environmental fragility of the UCB using fuzzy logic implemented at a Geographic Information System to propose a model of physical-territorial management. Spatial data used were arranged in a database implemented in a Geographic Information System (GIS). The generation of the physical-territorial management model was carried out considering preparation of UCB relief mapping, potential natural erosion, land-use and land-cover, environmental fragility and, environmental legislation. Results indicated a significant relationship between landforms and their uses: mechanized agriculture in the Chapada of the São Gabriel and livestock development on the Plateau Taquari hills. The guidelines set out by the type of land use proposals were: Priority areas for permanent preservation, priority area for rehabilitation and preservation and areas for sustainable use.
