Expands the use of internal data for creating Geographic Information System (GIS) maps. SSA's Database Systems division developed a map users guide for GIS data object publishing and was made available in an internal Sharepoint site for access throughout the agency. The guide acts as the reference for publishers of GIS objects across the life-cycle in our single, central geodatabase implementation.
Lesson: Navigate a 3D world, add data from online, and share your results. In this lesson, you'll explore the world with ArcGIS Earth, a desktop application that displays 2D and 3D data from around the globe. You'll add map layers from files and ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World, then pan, zoom, and tilt to view them. Your exploration will encompass Nairobi, Mount Fuji, California, and several other locales. When finished, you'll share your map data via email. This lesson was last tested on March 29, 2022 using ArcGIS Earth 1.14. If you're using a different version of ArcGIS Earth, you may encounter different functionality and results.RequirementsArcGIS EarthUser, Publisher, or Administrator role in an ArcGIS organization for ArcGIS Online (get a free trial) or ArcGIS Enterprise (see configuration details)
(See USGS Digital Data Series DDS-69-H) A geographic information system focusing on the Upper Cretaceous Taylor and Navarro Groups was developed for the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) 2003 assessment of undiscovered, technically recoverable oil and natural gas resources of the Gulf Coast Region. The USGS Energy Resources Science Center has developed map and metadata services to deliver the 2003 assessment results GIS data and services online. The Gulf Coast assessment is based on geologic elements of a total petroleum system (TPS) as described in Condon and Dyman (2005). The estimates of undiscovered oil and gas resources are within assessment units (AUs). The hydrocarbon assessment units include the assessment results as attributes within the AU polygon feature class (in geodatabase and shapefile format). Quarter-mile cells of the land surface that include single or multiple wells were created by the USGS to illustrate the degree of exploration and the type and distribution of production for each assessment unit. Other data that are available in the map documents and services include the TPS and USGS province boundaries. To easily distribute the Gulf Coast maps and GIS data, a web mapping application has been developed by the USGS, and customized ArcMap (by ESRI) projects are available for download at the Energy Resources Science Center Gulf Coast website. ArcGIS Publisher (by ESRI) was used to create a published map file (pmf) from each ArcMap document (.mxd). The basemap services being used in the GC map applications are from ArcGIS Online Services (by ESRI), and include the following layers: -- Satellite imagery -- Shaded relief -- Transportation -- States -- Counties -- Cities -- National Forests With the ESRI_StreetMap_World_2D service, detailed data, such as railroads and airports, appear as the user zooms in at larger scales.
(See USGS Digital Data Series DDS-69-E) A geographic information system focusing on the Jurassic-Cretaceous Cotton Valley Group was developed for the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) 2002 assessment of undiscovered, technically recoverable oil and natural gas resources of the Gulf Coast Region. The USGS Energy Resources Science Center has developed map and metadata services to deliver the 2002 assessment results GIS data and services online. This map service shows the structural configuration on the top of the Cotton Valley Group in feet below sea level. The map was produced by calculating the difference between a datum at the land surface (either the kelly bushing elevation or the ground surface elevation) and the reported depth of the Cotton Valley Group. This map service also shows the thickness of the interval from the top of the Cotton Valley Group to the top of the Smackover Formation.

Tabular data representing library and library branch locations was downloaded from the Indiana State Library (https://www.in.gov/library/directory-of-indiana-libraries/pldirectory/). Two spreadsheets were downloaded from this site, PL-Mailing-Addresses.xls, and PL-Branch-Directory.xls. Each spreadsheet was separately geocoded by IGIO staff, and any unmatched addresses were manually placed. Both datasets were then combined using the "Merge" tool in ArcGIS Pro before publishing. Attributes include the library name, branch name (when applicable), full address (address, city, state, and ZIP code), street address, mailing address (when applicable), city, state, ZIP code, library director name, and date updated by the State Library. This layer's default symbology is the same symbol with a different size and color for libraries versus branches. Library locations are larger (12 pt size) and blue, and branches are smaller (10 pt size) and purple.
