The zoo in your community is so popular and successful that it has decided to expand. After careful research, zookeepers have decided to add an exotic animal to the zoo population. They are holding a contest for visitors to guess what the new animal will be. You will use skills you have learned in classification and analysis to find what part of the world the new animal is from and then identify it.
To help you get started, the zoo has provided a list of possible animals. A list of clues will help you choose the correct answers. You will combine information you have in multiple layers of maps to find your answer.

TwitterThere are multiple ways to get students into your group. We’ve laid out a few below. We recommend walking everyone through this process in class. The first step for all students is to create an ArcGIS account following the same instructions you followed in Step One. We have created a StoryMap to guide our students through this process , which will also be distributed to your ArcGIS account in Step 2.Once your students have accounts follow the procedure below that makes the most sense for your situation.

After Christopher Columbus found the New World in 1492, Spain and Portugal were eager to conquer and claim new lands. The two world powers decided to divide the world in half by drawing a line that ran through the Atlantic Ocean. Based on this line, Spain could claim new lands in the western half of the world, and Portugal could claim lands in the eastern half.

This point datalayer shows the locations of schools in Massachusetts. Schools appearing in this layer are those attended by students in pre-kindergarten through high school. Categories of schools include public, private, charter, collaborative programs, and approved special education. This data was originally developed by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) GIS Program based on database information provided by the Massachusetts Department of Education (DOE). The update published on April 17th, 2009 was based on listings MassGIS obtained from the DOE as of February 9th, 2009. The layer is stored in ArcSDE and distributed as SCHOOLS_PT. Only schools located in Massachusetts are included in this layer. The DOE also provides a listing of out-of-state schools open to Massachusetts' residents, particularly for those with special learning requirements. Please see http://profiles.doe.mass.edu/outofstate.asp for details. Updated September 2018.

These exercises are designed to introduce students to analyzing real-world datasets with Matlab (4 exercises) and ArcGIS (1 exercise). The activities all require students to watch a video and complete a task before class time, during which they would follow the guide to complete several different tasks. These tasks are specific to learning about Meadowbrook Creek, a first order urban stream in the Syracuse, NY area, but could easily be developed for other places and other types of datasets.

TwitterHi, I'm Kiaran Ratcliffe a GIS Consultant within the Education Team at Esri UK. Esri is a company that creates and distributes GIS software, and my focus is on helping schools and universities access and use this software effectively. That means helping educators bring GIS into the classroom in ways that are engaging, inclusive, and relevant. We want students to leave school or university not just knowing how to use GIS, but understanding how to apply it to make a difference—socially, environmentally, and across all kinds of industries. It’s a really rewarding role. We get to support both students and teachers, and help them use modern spatial tools to explore the world, solve problems, and tell powerful stories with data.

TwitterThis layer shows the location of Student Health Service Centres and Special Assessment Centres in Hong Kong. It is a subset of the data made available by the Department of Health under the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (the “Government”) at https://DATA.GOV.HK/ (“DATA.GOV.HK”). The source data is in XLSX format and has been processed and converted into Esri File Geodatabase format and then uploaded to Esri’s ArcGIS Online platform for sharing and reference purpose. The objectives are to facilitate our Hong Kong ArcGIS Online users to use the data in a spatial ready format and save their data conversion effort. For details about the data, source format and terms of conditions of usage, please refer to the website of DATA.GOV.HK at https://data.gov.hk.

TwitterPublishing your data and maps from desktop GIS to ArcGIS Online is essential to unlock modern GIS capabilities like collaboration or sharing your projects using interactive data-driven applications. The key to unlock this connected GIS is ArcGIS Identity. With an ArcGIS Identity you are unlocking a connected GIS. You can share your maps or selected map layers as a web layer. Web layers are stored in your organization's ArcGIS Online as one of the 7 different layer types of hosted layers. Depending on the layer type, the hosted layer will be shared with different capabilities.

TwitterIf your institution has implemented SSO for ArcGIS, mapping will be always at your fingertips be that in the web browser with ArcGIS Online, on your desktop machine with ArcGIS Pro, or in the field with a mobile device.SSO allows members of your institution to use ArcGIS software using the same logins they use to access your institution's internal systems like emails, blackboard, or the Microsoft suite. All you need is the URL of the your institution's ArcGIS Online portal. You may need to contact your lecturer or an admin to find out the URL.
