It provides a fundamental base layer of geographic information on which you can build a wide range of applications and is particularly suited to State-wide and national applications. 1:10Million - The key source for production of the Builtup Areas, Drainage, Framework, Localities, Rail Transport, Road Transport and Waterbodies layers was the GEODATA TOPO 250K Series 1 product. Some revision of the Builtup Areas, Road Transport, Rail Transport and Waterbodies layers was carried out using the latest available satelite imagery. The primary source for the Spot Heights, Contours and Offshore layers was the GEODATA TOPO 10M Version 1 product. Background HealthCyberMap aims at mapping parts of health information cyberspace in novel ways to deliver a semantically superior user experience. This is achieved through "intelligent" categorisation and interactive hypermedia visualisation of health resources using metadata, clinical codes and GIS. HealthCyberMap is an ArcView 3.1 project. WebView, the Internet extension to ArcView, publishes HealthCyberMap ArcView Views as Web client-side imagemaps. The basic WebView set-up does not support any GIS database connection, and published Web maps become disconnected from the original project. A dedicated Internet map server would be the best way to serve HealthCyberMap database-driven interactive Web maps, but is an expensive and complex solution to acquire, run and maintain. This paper describes HealthCyberMap simple, low-cost method for "patching" WebView to serve hypermaps with dynamic database drill-down functionality on the Web. Results The proposed solution is currently used for publishing HealthCyberMap GIS-generated navigational information maps on the Web while maintaining their links with the underlying resource metadata base. Conclusion The authors believe their map serving approach as adopted in HealthCyberMap has been very successful, especially in cases when only map attribute data change without a corresponding effect on map appearance. It should be also possible to use the same solution to publish other interactive GIS-driven maps on the Web, e.g., maps of real world health problems.
CrimeMapTutorial is a step-by-step tutorial for learning crime mapping using ArcView GIS or MapInfo Professional GIS. It was designed to give users a thorough introduction to most of the knowledge and skills needed to produce daily maps and spatial data queries that uniformed officers and detectives find valuable for crime prevention and enforcement. The tutorials can be used either for self-learning or in a laboratory setting. The geographic information system (GIS) and police data were supplied by the Rochester, New York, Police Department. For each mapping software package, there are three PDF tutorial workbooks and one WinZip archive containing sample data and maps. Workbook 1 was designed for GIS users who want to learn how to use a crime-mapping GIS and how to generate maps and data queries. Workbook 2 was created to assist data preparers in processing police data for use in a GIS. This includes address-matching of police incidents to place them on pin maps and aggregating crime counts by areas (like car beats) to produce area or choropleth maps. Workbook 3 was designed for map makers who want to learn how to construct useful crime maps, given police data that have already been address-matched and preprocessed by data preparers. It is estimated that the three tutorials take approximately six hours to complete in total, including exercises.

Individual boundary polylines were created by first making a point shapefile of the line endpoints or a series of points, then converting the points to a polyline. The point/polyline conversion was done using XTools 'Make One Polyline from Points' tool. Point locations were based on latitude/longitude coordinates given in the technical report or geographic landmark (i.e. islands, points, state/international boundary lines, etc.). Points requiring an azimuth bearing were created in a projected view (UTM Zone 17 NAD27) using the Distance and Azimuth Tools v. 1.6 extension developed by Jenness Enterprises.The polyline shapefiles created in step 1 and an existing polyline shapefile of the international boundary were merged together using the ArcView GeoProcessing Wizard.The shapefile generated in step 2 was converted to a line coverage using the ArcToolbox Conversion Tools - Feature Class to Coverage.The line coverage topology was cleaned and updated using the ArcInfo Workstation CLEAN (dangle length and fuzzy tolerance both set to 0.001) and BUILD commands.The boundary line coverage and an existing Lake Erie shoreline shapefile (derived from ESRI 100k data) were merged together using the ArcView GeoProcessing Wizard.The shapefile generated in step 5 was converted to a line coverage using the ArcToolbox Conversion Tools - Feature Class to Coverage.Topology of the boundary/shoreline coverage was cleaned and updated using the ArcInfo Workstation CLEAN (dangle length and fuzzy tolerance both set to 0.00001) and BUILD commands. BUILD was done for both line and polygon topology.The polygon feature from the coverage generate in step 7 was converted to a shapefile using Theme\Convert to Shapefile in ArcView.
The Long Valley Caldera GIS Database provides an overview of the studies being conducted by the Long Valley Observatory in eastern California from 1975 to 2001. The database includes geologic, monitoring, and topographic datasets related to Long Valley caldera. The CD-ROM contains a scan of the original geologic map of the Long Valley region by R. Bailey. Real-time data of the current activity of the caldera (including earthquakes, ground deformation and the release of volcanic gas), information about volcanic hazards and the USGS response plan are available online at the Long Valley observatory web page (http://lvo.wr.usgs.gov). The Atlas of the Biosphere is a product of the Center for Sustainability and the Global Environment (SAGE), part of the Gaylord Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. This collection grew out of a prototype case tracking and crime mapping application that was developed for the United States Attorney's Office (USAO), Southern District of New York (SDNY). The purpose of creating the application was to move from the traditionally episodic way of handling cases to a comprehensive and strategic method of collecting case information and linking it to specific geographic locations, and collecting information either not handled at all or not handled with sufficient enough detail by SDNY's existing case management system. The result was an end-user application designed to be run largely by SDNY's nontechnical staff. It consisted of two components, a database to capture case tracking information and a mapping component to link case and geographic data. The case tracking data were contained in a Microsoft Access database and the client application contained all of the forms, queries, reports, macros, table links, and code necessary to enter, navigate through, and query the data. The mapping application was developed using Environmental Systems Research Institute's (ESRI) ArcView 3.0a GIS. This collection shows how the user-interface of the database and the mapping component were customized to allow the staff to perform spatial queries without having to be geographic information systems (GIS) experts. Part 1 of this collection contains the Visual Basic script used to customize the user-interface of the Microsoft Access database. Part 2 contains the Avenue script used to customize ArcView to link the data maintained in the server databases, to automate the office's most common queries, and to run simple analyses.

For plats recorded prior to 1995, the boundaries were digitized by temporary employees using an ARCVIEW application. All subsequent plats are put into GIS using coordinate geometry (cogo). New plats and partitions are entered into GIS on a weekly basis.
Note, this version 10-minute by 10-minute grid cells is not clipped to the Great Lakes shoreline, however see clipped companion dataset if shoreline representation is needed.After the union of the Lake Huron and 10 min by 10 min grid coverages, some of the resulting polygons were unioned and nearly all were assigned unique ID numbers as to correpond to the generally accepted 10 min grid definition used by the fishery community. This attribute is found under the field titled "Grid10min." For example maps containing said generally accepted grid definitions, see for example: <"Status of the Fishery Resource - 1989"; A Report by the Technical Fisheries Review Committee on the Assessment of Major Fish Stocks in those Waters of the Upper Great Lakes Ceded in the Treaty of 1836; U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Chippewa/Ottawa Treaty Fishery Management Authority; Appendix Figure B1.2>. The two edits were done at approximately: -83.32 lon, 44.50 lat; -84.22 lon, 46.00 lat.The Mackinac Bridge between the Michigan lower peninsula and Michigan upper peninsula was not included with the NOAA shoreline data that was merged. It was also added graphically, extending from approximately -84.73 lon, 45.79 lat to -84.72, 45.85.There has been a reduction of detail from the original shoreline data and grid during editing within ArcInfo/ArcView due to tolerances/snapping/etc. which would be evident upon comparison of this coverage with the two original coverages. The original grid coverage was created in ArcInfo using the Generate command - Fishnet option and was "straight" prior to union. After union of the two coverages, close inspection of some of the grid polygon border-arcs will reveal slight shifts in their "straightness". There has been no attempt to remedy said flaw. It is believed that the overall accuracy is within reason for many fishery applications.

This land cover data set is derived from the original raster based Globcover regional (Africa) archive. It has been post-processed to generate a vector version at national extent with the LCCS regional legend (46 classes). This database can be analyzed in the GLCN software Advanced Database Gateway (ADG), which provides a user-friendly interface and advanced functionalities to breakdown the LCCS classes in their classifiers for further aggregations and analysis.

This land cover product is a vector version (ESRI shape) of the Globcover archive that was published in 2008 as result of an initiative launched in 2004 by the European Space Agency (ESA). Globcover is currently the most recent (2005) and resoluted (300 m) datasets on land cover globally. Given the need of this valuable information for environmental studies, natural resources management and policy formulation, through activities of the Global Land Cover Network (GLCN) programme, the Globcover has been reprocessed to generate databases at national extent that can be analyzed through the Advanced Database Gateway software (ADG) by GLCN. ADG is a cross-cutting interrogation software that allows the easy and fast recombination of land cover polygons according to the individual end-user requirements. Aggregated land cover classes can be generated not only by name, but also using the set of existing classifiers. ADG uses land cover data with a Land Cover Classification System (LCCS) legend. The ADG software is available for download on the GLCN web site at http://www.glcn.org/sof_7_en.jsp

Note: This dataset is updated weekly. Dry Cleaning Facilities are points representing the locations of dry cleaning facilities regulated by NJDEP. The NJDEP New Jersey Environmental Management System (NJEMS) serves as the database that supplies coordinates and descriptive attributes from several tables used to generate this GIS layer. This layer is produced primarily for the NJDEP i-MapNJ ArcIMS interactive mapping web application and ArcGIS (ArcView, ArcInfo) users. Program interests included in NJEMS are: Air, Communications Center, Discharge Prevention, Exams and Licensing, Fish Game and Wildlife, Green Acres, Hazardous Waste, Lab Certification, Land Use, Landscape Irrigation, Parks and Forestry, Pesticides, Pinelands, Planning, Radiation, Right-to-Know, Site Remediation, Soil Conservation, Solid Waste, TCPA, Water Quality, Water Supply, and Watershed Management. The locations derived using GPS represent main entrance or front door locations for the sites. Users should note that not every site in NJEMS presently (as of June 2009) has an established coordinate (GPS or otherwise). NJDEP is continually working to acquire these with GPS, location data submitted to permitting programs, and through address matching techniques.
This CD presents maps derived from a subset of the National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) Hydrogeochemical and Stream Sediment Reconnaissance (HSSR) data. Approxiamately 260,000 samples were analyzed in the continental U.S. and consisted of solid samples, including stream, lake, pond, spring, and playa sediments, and soils. Data for eleven elements were analyzed and included on this release of the National Geochemical Atlas CD: Na, Ti, Fe, Cu, Zn, As, Ce, Hf, Pb, Th, and U. The National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) program of the Department of Energy (DOE) collected a vast amount of chemical data on sediment, soil, and water samples from the United States in the late 1970's and early 1980's. This element of the NURE program was known as the Hydrogeochemical and Stream Sediment Reconnaissance (HSSR). The NURE HSSR data have long been available to the public in a variety of formats, ranging from the original paper reports produced by the DOE (see Averett, 1984), to comprehensive digital releases on CD-ROM by the U.S. Geological Survey in the last few years (Hoffman and Buttleman, 1994; 1996), to digital releases on the Internet of reformatted and cleaned data (Smith, 1998). While these publications remain the best sources of the complete, primary data, and are accompanied by documentation of the sampling protocols, sample characteristics, and analytical methods, they are difficult to use for geochemical research, especially when the study area covers a wide area of the United States. This publication is intended to allow the rapid visualization of the geochemical landscape of the United States using the NURE HSSR data. Here, the user is relieved of the responsibility of selecting and processing the raw data; this was done in the preparation of the CD. A powerful geographic-information system (GIS) tool, the ArcView program of Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI), is provided to allow one to probe and manipulate the processed NURE data. Within the ArcView environment, multiple presentations of the NURE are provided, ranging from color-coded point maps, to bitmap-images on a national scale, to interpreted maps based on geologic and hydrologic units. Because the NURE HSSR data have been processed by the author for the production of this CD, the user must use a degree of caution in interpreting the maps produced here, and in using the data files found on the disc. One must understand the methods used in deriving the data on this CD in order to judge the significance of any particular map or data feature. Fortunately, the raw data used in the production of this CD are available in digital form (Hoffman and Buttleman, 1996), for examination by sophisticated users.

This study was designed to develop crime forecasting as an application area for police in support of tactical deployment of resources. Data on crime offense reports and computer aided dispatch (CAD) drug calls and shots fired calls were collected from the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Bureau of Police for the years 1990 through 2001. Data on crime offense reports were collected from the Rochester, New York Police Department from January 1991 through December 2001. The Rochester CAD drug calls and shots fired calls were collected from January 1993 through May 2001. A total of 1,643,828 records (769,293 crime offense and 874,535 CAD) were collected from Pittsburgh, while 538,893 records (530,050 crime offense and 8,843 CAD) were collected from Rochester. ArcView 3.3 and GDT Dynamap 2000 Street centerline maps were used to address match the data, with some of the Pittsburgh data being cleaned to fix obvious errors and increase address match percentages. A SAS program was used to eliminate duplicate CAD calls based on time and location of the calls. For the 1990 through 1999 Pittsburgh crime offense data, the address match rate was 91 percent. The match rate for the 2000 through 2001 Pittsburgh crime offense data was 72 percent. The Pittsburgh CAD data address match rate for 1990 through 1999 was 85 percent, while for 2000 through 2001 the match rate was 100 percent because the new CAD system supplied incident coordinates. The address match rates for the Rochester crime offenses data was 96 percent, and 95 percent for the CAD data. Spatial overlay in ArcView was used to add geographic area identifiers for each data point: precinct, car beat, car beat plus, and 1990 Census tract. The crimes included for both Pittsburgh and Rochester were aggravated assault, arson, burglary, criminal mischief, misconduct, family violence, gambling, larceny, liquor law violations, motor vehicle theft, murder/manslaughter, prostitution, public drunkenness, rape, robbery, simple assaults, trespassing, vandalism, weapons, CAD drugs, and CAD shots fired.

1:10 Million - The GEODATA TOPO 10M 2002 version of this product has been completely revised, including the source information. The data is derived primarily from GEODATA TOPO 250K Series 1 data. In October 2003, the data was released in double precision coordinates. It provides a fundamental base layer of geographic information on which you can build a wide range of applications and is particularly suited to State-wide and national applications. The data consists of ten layers: built-up areas, contours, drainage, Spot heights, framework, localities, offshore, rail transport, road transport, and waterbodies. 1:1Million - Vector data was produced by generalising Geoscience Australia's GEODATA TOPO 250K Series 1 data and updated using Series 2 data where available in January 2001. Raster data was sourced from USGS and updated using GEODATA 9 Second DEM Series 2, 1:5 million, Vegetation - Present (1988) and National Land and Water Resources data. However, updates have not been subjected to thorough vetting. A more detailed land use classification for Australia is available at www.nlwra.gov.au.

1:10Million - The key source for production of the Builtup Areas, Drainage, Framework, Localities, Rail Transport, Road Transport and Waterbodies layers was the GEODATA TOPO 250K Series 1 product. Some revision of the Builtup Areas, Road Transport, Rail Transport and Waterbodies layers was carried out using the latest available satelite imagery. The primary source for the Spot Heights, Contours and Offshore layers was the GEODATA TOPO 10M Version 1 product. A further element to the production of GEODATA TOPO 10M 2002 has been the datum shift from the Australian Geodetic Datum 1966 (AGD66) to the Geocentric Datum of Australia 1994 (GDA94).
